He'll kill again

A BRUTAL screwdriver killer could be free to strike again after just 17 months, the victim’s family warned last night.

Darrell McLeish was 19 when he plunged the tool into 29-year-old artist David Rodway’s skull.

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was given an “indefinite hospital order”.

Brother Lee, 27, said: “I’m concerned McLeish will kill someone else. The decision makes you lose faith in the law. This sends out the wrong message that you can kill someone, and get away with it. It should be a life for a life.”

Mum Maureen Johnson, 54, of Bromley, South London, said: “I sobbed my heart out when I heard the news. This is not justice.”

Bromley Chief Superintendent Charles Griggs questioned McLeish’s “miraculous recovery”. He said:

“I’m no doctor but I find it bizarre.” When arrested, McLeish asked a cop: “How long would I have to serve before I go on parole?”

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, which cares for McLeish, said patients face a “comprehensive assessment of risk” before day release.
