Ohtsuka 'Specicial', celebrating his Birthday last month..
OHTSUKA HIRONORI MEIJIN
Ohtsuka-Hironori 10th Dan Meijin (AD1892-1982) The founder of Wado-
ryu Karate. Hironori-Ohtsuka was born in Shimodate City, Ibiragi,
Japan on the 1st June 1892. He was the first son of Tokujiro-
Ohtsuka, who was a doctor of medicine. 1892 was also the year that
the Dai-Nippon-Butoku-Kai was established. He started training under
Chojiro-Ebashi, an uncle of his mother, in April 1897 at the age of
four, a style of training he would continue with, even at Waseda
University in Tokyo. In 1905 Ohtsuka-Hironori entered the Shimozuma
middle school, where he started Shindo-Yoshin-ryu Ju-jutsu under
Tatsusaburo-Nakayama. In 1910 Ohtsuka-Hironori entered Waseda
University to learn commerce. In 1917 he started work at the
Kawasaki bank, at this stage he was learning numerous styles of Ju-
jutsu. Ohtsuka-Hironori met, and became good friends, with the
founder of Aikido, Morihei-Ueshiba. In May 1919 he became master
of 'bone-setting technique'. On the 1st of July 1921 he received his
Shindo-Yoshin-ryu Ju-jutsu licence from Tatsusaburo-Nakayama, and so
became the Highest Authority. He started his Karate training with
the famous Gichin-Funikoshi in July 1922, a style known as Karate-
jutsu. Ohtsuka-Hironori met Funikoshi Sensei during a martial-arts
demonstration at the Sports Festival organised by the Japanese
Educational Department. Funikoshi Sensei agreed to teach Ohtsuka-
Hironori all he knew about Okinawan Karate-jutsu, the lessons
started that same day. Within one year Ohtsuka-Hironori had studied
all the Kata within the system. Even after this time Ohtsuka-
Hironori could see the 'shortfall' in the Kata-only system. It was
explained to him that all of the concepts of 'Budo' was within Kata,
and that was the only aspect to train. In 1924 Ohtsuka-Hironori
introduced Yakusoku-gumite to the system, this concept of 'partner-
work' revolutionised Karate-jutsu. He also developed Idori-no-kata,
Tachiai-no-kata, and Shirahatori-no-kata. In 1928 he was 'Shindo-
Yoshin-ryu Shihan', the Chief Instructor of his Shindo-Yoshin-ryu,
he also set up a 'bone-setting' practice at this time. In 1929 he
registered with the 'Nippon-Kobudo-Shinko-Kai', the Japanese Martial-
arts Federation. In 1934 Ohtsuka-Hironori was recognised as an
independent style, and started teaching full-time. Due to his
dedication to Karate he had to close his 'bone-setting' business. In
1938 Ohtsuka-Hironori registered his new style as Shin-Shu-Wado-ryu.
In 1939 all Karate styles were asked to register their systems with
the 'Dai-Nippon-Butoku-Kai', Ohtsuka-Hironori named his style Wado-
ryu. Other styles that registered were Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, and
Shoto-ryu (Shotokan-ryu). In 1940 on May the 5th the 'All Styles
Karate Demonstrations' took place at Butoku-Den in Kyoto. All the
major styles took part, these included Goju-ryu, Keishi-Kempo,
Nippon-Kempo-ryu, Shito-ryu, Shoto-ryu, and Wado-ryu. In 1944
Ohtsuka-Hironori was promoted to Chief Instructor of all Karate
under the Dai-Nippon-Butoku-kai. In 1945 the Americans, at the end
of the Second World War, disbanded all martial-arts. In 1951 all
martial-arts were reinstated, after the signing of the American
peace treaty with Japan. In 1955 the first Karate tournament took
place, organised by Ohtsuka-Hironori, it was called the 'First All
Japan Wado-ryu Karate Championships'. In 1964 'The All Japan Karate-
do Federation' (JKF) was established. This same year Suzuki-Tatsuo,
Arakawa-Toru, and Takashima-Hajime introduced Wado-ryu to Great
Britain, Europe, and the United States of America. In 1966 Ohtsuka-
Hironori was awarded 'Kun-Goto-Soukuo-Kyo-Kuju-jutsu-Sho' (similar
to the OBE in Great Britain) from Emperor Hirohito for his
dedication to Karate. In 1972 he was awarded the title of Meijin
from Higashino-Kunino-Miya (a member of the Japanese royal family)
President of the International Martial-arts Federation the 'Kokusai-
Budo-Renmei'. Ohtsuka-Hironori was the first man in history to
receive this the highest honour in martial-arts. For his services to
Japanese martial-arts, and to honour his new position as the highest
Karate Authority in Japan, he was awarded the Shiju-Hoosho medal
from the Japanese Government, the only man in the history of Karate
to be so honoured. Below is an adaptation from an open letter
written by Ohtsuka Hironori (10th Dan) Meijin to all Wado-Ryu
students, sent out two-years prior to his death, explaining the
origins of Wado-ryu.
"At the age of five years old, I was in very poor health. It was
then that I began my training in Ju-jutsu at the school of my uncle,
Sensei Chojiro-Ehashi, the official martial arts instructor of the
Tsuchiura Clan. Since this time I have trained continuously until my
present age of eighty-eight years. For this, I can heartily thank
the traditional Samurai education, which was both gentle and strict.
I also thank and pray for my dear mother without whom I could never
have succeeded in my deepest aims; I thank her sincerely for always
being near.
On my thirtieth birthday, Master Nakayama, the third Grandmaster of
Shinto Yoshin-ryu Ju-jutsu, allowed me to learn the deepest and most
secret doctrines of our school. It was then that I succeeded him as
the fourth Grandmaster.
Karate was becoming increasingly popular around this time, and I
began to study its techniques from several eminent Okinawan masters
who had begun to teach in Tokyo. It occurred to me that there were
many fine attributes in the Okinawan systems, and so decided to
blend these with the finest elements of Shinto Yoshin-ryu Ju-jutsu
to create a genuine and original Japanese martial-art. Through this
process I developed Kumite, Gyaku-nage, I-dori, Tachi-iai, Tanken-
dori, and Shinken-Shirai-dori.
Every year, for purposes of promoting the Japanese martial-arts, the
Butokuden in Kyoto held a national festival. In 1938, the festival
focused on the originators of each martial-art, however, no
originator of Japanese Karate had been identified. I named the
originator of the first true Japanese style of Karate-Do as Shiro-
Yoshitoki-Akiyama (the founder of Shinto Yoshin-ryu Jujitsu) and
named this new style of Karate-Do, 'Wado-Ryu' meaning: 'Japanese-way
school' or also 'Peaceful-way school' since the Kanji lettering
for 'Wa' can mean both.
The fundamental meaning and original aims of martial-arts is the
promotion of Peace. To bring peace to society and to guard against
its loss so that human beings can enjoy a happy life. We must strive
for peace in a world where it is increasingly difficult to achieve.
We must not simply rely on God's mercy to achieve it but must strive
as individuals, with all our will, to attain it. Immense spiritual
and physical power is required so we will not surrender to the
difficulties and barriers which lie before us on this journey The
hard training in martial-arts aims to foster this dauntless,
indefatigable strength which is why the beauty of martial-arts
training is beyond the vicissitudes of mundane affairs."
On the 29th of January 1982 Ohtsuka-Hironori Meijin died at the age
89, he had practised martial-arts for 85 years.
"Buno-michi-wa Tada-aragoto-na-to-omohiso Wa-no-michi-kiwa-me Wa-o-
motomu-michi: The way to practise martial-arts is not for fighting.
Always look for your own inner peace and harmony, search for it."
Ohtsuka-Hironori.
Dear AIWa Instructor,
As you may be aware the Alliance of International Wado-ryu is no
longer organising Annual Awards from the Honbu due to the geography
and size of AIWa.
It has become very difficult for the President to recognise
individuals from each club that achieves well over a period of time.
However, it has been decided that as many clubs have a 'Student of
the Month' award, at the end of the year the student who posses the
most 'mentions' as 'Student of the Month' will be awarded the 'AIWa
Student of the Year'.
If your club does not operate a Student of the Month scheme, and you
would like to take part and allow your student/s to get the
recognition they deserve, please forward your proposals each month
to the AIWa President.
Each club will have there relevant Student mentioned in the AIWa-
News and the names will be placed on a 'score board' at the AIWa-
Honbu.
Student of the Month can be for recognition in any aspect at the
Dojo level. From best attendance, helping the Sensei, organising
discipline, helping others, to best spirit (anything can be
considered for this club level monthly recognition).
There will be two categories for the end of the year awards: Senior
Student of the Year and Junior Student of the Year.
All candidates will be considered from May to November for 2006 and
December to November from 2007 onwards. So start those names rolling
in. Remember, only two names from each club per month (Junior &
Senior). So if you have any, please send in your May nominations NOW!

