This sounds like the automatic choke not working.

Either get a mechanic who knows these carburettors to check it or, as I do, just disable it completely.

If you are in the part of the UK that is snowing today you might also look at water on the distributor cap.  If the cap is old, the water will exacerbate any tracking problems.  So either dry it out, spray WD40 or better still, buy a new one.

Hello, i have just bought my first bug a '72 1200 and this morning
after starting fine and warming up for a few minutes i took off 50
meters down the drive in first gear, stopped then when i went to take
off it seemed to flood and engine and wouldn't go forward, when i
started the engine again it took ages to turnover and start then
after 40 secs or so of waiting for the engine to 'clear'' it would
pull away very slow, once in 2nd gaer it's fine but 4th it goes tio
the problem of  cutting out and kind of throbbing, can anyone tell me
what it is? could it be the distributer or does the fuel intake need
changing? if it's sat idle it turns over fine? any comments would be
greatly appreciated... cheers
