Hi Ali,

Are you sure it’s a 1979 1302?? They stopped making the 1302 in 1972 – It as a 2 year only model.

Do you have a curved windscreen??

I am not sure of the dash metal hole size but the lighter is about 1 1/2 inches
wide and the inside is about 1 1/4 I believe it tapers down as it goes into the
dash. Let me find my daughters camera and I will send you some detailed
pictures

I have a question. On your dashboard you have a cigarette lighter at the bottom
closest to the driver. Do you know what diameter the holes is in the metal? The
original padded dash on mine was so broken up I had to obtain another, which was
second hand. The second hand dash has a hole for the lighter but the hole in the
metal behind is about 1.2cm, say 0.5 inch.
I bought my car in Germany, I live in England, and so the disposition of the
holes is the same as yours.

Oscar,
I assume you are talking about the chrome molding around the window??  if you are, the rubber weather seals have to be the right ones so the chrome can be inserted into their groove.  Try wolfberg west on their web site   The A/C is too expensive to find in good shape and install for me so I just roll down and open everything and drive fast....LOL

You're welcome Steve. I just hope I could find the moldings here in Manila. I would like

installing an aircon in your car, so you don't swelter it out during summer? I suppose the
weather here in the Philippines is worse and mind you, it's very humid too. My next project
is to install an aircon.for my 1302 so I can really enjoy driving it around town specially my wife
who would'nt ride in it until I had it airconditioned.

You're welcome Steve. I just hope I could find the moldings here in Manila. I would like
to install them in my car. It really looks nice. I'm just wondering, don't you have plans of
installing an aircon in your car, so you don't swelter it out during summer? I suppose the
weather here in the Philippines is worse and mind you, it's very humid too. My next project
is to install an aircon.for my 1302 so I can really enjoy driving it around town specially my wife
who would'nt ride in it until I had it airconditioned.

Hi Oscar,  thanks for the kind words!   All of the the cars weather strips and moldings are original the pop out quarter windows are not, I put those in for better air flow because of the hot Sacramento, California summers.

Hi Joseph, kumusta - I know what you mean about the enjoyment of driving the '02 very well. Right now I dont have one but very soon I hope I will again (we relocated to Florida two years ago from Europe). My last owned car seen at top of page here -

I see no reason why your engine will have problems as air-con was fitted by the local VW Dealers as required and as far as I know with no special adjustments. Your gas mileage will suffer though...

Yeah, roads here are terrible, except in the highways where its smooth.  But my 1302 is holding up quite well, its even more comfortable compared with my other cars with leaf-spring rear suspension.  Although I have four other cars ( all with power amenities), its so tempting to use my 1302 everyday, the ride and the memories that go with it, are just incomparable.

By the way, my 1302 is now equipped with aircon as its very hot here in the Philippines (compressor is the same with suzuki small cars).  Do you foresee any problems with it, considering that the engine is not originally designed for airconditioning.

Thanks...

Colin normally comes up with the good answers, but thanks anyhow.
If your socks (front struts or rear tubes) are leaking I recommend you get new ones.  Normal production shocks are almost impossible to repair as the way they are manufactured does not allow them to be taken part and re-assembled.
The rear shocks are very easy to replace – just jack up the car and take the wheels off.  I think it is a 19 or 17mm ring spanner is all that you need.  You can do the two whilst your wife makes coffee (ahem, non-PC remark warning!!)
The front struts need a spring compressor and so unless you have one I recommend you take it to a garage – it does not need to be a specialist VW garage as the front suspension is very similar to modern cars.  In all cases I suggest that you apply some penetrating fluid to help get off those rusty and tight nuts.  If you do not have special penetrating fluid paraffin (kerosene) with a drop of oil will do.
Good Luck

To mike,
I just had my front wheels balanced, the shop placed quite a number of lead weights just to get the wheels balanced.  We had to choose the best 2 wheels out of the 4 wheels (my rims are original 1972 empi mags but already repainted due to cracking chrome) since the other rims are already deformed.  Guess what, the rattles and shimmies are gone when I tried going 50kmh to 100 kmh.
My front shocks already show some fluid coming out.  Does it mean that I should replace them with new ones? Or can it be repaired? I dont feel any difference with the suspension when im driving.
Thanks mike, you are becoming the 1302 authority in problem-solving.

I suggest that you make certain the wheels are perfectly balanced before you do anything major as Colin suggests.  I rebuilt my front suspension and everything was new and tight – it still vibrated at 80kph, I had my wheels balance a second time and it went away completely.
Make certain the wheels are balanced circumferentially as well across the width.

I have a red 1302 1600 cc german engine, bought here in the Philippines by my father (brand-new) way back in 1972.  The constant problem since time immemorial is the steering.  When the speed hits 50 kph, it starts to vibrate so hard, but disappears once it hits 60 kmh.  We've tried to tinker with and replace the bushings, tire rod ends, etc., steering damper, but to no avail.  I heard this is the most common and nagging problem with Mcpherson strut-equipped VWs.
But I dont believe the Germans dont have the cure for this very basic problem.  Do you have suggestions on how to solve this irritating problem?

Thanks again Mike. Exactly as you said, the problem with the clutch is gone. Brown is the ground, license plate light socket is ok now.

Thanks, Mike. I will check it. The original cable remains on the decklid. Will look by an avometer for the polarity. One of them is chasis ground, the other is +12V I guess.

I would drive it for a day or two to see if it goes away – it could be dust burning off – but if it remains I would check cable adjustment and the curve of the final 30cm of clutch cable outer casing.  Check in the manual bout how much the cable should curve – as this does affect how the clutch closes

Rear license plate?  On the engine deck lid?  Any cable will do as the bulb takes very little current.  I would just take one from a scrapped car.

Hi. Last week, I've got the clutch disc replaced with a new Sachs on my 71' super. Then the rear CV joints are lubricated as a 50000km maintainence for the first time :) (original 57500km). The car did not move for days. Today I discovered that it makes a burn flavour when I hit the clutch pedal. It disappears on the road, reappears while parking. Is it normal due to the material that is used on the new clutch disc?

Also, does anyone know which cable is +12V for the license plate light? Thanks for reading.
