Hey, guys...This car seems to be giving me a great deal of headaches!
I love it nonetheless. Hopefully you can help with some issues I have.
I got the parts car (1971 Super Sedan!) and swapped the hood out with
the damaged one from the wife's '72 Vert. This weekend, we are
attempting to switch out the fenders...We got the front off, and now
we've run into a bit of a snag.
The '72 seems to have gone through a great deal of modification. I
have never seen a Bug with square headlamps and taillamps...though the
fenders housing these items seem to be a perfect fit. The light wiring
did not simply pull off from the lights themselves, and the part I
assume to be the harness is specifically designed for this type of
fender; that is to say, in the front, the main wires are split to come
out of the hood on the top of the quarter panel--this goes to the
headlamp. Then, there is another set of wires, split into two
sections, at the bottom of the quarter panel which lead to the turn
signals. There are two turn signals on each side; one round one bolted
into the front of the fender, and one mounted in the bumper. Now, in
order to get the front fenders off, I had to cut these wires. Will I
need a new wiring harness for the "original style" fender/lamp setup,
or can I simply attach the originals to the existing?
Issue two: The tires on this car are not the stock 165/R15's, which we
would like to put on (of course, the Sedan has these, and they're in
very good shape). We could easily get at the front tires on the '72,
but the rear tires have some sort of odd-looking lug nut on it. The
tires are four-bolt, and the 21mm lug wrench makes easy work of taking
all four off of the front tires, but only three of the rear ones. I
think this "oddity" is a locking nut...but I don't have a wrench to
fit the size of the nut, and I don't have a key! How can I get these
tires off, so I can take the rear fenders off??
Also, any info on these fenders and wheels would be greatly appreciated!
Meanwhile, we're debating the practicality of restoring the Sedan to
his former glory--no easy task, as mice have devoured the wiring under
the hood, and also made short work of the seats and headliner. The
rear window leaked and completely rusted out the metal of (what I
think is called) the rear-luggage compartment, and the battery blew
up, causing the floor pan to dissolve. And, the starter appears to be
shot, so I don't know if the engine will run, except that I can, in
fact, turn the pulleys by hand. Lots of welding to be done, for sure,
and that cost can add up!! Not to mention the replacement metal is a
couple hundred bucks...I need a cheaper hobby!
Thanks for the assist...
