BROMLEY BOROUGH POLICE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH INTELLIGENCE TASKINGS

Operation Endeavour

In response to a significant increase in vehicle crime officers from Bromley yesterday launched a series of raids on addresses suspected of being linked to the handling of goods stolen from vehicles in the southern area of the borough.

At 5am 44 officers led by Inspector Nick Bennett were briefed at Bromley Police Station and travelled to a number of addresses in the St Mary Cray area to execute search warrants.

Officers recovered a wide range if items including satellite navigation components, iPods, a large quantity of power tools, golf equipment, a quad bike and vehicle identification plates. Drugs were also recovered.

The value of the property is expected to amount to several thousand pounds.

A total of 5 persons were arrested for offences of handling stolen goods and possession of drugs. All are currently being held at Bromley Police Station for questioning.

Officers are currently working to identify the owners of the recovered property,

Yesterday_s events are a key element of Operation Endeavour. This operation is targeting criminals responsible for robbery, burglary and vehicle crime across the borough.

Security marking your property couldn_t be simpler, just obtain a security marker pen from any good stationer, and write your postcode on an un-removable component of your valuables. (For example you might mark your mobile inside the well that the battery sits in.) This mark is invisible to the naked eye, but becomes visible when presented to a fluorescent light.

Safer Neighbourhood Panels

If you are interested in sitting on a SN panel, please contact your ward Sergeant. (Their contact details were included in this newsletter a couple of weeks ago).

The census data for Bromley,  shows that a significant number of our residents travel to other boroughs for work. If you are interested in being on a panel for the ward you work on, then please contact Nazan Djemal Nazan.DJEMAL2@...  . The panels should be made up of a diverse mix of the key stakeholders of a ward. Key stakeholders are residents, retailers, schools, businesses, places of worship, and commuters, to name but a few, all with very unique issues. We are committed to ward panels being representative of all the key stakeholders relevant to that ward.

If you do commute to another borough, and would like to contribute to the ward panel of the ward you work on, please e-mail your details to the e-mail address above and I will pass them on to the relevant Sergeant on the borough you work in.

No need to PAY if you don't DISPLAY

Having your belongings stolen from your car, or worse still the car itself being stolen is annoying. It can also be costly and upsetting. Property being stolen from cars is a particular problem especially in the Northern and Southern parts of the borough at the moment. Three quarters of thefts which take place in the evening or at night happen when cars are parked near or outside the home. The good news is it's easy to outsmart the criminal - just don't leave anything in your car when you leave it parked, especially at night. Sat Navs,  Mobile phones, laptop computers, cheque books, even an old coat on the back seat might tempt someone to smash and grab -just in case it's valuable.

Leave it on show expect it to go!!

So don't leave anything on display in your car _ except your parking ticket of course.

§         If you have a garage, keep your car in it and remember to lock both your car and garage.

§         Get a professionally fitted Thatcham-approved electronic immobiliser (you can find an approved installer through the Vehicle Systems Installation Board at www.vsib.co.uk), or you can use a steering lock on older cars.  You can find information on products that have been tested by Thatcham (0870 5502006) or Sold Secure (01327 264687).

§         When purchasing a new car, check out the list of top 70 vehicles which are safest from theft. These are highlighted by the Car Theft Index and by British Insurance Car Security Awards listed on www.thatcham.org.

Consider fitting a car alarm

You can find out more by visiting www.secureyourmotor.gov.uk, or by speaking to your crime reduction officer at your local police station. You'll find the number in your phone book.
