IMHO - as long as you put in a good quality oil, change it often (5,000 to 12,000 miles) the grade is not a problem, but stick to on etype.
I put sae 30 in my bugs for years, but then started to use 10 - 30 as I had other cars and could not be bothered to keep other oild. i cannot discrene any difference.
I think the only point to consider is that the oil is sufficiently thin when hot so that it flows easily to keep everything cool. This anything with a rating of something like 15 - 50 would be too thick.
