It was with much regret that I heard of Tony passing away. He was
without doubt the "Father" figure of our pastime. Tony's hulls set the
standard in size (1/24th), layout and the performance. Later his 30
inch models set a second standard size for smaller models. Everything
about our model barges today seems to have stemmed from Tony.
After buying one of his barges I sailed it at an AMBO race meeting at
Herne Bay. Amongst the contenders was Tony. I seemed to be doing
remarkably well for my first time out. My attention wandered as I
watched a model veer off course after making the second buoy on the
first leg of the bowsprit class. The model caught in weed (which was a
problem at the time). Nobody seemed to be making a fuss about this
wayward model so I concentrated on keeping the good lead I had built
up. When it finally dawned on Tony that the barge in the lead was the
one he sold to me and the one in the weeds was the one he should have
been keeping an eye on the air turned blue!! A lesson learned. He took
it well with much muttering from him and a good barracking from his
fellow competitors! It was (if I remember correctly) the first time out
for his model "Arctic". He'd covered the keel with a carrier bag
causing a stir a la America's Cup!
I for one will miss his unique dry humour at the pondside.

Hello Dave, Thanks for your reply. First of all, who makes the SO4 servo and how is it set up inside the hull.? I presume that there must be a cord attached that has to come up through the deck somewhere. How does it move the sail, as the sprit of the mainsail is attached to vangs, what part do they play in the movement of the sail. ? Do the vangs not prevent the sail from moving? I only have a two channel radio. Is this enough, as I had intended to use one servo to operate the rudder? Any further info would be welcome. Cheers. Ray

Hi Ray
I use a S04 Sail arm in all my barges they work well as they allow the sails to be released alot quicker.
As for installation I use the S04 for the main sail & a std servo for the staysail.
Hope this is of some help if not come back to me and I will try and help you out further.

Regards
Dave Watts

Hi, Does anyone in the group use a sail-arm servo, and, if so, have
you any advice as to the best way to install and set up such a servo
with relation to a Thames barge? Ray

I have updated the calendar on here using Richard Chesney's information
from the new AMBO website..... see link. Reminders are set to go via
email 4 days before the event. No Barleylands show this year? Is that
because of friction from a certain person...... very childish. It's the
public that looses. And it's AMBO that fills up one end of the marquee
and provides atmospheric sailing on the pond..... oh well not to be
vindictive but I hope it p**ses down and blows a gale that weekend!!

Of late I have heard that there has been an increase of AMBO members
using the pond at Maldon on a Thursday (every Thursday). The pond is a
public pond and it would be wise to ask members of the public what
frequency they are using before putting your pride and joy on the
water. There seems to be around 12 models there on Thursdays so please
go along......... the more the merrier - spread the word.

Good evening all: Was wondering why there has been very little activity
from the group. Or is it because of me?
Have posted new picture of my Barge. Have named it Ocean Gem of
Faversham in memory of my GG Grandfather James H. Elvy. Looking forward
to hearing from someone.

Sadly on the night of the 27th David Speight passed away. He will be
remembered by us all for his magnificent achievement in building from
scratch, the barge "British King II" in his backyard. At least he got
to see her used as he wished although he was too ill to leave his
bedroom when BK2 was loaded and taken away for the film (yet to be
released) "Attonement". Here is a local link which features David.
