Voluntary groups can get financial help with broadband connection costs

PublicTechnology.net has details on the BT Community Connections scheme. The scheme works to get voluntary and community groups Internet ready computers and a contribution towards the first years broadband access.

BT has apparently invested £4 million into the scheme, with 4,500 computers going out to groups across the country. This year they are expecting to hand out 1,300 awards to those groups that can demonstrate how a computer and broadband connection will benefit their work and local community.

Access to the Internet at the community level is becoming more and more important, both in terms of educating people how to use the Internet, but also to allow those who cannot afford a computer or ongoing costs of a broadband connection to engage in what is becoming a more critical service.
