A £10,000 reward was put up today by detectives hunting the killer of 16-year-old Ben Hitchcock.

The teenager was stabbed during a street brawl between two groups of youths in Beckenham, south east London.

Police hope the substantial reward will encourage someone to come forward with the evidence they need.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Garwood said officers have been trying to reach out to young people in the area to gather information.

He said: "We have used websites such as Gone Too Soon. Last week we visited a local youth club - Streetwise - frequented by Ben.

"We are certain that someone knows who used the knife that killed Ben. We need to hear from them, for the sake of Ben's family and many friends."

Ben, of Penge, was murdered in Southend Road after a fight started over a private party on June 23 at about 11pm.

A small group of youths tried to gain entry to the house in Copers Cope Road, but had no tickets and were turned away.

After the party finished, fighting broke out in the street involving up to 40 young people.

Several residents dialled 999 and when police arrived they found Ben suffering from stab wounds. He later died in hospital.

The incident is being investigated by homicide and serious crime command, based at Lewisham.

In total 18 people have been arrested in connection with Ben's death. They have all been released on bail.

Anyone with information should contact the incident room on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
