Hello to all Old Boarzellians!

If nobody objects, I would like to set up a few extra sites/profiles on line for
Old Boarzellians and their families, to include extended families if possible.

Membership(s) will be free and based on the Old Boarzellian identifying himself
or herself, the years they attended, their house whilst at Boarzell or staff
post held and the members of their families they want included as site/profile
members.

I would like all members of these eventual sites/profiles to feel free and safe
to put contact telephones, e-mails and addresses on these sites, details of
which will be encrypted and invisible to all but bona fide members.

Of course, all members will have to agree to strict terms and conditions with
regard to sales-related content although, within reason and where there is a
recognised and acceptable socially beneficial function, some commercial content
should be allowed.

This is my latest restricted "social networking" idea. I hope some of you will
like and approve it.

With thanks,

Paul Owen.

Hello everyone,

we went to Boarzell aka Pashley Manor today (23 07 09) and were very interested
in the new history, fake tudor faηade, etc.

Many thanks to Michael for posting so many of the original photos and their
dates on this site for the record.

I think the reunion will be great fun. See you all there!

All the best,

Paul Owen.

Dear Old Boarzellian

One day in 1969 Richard Dumbreck put the slipper away in the bottom drawer of
his desk, adjusted his bow tie, smoothed down the corners of his moustache, and
wrote in the Boarzell Magazine:

"The fact that the year 1969 is our Diamond Jubilee seems to have gone
unrecognised, as did our Fiftieth Anniversary … The next date to remember is
2009, when it is to be hoped that Boarzell's centenary will not be allowed to
pass without fitting recognition."

Mr D died just six years short of the anniversary he foresaw, but of course he
was right – this is an occasion which really does deserve to be recognised in
some special way.

This message is to give you early notice that a plan is afoot, and that it's
about as `fitting' as it could possibly be - because in this special year the
event will be held in part at a very fitting place: Boarzell itself.

The date is Saturday 26 September.

The event will be open to all ex-pupils and staff of the prep school, and their
spouses.

The old school is now a family house again, but the owner, David Smart, has
kindly agreed to allow us access to the gardens and some limited access to part
of the house itself during the afternoon.

Here's the outline for day: those who wish will be able to attend a service at
Ticehurst church at noon. Then we'll have lunch nearby. Those not wanting to
attend the service can go straight to the lunch venue. After lunch we'll head
off to Boarzell and spend a couple of hours there reflecting on how much smaller
it is than we remember, and then we'll disperse or go to the pub.

The overall charge would be somewhere between £35-50. We will do all we can to
keep it to a reasonable minimum but planning is at an early stage and before we
can take things much further (including settling on the lunch venue) we now need
to know urgently what kind of numbers to expect. Arrangements can then be
finalised and costs calculated.

Could you please therefore contact Richard Rogers (Boarzell 47-48) by email at
richard@..., or by snailmail at Ash Tree Cottage, Eden Road,
Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN1 1TS with an indication of whether you're interested in
attending:
- the lunch (starts about 1.15 pm) and subsequent visit to Boarzell
- the service at Ticehurst (starts at noon)
Please also indicate whether you're interested in bringing your wife.

On the basis of replies received, we'll firm up all the arrangements and write
again with full details and a formal invitation.

Finally – this message is being sent to all OBs whose addresses are on the
current database. Some of these addresses will have changed since then. It
would therefore be much appreciated if you could spread the word among those OBs
with whom you are yourself in touch in case they'd otherwise be missed, asking
them to contact Richard Rogers.

Obviously this is very likely to be an unrepeatable opportunity; we hope very
much that you'll take advantage of it, and look forward to seeing you all back
in our old haunts so we can relive a few memories.

Maybe we should organise a Grand Conker Tournament followed by a race to
Cooper's Corner and back - Drake and Sidney v Raleigh and Grenville? All ideas
(and ambulances) gratefully received!

With best wishes
Stephen Bagnold (Boarzell 1955-60)

Hi,

I heard from George today about the planned centenary reunion but haven't been
to this site for a very long time and hardly ever use Yahoo mail.

I would be grateful for any information about this e.g. date, venue, price,
accomodation, etc.

I was also very glad to hear George has been in touch with a fellow chorister
from my time!

All the best,

Paul Owen.

P.S. please send any Boarzell news to paulrichardowen@... as well as my
Yahoo ID. Thanks!

Yahoo did not quite manage to prevent someone getting in and sending a
couple of spam messages. I have deleted the messages and expunged the
offending user.

Also in future no-one can send/post messages without approval nor can
anyone join without approval. That should keep the nasties out.

If you do see any other undesirable activity please let me know and I
will try to resolve it.

And keep up the good work in sharing the community knowledge !

From James Bettley:

Some photos have been added (see photo gallery in Boarzell group):

- Two images from the original architect of the Boarzell building
published in a journal called Academy Architecture, 1911. Unfortunately
it is not very clear from the plan just what the additions amounted to,
but if you look closely you can see that some of the walls are hatched
and others solid. Does anyone know the date of the original building,
I wonder, and was it by the same architect? One can see who the
building was made for (Sir Freddie Fison) and the plans show the
typical stately home layout (Butler's pantry with plate safe etc.). The
dining room used to be the billard room !

- Two images from the sporting and cultural life of Boarzell: lots of
kids in pink blazers near the pavillion and the cast of the Willow
Pattern play.

Enjoy!

I studied at Boarzell between 1970 and 1974 and would like to get in
touch with any of my long-lost friends and colleagues from around that
time. I have very fond memories of my time at the school and am keen
to reminisce and to find out what became of so many of you who
influenced and helped shape my life.

In the "files" section of the Boarzell group
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Boarzell/files/ you will see
the guest list of the reunion of 3rd Nov 05. In it you will see the
names and dates of several ex-Boarzellians who were there during your
time and active in the Boarzell network.

If you then wish to contact any one, go to the "members" section and
write to them directly. I am sure they will be delighted.

Some people have also provided more explict details about themselves in
the "database" section. For privacy reasons we cannot do this centrally
for all - but is on a voluntary basis only.

I hope you find your mates. If you need any more help let me know.

Best regards
Michael

Thank you to all involved for getting these enchanting photographs on
the web. I so much enjoyed the last reunion and I hope that in a year
or two you will arrange another. I left fully intending to contact so
many people and have not done so - almost afraid to break the magic,
perhaps.

Chris,

just go to http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/boarzell/ and click the
blue "Join this group" button on the right.

Then use your Yahoo userid (which in your case I believe to be
cejwilton) and you password. If you don't have it (or have forgotten
it) then click the blue "Sign up" or "Forgot your ID or password?"
links.

Hope that helps.
If not, just let me know.

All the best
Michael

Many thanks Michael for publishing these. Lots of work for you. All the
scans were taken from original photos owned by Robin Marshall, who
kindly lent them to me. Many thanks Robin.

If anyone has a copy of the 1950 pic it would be good to post it here
too. Any takers?

I'd love to browse through the photos, but am ashamed to admit that I have

A complete, well almost, set of Boarzell School Photos together with
all the names of the pupils and staff of each year has been uploaded
to the Boarzell Yahoo Group website.

Thanks to Stephen Bagnold for collecting every single one of the
annual Boarzell photos from 1946 to 1974, the year the school closed.

Ever wanted to know what you and your friends looked like 50 years
ago ? Well, maybe you like to have a look despite that ...
