MABON – Equinox. The last Sabbat of the year, Mabon, is named for the Welsh God who is called the 'great son.' This festival is celebrated at the autumn equinox and marks the second of the three harvests. Apple and berry harvesting, cemetery visitations, and wine making are a central feature of this observance. In Welsh mythology, Mabon was stolen from his mother when he was three days old and taken to live in the dark underworld until rescued in the spring. This myth underscores the fact that after this night of balance, darkness emerges triumphant over the light, and will remain so until Ostara.

Dear Squad, Please find below the information regarding the selections for the Europeans in Sweden. Event to take place on Sunday 23 September 2007, at SCORPION CENTRE, 25-27 FELIX ROAD, EASTON, BRISTOL. BS5 0JP. TEL: 07810-526054. This squad training event will be run a little different than normal. We will be holding the training as follows: KATA 10.00AM-12.00PM training and selections. 12.00PM-1.00PM Competition conditioning for international Athlete 1.00pm-2.30pm Training Kumite 2.30-4.30pm Selections. The 12.00pm-1.00pm session by Willi Thomas 6th Dan. Willi is six times World Karate champion and a former England national coach.  This seminar will be for both Kata and the Kumite and will be about competition conditioning. We at Wado Kai England are very lucky to have such an experienced person able to join us for this hour and both the Kata and Kumite members will gain a lot of knowledge from this seminar. The Dojo that we are using is fully matted, however as always I would recommend that students bring training shoes to train in. The last thing we want students injuring their feet this close to the Europeans. As the venue is a Dojo and not a leisure centre, please bring your flasks of tea and coffee and lots of food with you. You are all aware of the situation regarding finances for Wado Kai England this year and will appreciate that by using the Scorpion Karate Club Dojo as a venue for squad training; we have saved the cost of using a leisure centre. This will enable us to put funding back into Wado Kai England for the Europeans. For future open squad training we will be using leisure centres. The cost of the training will be a little more than normal this time: £12 JNR. £15 SNR. However, please note that the closed squad training for the selected squad going to the Europeans will be free of charge. Over the next week I will be explaining what funding will be available for the squad for the Europeans, and what merchandise the squad will be getting. Vince Parker and I, along with the management of Wado Kai England, have arranged a WADO ONLY Kata competition in October in the Midlands. The purpose of this event will be to raise money for the squad in Sweden. Details will be sent out shortly. I would encourage all Clubs to attend this event and suggest even the Kumite members have a go at the Kata in the interest of fundraising. I have to send my apologies as I am not able to attend this squad training due to being at a work conference the whole weekend in the centre of London that I can't get out of. I would have really liked to have been there, and wish all the squad the very best for selections, you have all worked very hard over the past year, and should all be very happy with your achievements. Dave Finch will be there in my absence to pass on all information. Kind Regards, Tom Clarke. Tom Clarke

TENSHO CHI OPEN COURSE. Instructor Paul Elliott 6th Dan Renshi at Tanbridge School, Guildford Road, Horsham, West Sussex. 10.00am to 1.00pm price £10.00 open to all students above the age of nine. Tensho Chi Combat is based on the Kata Tensho and is a highly developed form of Self Defence consisting of short and long range Defence System. Tensho Chi Combat is a complete system using strikes, arm and wrist locks, and pushing hand techniques using the attacker's energy against them. Tensho Chi Combat is a unique form of Martial Art. All the Kata (Forms) are based upon a set of movements. Each Kata is performed according to its own 'Way' or feel. The application of each Kata is then taught the Kata 'Way'. One movement from one Kata may be a very hard technique. The same movement from another Kata could be done very softly. These same movements could also be used for escaping, restraining and using the person's energy against them. When using these forms in a Combat way the student can flow freely from one movement or could sense or feel the attacker type of movement, depending on what type of attack was being made. Within the system, strikes and counters are made to various energy centres (chakras) and energy pathways (meridians). This has the result of disabling an attacker without using excess force. This of course takes years of practicing the Kata and using appropriate exercises. To be able to perfect these skills one must be very aware about the use of one's chi and know it, and that it can be controlled. Tensho Chi Combat is a Martial Art that uses Hard & Soft techniques that are used in both Chinese and Japanese Martial Arts. Within these applications are also psychological, meditation and visualisation techniques used to avoid confrontation. One has to have an inner calm, and inner awareness to be able to perform these techniques under pressure in a way which is effective.
