In his youth, finnish modern architect Alvar Aalto
(1898-1976) was immersed in the practical culture of
the forest. His father was a district surveyor, his
grandfather was a chief forester.
In his reminiscences about this Alto recounted:
'the experience of the landscape as a functioning
equilibrium...taught me how man ought to deal with his
habitat...I learned in my youth that one has to
exercise tact when approaching nature, that life has
to be cultivated carefully - but using technology'...