Burns and Scalds
Description.
Burns are injuries to body tissues caused by heat, chemicals or
radiation. Scalds are caused by wet heat, such as steam or hot
liquids. Burns are classified according to the area and depth of
injury. Superficial burns involve only the outer layers of skin
cause redness, swelling, tenderness and usually heal well.
Intermediate burns which involve some layers of the skin form
blisters, can become infected, and need medical attention. Deep
burns involve all layers of the skin, which may be pale and charred,
may be pain free if nerves are damaged, and will always require
medical attention.
Symptoms.
Redness, swelling, tenderness, blisters, skin may be pale and
charred, may be pain free if nerves are damaged and symptoms and
signs of shock.
Cool the burned area with water for 10 to 15 minutes or apply a
medical burns product such as Water-gel or Burn-gel. Lay the
casualty down and make them as comfortable as possible, protecting
the burned area from contact with the ground. Cover your mouth when
dealing with burns, as the risk of cross-infection is high. Remove
any rings, watches, belts or constricting clothing from the burned
area and it's surroundings before it begins to swell. Cover the
injured area loosely with sterile unmediated dressing or similar non-
fluffy material and bandage.
Don't:
Remove anything that is sticking to the burn.
Apply lotions, ointments, butter or fat to the injury.
Break blisters or otherwise interfere with the injured area.
Over-cool the patient and cause shivering.
Chemical Burns
Cool the area with slowly running water for at least ten minutes.
Gently remove contaminated clothing while flooding injured area,
taking care not to contaminate yourself.
Continue treating as for a severe burn.
Call 999/112/911 for an ambulance, or remove to hospital.
Sunburn
Remove the casualty to the shade and cool skin by sponging gently
with cold water.
If the burns are mild, gently apply an after sun cream.
For severe blistering, seek medical aid.
Notes:
If breathing and heartbeat stop, begin resuscitation immediately, If
casualty is unconscious but breathing normally, place in the
recovery position. Treat for shock. Send for medical attention.
Deep or full-depth burns involve all layers of the skin, which may
be charred, pale, and in some areas, an ashen colour.

