Hi Renee
There is a botanical reference called "The Plant Book" by David Mabberly. It contains condensed information on plant families and genera. Within the summary of each family or genus is a short list of alkaloids and other chemicals that characterize them. It also lists economic uses of specific plants in a group, which can also provide some insight. I have found this to be somewhat, if not completely, helpful in determining a plant's potential for toxicity.
