Stolen car recovery scheme suspended
A scheme under which drivers were charged to recover their stolen cars has been suspended after concerns were raised by police watchdogs.
Operation Recover has been taking place on a private basis in five London boroughs - Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Bromley and Croydon.
It involves the compulsory recovery of abandoned stolen vehicles to a car pound for forensic examination and subsequent collection by the owner, who must meet the cost of removal and storage.
A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority, which oversees the Metropolitan Police, was told that members had raised concerns about the charging of victims of crime.
The meeting was told: "The initiative has been suspended since Monday pending the submission of a full report for consideration at a February meeting of the MPA finance committee."