OHYO-GUMITE
Demonstrated by Suzuki Tatsuo (8th Dan) Hanshi
'Semi-free sparring'. The prearranged fighting sequences practised
in Wado-ryu Karate. For example, the Ohyo-gumite as practised by the
Domei Kokusai Wadokai: Ohyo-gumite Napponme.
(A = Attack, D = Defence - R = Right stance, L = Left stance)
Prior to the attack/defence the tactic of nijiri-ashi (creeping-
foot) is performed by both the attacker and defender. The
attacker 'creeps' forward (mae-nijiri-ashi/ma-o-nusumu) to take
advantage, and the defender 'creeps' back (ushiro-nijiri-ashi) to
retain the Ma-ai. Ohyo-gumite: Napponme; Napponme; A - R: One step
foot sweep, foot sweep, back kick to the body and step inside D's
left leg with right leg and use Kuzushi tactic and right outer
block, while performing left reverse punch to the body. D - L: Step
back into right fighting stance, step back into left fighting stance.

Amino Acids
A CLUE to the mystery of how nature selected left-handed amino acids
rather right-handed ones may lie in the way the substances behave as
they dissolve in water. Amino acids can appear in left-handed (L)
and right-handed (D) mirror-image forms. When made from scratch in
the lab the two versions are equally likely to appear, but in
nature, L amino acids dominate. Donna Blackmond at Imperial College
London and colleagues dissolved a mixture of solid L and D versions
of the amino acid serine in water. They found that a small
difference in the initial proportion of one version gets amplified
in the resulting solution. So a 100:1 mixture of L- and D-serine
produces a solution made up almost entirely of L-serine, but so does
a 100:99 mixture (Nature, vol 441, p 621). "It doesn't matter what
proportions of solid amino acids you throw in, you always get
exactly the same proportions in solution," says Blackmond, whose
team has found a similar effect with other amino acids. She says she
is surprised that no one noticed the effect before. This effect
could have amplified a slight excess of L-amino acids in nature. Why
there was a slight excess to start with is another question. Taken
from issue 2554 of New Scientist magazine, 02 June 2006, page 18.

