David,
Here at the North Carolina Zoo we have a 2 acre compost site where we compost all of our zoo's animal waste except felines and primates. Using the windrow method we process over 1,500 tons of animal waste and 400 tons of plant cuttings per year. This is accomplished with a front end loader and wood chipper. Finished compost is tested for Pathogens (Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, Campylobacter and coliform) and Heavy metals (cadmium, lead, nickel, zinc and copper).
Let me know if you desire more information.

At Woodland Park Zoo we have been composting our animal waste for more
than 25 years. We are always looking to improve our process and product
so we would like to know of other institutions that compost their
animal waste. Specifically we would like to know if you test for
contaminants and, if so, what do you test for? Any information will be
greatly appreciated.
