Hello,
Our Capybara exhibit is inside our rainforest exhibit. The substrate is dirt. I plant only trees such as ficus that I then surround with a lot of 1"-2" sized branches that are about 3' tall and then I wire them on so that the capy's can't get at the tree trunks easily. This method has worked very well for the past 10 years. This works with our pygmy hippos, and tapirs. The warthog trees require boulders as well to keep them from digging up the roots.
Good Luck,

Subject: [AZH] Capyra baraDoes anyone have any experience with a natural substrate on a Caryra bara exhibit haul out area that will drain well and sustain plant life. On the same vein – has anyone had any luck at all growing plants (with no protection) with these little chain saws on legs? - Steve