02/07/06 Wadokai England European Championships Event & Organisation
Course. Following on from the recent England Wado Kai meeting to
plan for the European Championships I will be holding a course on
Sunday 2nd July 2006 at Valley Park School, Cromer Gardens, Farndale
Avenue, Wolverhampton. WV6. The purpose of the course is not solely
to look at the judging and refereeing side of things but also to
ensure that all our coaches are up to speed with the rules for
seniors, cadets and children. In addition the course will be
designed to look at the whole subject of organising competition and
recruiting personnel to help run what will probably the most
important and ambitious event that Wadokai England have ever taken
on. The course will commence at 10am prompt and will be finished by
4pm and will cover all aspects of running a competition from
compiling entries and completing a draw through to time-keeping,
scoring and judging even control of the weigh in procedure. It is
imperative that we get as many Wadokai England personnel to attend
as possible however I am mindful that people do have very busy
calendars. The cost of the course is £10.00 per person payable on
the day but it would be useful from my point of view to know who
will be coming along and if they can register for the course by e-
mailing me this would be a great help. We will also need to call
upon club instructors and Wadokai England coaches to send as many
competent fighters along as possible to the course so that we can do
some practical training for time keepers, scorers, judges and
referees. Anyone coming along to fight and assist in the practical
training will not be expected to pay for the course. I hope that
this is enough detail and that you will be able to circulate the
information for me. If anyone needs any additional information
please do not hesitate to contact me, Vince Parker 5th Dan, on Email

23/07/06 Japanese Sword Seminar. Sensei Peter Brown. Is the guest
instructor the UK's most 'traditional' ninjutsu (yep.. ninja)
instructor, he has personally trained under the worlds last two
remaining Japanese grandmaster's for around 10 years back in the
late 70's to the late 80's in Japan, before disappearing (as ninja's
do!!) to teach the SAS hand to hand combat and also remains one the
UK's foremost shadowy bodyguard figures that protect our
celebrities. Whenever you watch those Sky TV martial arts
documentaries on Japanese warriors you will always see his two
masters, Grandmaster Hatsumi & Grandmaster Tanemura wielding swords
and pole arms. Sensei Peter Brown then brought Ninjutsu (and
everything in the late 80's was ninja - from motorbikes to
sunglasses) to Europe and Peter Brown was behind it all. Certificate
will be supplied to every person attending this seminar. Each

01/08/06 Lammas Day. Traditionally called Lammas from the Saxon word
Half-mass, the Feast of Bread, this festival is also known as
Lughnasadh, Lughnasa (pronounced "Loo-nahs-ah"), or First Fruits,
and is the feast of the god Lugh. Celebrated on August 1, it
coincides with the beginning of the harvest and signifies the death
of Bel, or the Corn King. The Corn King dies, to be later reborn, so
that the tribe may go into the winter months with sustenance plenty.
Another myth tells of the greedy Fomorian Earth-spirits that must be
persuaded to relinquish the fruits of the soil to humans.
In the Scottish Highlands, this feast was sometimes referred to as
the Nasad, or Games, of Lugh, son of Ethle. An early Irish tradition
has it that Lugh established the festival in honour of his foster-
mother Tailtiu, a close relationship in the Celtic custom. In
Ireland, Lugh also is referred to as Lugh of the Long Hand, son of
the Sun.
Rituals: Farmers cut down the first stalks of corn with sickles and
called these stalks John Barleycorn. This first grain is used to
produce the first beer of the season, for consumption at the
Autumnal Equinox six weeks later.
In the British Isles, the Horned One was thought to be the consort
of the Earth Goddess. Harvest festivals usually included a Stag
Dance in which men wore antlers on their heads.

