WEATHER: RSPB warns about bird deaths
10:24am Tuesday 3rd February 2009
BIRDS are in danger of freezing or starving to death because of the snowy weather this week.
Residents are being urged to put out fatty scraps and water to help birds survive the cold.
The RSPB says the heavy snowfall has covered vital food sources like seeds, berries and grubs leaving the feathered creatures struggling to feed themselves and keep warm.
RSPB spokesman Tim Webb said: "For a bird, food means more than just keeping your stomach full.
"It means maintaining body temperature to keep warm to survive another bitter night.
"Birds can't store fat like mammals, yet have a relatively high body temperature.
"Without food for energy, they will die.
"Many birds spend most of their waking-hours finding food and water."
Mr Webb added: "Putting out bread will fill their tummies, but they need energy from fat and protein to maintain health.
"Clean, un-frozen water to wash and drink is also crucial."
