Hi,

There was a discussion at my model railway club last night about
signals and how to reproduce the 'bounce'. Co-incidentally in the
current issue of MRJ there is a letter on this topic from Allan
Sibley.

Question:- Is there a simple way in which I can extract all the
messages on this topic from the group and produce a document for my
club.

The only way I can think of at the moment is to download each message
and then do a cut and paste. I am looking for a quicker method.

Best wishes

Frank Metcalf

If I remember correctly the buffers you require are the square (actually
rectangular)shank variety with either round or oval heads.

I can supply lost wax brass castings of either style head with matching bodies.

These are not suitable for internal springing but there are a number of methods
whereby a sprung effect can be achieved behind the headstock.

I should add that the bodies are cast with the rectangular hole all the way
through and that with a little judicious application of a file to the
rectangular shank behind the head a sliding fit can be achieved quite easily.

A set of 4 buffers (heads plus bodies) of either kind costs 8.50 GBP post free
in UK.

Hi Martin

Apologies to everyone for keeping an "off topic" thread going too long, but when
you say my mail service provider has been soft bouncing emails from YahooGroups,
why does my email bounce history log only 17 soft bounces in the problem period
(mid to late october - and none before that since June) yet nearly 200 emails
from different Groups were affected? Just trying to get my head around that
one...

Incidentally, this morning everything came up to speed - the last few days mails
(40+)in one big lump. Hurrah - I think!

Your mail service provider has been soft bouncing emails
from YahooGroups. YahooGroups is very unforgiving about
this, and unlike most mail systems, sometimes waits several
days before re-trying. Most people then blame YahooGroups,
whereas the real culprit is your own ISP. It is just that
YahooGroups is very intolerant of their failings, so it appears
that YahooGroups messages are the only ones affected.

What is slightly hilarious in this case is that your mail service
provider is Yahoo themselves! Here is the latest reason
given for a groups email to you being delayed:

"Mail server for "yahoo.co.uk" unreachable for too long"

You can see your own bounce history by going to

   http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs

Martin.

If you mean there has been 200 mailings that you can see on the groups
website but have not received in your mailbox then it means that the
MTA at yahoo.co.uk has received them, but has not passed them on to
your POP3 account. It could mean they have been lost or it could mean
that they are being stored ready for onward transmission once problems
with the network have been sorted.

Once YahooGroups have decided that your address is
bouncing, they stop sending emails. They then try again
after a few days, and restore emails if successful.

When this happens, there will be a note for you on the
MyGroups web page. You can then follow the procedure
to manually restore your emails immediately.

If your account is "hard" bouncing (i.e. positively rejected
by your ISP), only a manual reset is available.

Having said that, I'm not convinced that the bounce history
which Yahoo shows is always an entirely accurate log of
events. More about bouncing in YahooGroups at:

Bouncing emails and now bouncing signals! :-)

I think this thread started at groups message 5327. If you use
a URL like this you can get the text of the following 100 group
emails all on a single page (they may take a few seconds to
download):

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/7_mm_modelling/messages/5327?viscount=100&expan\
d=1

You can then do Select All on the web page and copy and
paste the entire text into your word processor or wherever.

It's then fairly easy to delete out all the Yahoo rubbish and
other topics to leave only the message texts which you want.

If 100 emails isn't enough, simply click the Next link to get
the next 100 and repeat the process.

If 100 at once is too many to handle, change the viscount=
(i.e. "visibility count") to a lower figure. (100 is the maximum.)

For threads on other topics, change the 5327 to the appropriate
starting number. You can try adding &threaded=1 to the URL,
but the thread indexing can be confusing and can miss some
relevant details mentioned under other threads. I have found
the normal date order to be the easiest to edit.

Martin.

Hi all
I happened to notice a a small advert in the latest MRJ from Portsdown
models who produce jigs for crossings and planing jigs for 4mm pointwork. At
the bottom of the advert, in very small writing, was a line saying
'Interested in jigs for 7mm, please let me know'.
If this sounds your sort of thing, you might like to do that by email to
dave@....

I have no connection to them whatsoever, just thought someone else might
find it useful and if you don't take MRJ, or scour the ads closely, you
wouldn't have known about it.

A good friend back home in the UK did a batch of three. He told me a
couple of years ago that some of the smaller etched parts were
duplicated instead of being mirror images of each other, I seem to
remember him mentioning the rods to open the sandboxes.

Of course, it's not unique to Zero Zephyr. A lot of kits make similar
mistakes.

I remember these because he made them with bells as used at Weymouth
Quay. He needed me to send him some HO lost wax castings (from the
USA) that were the right size because he couldn't find anything
suitable in the UK. I seem to remember they were from Precision Scale.

I was waiting for Eric to do the earlier saddle tanks - I wanted to
backdate one to the ex-Cornwall Mineral Railway condition, but he
never got around to doing that one before he sold the range to Adrian.

There was kit of one type available from Nationalised Railways. I built one

Hi all

If any group bidding is being don/considered remember that these are stud
contact three rail items and you need to factor in the cost of conversion unless
you use the same system.

I was in the MRC when Tug was proposing the new 7mm layout which was suggested
to be stud contact to accommodate his stock. I went on record to the committee
to challenge this at the time as a regressive step as all new 7mm types were 2
rail 32mm. The result was Happisburgh. I do feel that the Ebay offer should
state that they are "non preferred" as to current collection.

Hi Martin,
How are things?. Have'nt seen your name on here
for ages. Lot of work to change from stud to 2 rail.
Involves fitting new wheels anyway. I know of only
one modeller still using coarse scale 2 rail. He
has a brilliant outdoor railway and has just made an
A4 and a rake of teak stock to go on it. Superb.
If you get the chance, can you ask Barrie Walls
where he put the motor on his B17?. I am assuming
he has got one!. Very difficult to put the drive on the
rear wheels without it intruding a bit into the cab.
I did wonder about putting the motor in the firebox
with a Stubbs gearbox on the leading axle driven
via a shaft. I know he has done that on occasion.
All the best

I agree with you about the lack of reference to current collection method in
the eBay description, at least from the first time round. I haven't been able
to find this new composite offering, can you point me to it please?

However, there are many modellers, albeit a minority, still pursuing coarse
scale standards, and including a significant number below retirement age in the
UK. I know this is factual through my experience with the Exley businesses,
and still through the evergrowing Bassett-Lowke Society. We must be very
careful not to alienate this group of people with interests other than Finescale
or
ScaleSeven from this and other groups. Personally I support and follow the
work of all 3 'scales.'

Why not ask Brian Clapperton at ABC. He has all sorts of configurations of
gearboxes and may well be able to help.

Hi Graham

Barrie has got 3 B17's and he made me a chassis for another. The motor is a
JH type with gearbox driving on the rear axle with the motor facing forward.

This leaves cab clear and the boiler without a cut out

Of course it runs superbly.

He is now up to 85 locomotives and he told me last week that he only
reckons to build another 12 or so!. These will be 2 Fowler 2-6-4 tanks, a
Peppercorn A2 (already started) a N1 tank with condensing gear, an N2 tank
with GNR style condensing gear, an 8F, a F3 2-4-2, 2 GCR Atlantics, a GCR
Immingham, the others still to be decided. He is unable to house all the
locos on the layout so there is a "museum store" where those not in use
rest!

Regards

Martin