11, 12 & 13/08/06 2006 Wado Conference, Park City, Utah, USA. We
realize that the distance is great but in the spirit of mutual
support, we would like to invite you and any of your members to the
first Wado Conference in North America. We specifically named this a
conference instead of "Summer Camp". We are not hosting a summer
camp, we are hosting a Wado Conference, where people of all
organizations can come together to train, discuss Karate, tell
stories and build friendships. Additionally we have Shihan Toshio
Osaka as our featured instructor this year. Shihan Toshio Osaka, 8th
Dan is one the pre-eminent karate instructors in the Western world.
He has developed a unique and revolutionary approach for
transmitting a method to develop the heart of a warrior. With a
mastery born of more than forty years of teaching, Shihan Osaka has
enabled thousands of students to see the essence of karate-do. He
began his training before college in Nihon Jujijitsu Kenpo. During
his days at Nihon University, (Nichidai) the national university of
Japan, he studied Wado, under the top Wado masters in the world. In
1963, Toshio Osaka won the prestigious East, West collegiate All-
star championships. The following year as Team Captain of the Nihon
University Karate team, they were undefeated. After college Shihan
Osaka began his full contact kickboxing career, using his winnings
to come to the USA. Since coming to the United States Shihan Osaka
has trained many individual and team champions, which have performed
on the world stage. Over the years Shihan Osaka has assisted his
college Nichidai in their efforts to grow and develop karate
students. He is primarily just interested in training and inviting
anyone regardless of group to train with him if they have an
interest. Our sessions under the guest instructors are a little
different the sessions will not be to train the student in a
specific curriculum; rather the class will be to stimulate interest
in a variety of areas of Wado training. ACCOMMODATIONS: Best Western

21/09/06 MABON. The last Sabbat of the year, Mabon, is named for the
Welsh God who is called the 'great son.' This festival is celebrated
at the autumn equinox and marks the second of the three harvests.
Apple and berry harvesting, cemetery visitations, and wine making
are a central feature of this observance. In Welsh mythology, Mabon
was stolen from his mother when he was three days old and taken to
live in the dark underworld until rescued in the spring. This myth
underscores the fact that after this night of balance, darkness
emerges triumphant over the light, and will remain so until Ostara.

21/12/06 WINTER SOLSTICE. Also referred to as Yule, Jul, Saturnalia,
or even Christmas. This feast takes place on or about December 21
and marks the longest, darkest night of the year. This is a festival
of peace and a celebration of waxing solar light. Many honour the
new Sun child by burning an oaken Yule log, and honour the Goddess
in her many Mother aspects. The Father God also can be honoured as
Santa Claus in his Old Sky God, Father Time, and Holly King forms.
Winter symbolises the time in the womb a deep rejuvenate sleep,
rather than nature's death. 31st October – Samhain. SAMHAIN
(pronounced 'Souw-wee,' or in Scots-Gaelic, 'Sha- vin') After the
last apples are picked the year begins again with its dark winter
half when the Earth rests and fertility is renewed. Also called
Samhiunn or Hallowe'en, this festival is sometimes called Trinoux
Samonia or 'Three Nights of the End of Summer.' Originally a Druidic
festival, it is celebrated on the eve of November 1 (October 31).
Technically, either date is appropriate as the Celts measured the
day from sunset to sunset. In the Celtic tale 'The Wasting Sickness
of Cuchulainn,' it is celebrated for a total of seven days.
25/12/06 YULE. Yule is from old Germanic, 'Jul', meaning 'to turn,'
and referred to the phenomenon of the sun 'turning' in the sky three
days after the winter solstice. To the ancients, seeing the sun seem
to sink lower in the sky each day through the long autumn months
must have been a frightening experience! What if the sun simply
disappeared beneath the horizon? What if the winter continued
indefinitely? It would mean the end of life for all creatures. At
the winter solstice, the sun seems to 'stand still' in the sky for a
couple of days. The word solstice literally means 'sun standing'.
31/12/06 HOGMANAY. Hogmanay is the Scottish New Year, celebrated on
31st December every year. Where did the word Hogmanay come from?
Various suggestions have been: Gaelic oge maidne ('new morning').
Flemish combo of hoog ('high' or 'great'), min ('love'
or 'affection') and dag ('day'). Anglo-Saxon Haleg Monath ('Holy
Month'). Norman French word hoguinané ('gift at New Year').
