185/55 x 15 and a rear size of 195/60 x 15 on 5.5 wheels to give
a combination of improved cornering and good handling.
Continental of Germany suggest their CH90(H) or CV90(V) tire for the 185/55
and their EcoContact CP in H or V, CH90 or CV90 for the 195/60.

It is more a question of what is "safe" on your rims. I have 185 tyres
fitted to standard 4" wide rims, but the tyre bulge is quite large. I would
suggest that a width of something like 205 would be the maximum width on a 5
1/2" wide wheel. You may still have to persuade your tyre fitters that what
they are doing is ok.
(The issue is how well the tyre seats in the rim - you will have a lot of
sidewall "roll" if you do go for those tyres, you may also find that they
rub on the rear trailing arms when cornering hard)
I would recommend that 185 would be a "safe" bet.

Subject: [1302 eGroup] Tyres for Sprints!
hi,
ive recently bought some original empi/lemmertz sprintstars for my bug
to replace my stock wheels, i have two 4.5" wide and im hoping i can
get my current 165 tyres on there, however, i also have two that are
5.5" wide, my question is, whats tha maximum size tyre i can fit on a
5.5" wheel? Im guessing the rim size is still 15"?
thank you.
