Yes - Sadly even if they DO have "WEP" security switched on, it's still pretty easy to crack if someone knows what they're doing and have the right software.

"WPA" is of course recommended over WEP, but that too is crackable (with a dictionary attack), especially with default or simple Keys.

It's important to mention that people should use long complex Keys, which preferably have a good mix of Uppercase, Lowercase, Numerics and other

non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. slashes, hashes, percent, asterisk, etc).

Hi Dave,

I have heard that people drive around and find unprotected wireless connections and use the either to just surf the net, or to pinch users details. Both of which I believe are illegal.

I posted a note through everyone’s door at the weekend, and have offered to help check if their network is secure, we have a number of elderly residents in the road that may not realise.

I have a look myself and found 2 wireless connections in our road that aren’t locked down, still not sure who’s they are yet, but have had a couple of people ask me to check theirs and they are OK.
