It was a dealer fitted option and not connected to the slotted valance – that was for typically for an additional US spec. oil cooler that fitted immediately behind, designed to cope with dry, arid higher temps than we’re used to.

Richard, Kieth, Colin, et all,
I am inclined to agree with Colin's comment regarding A/C not being a factory
fit to Beetles. (I can not find any reference in my Etzold book to A/C)
however it does beg the question where were these units fitted??? and also
I was under the impression that that is what the slotted front Valance is
for on the '03 (It conceals the heat exchanger)

An intresting and intreaguing thread I think
