500 fewer crimes across the borough
25 October 2006
CRIME in the borough has dropped, according to the latest Met Police figures, writes Chris Poynton.
Bromley's crime dropped by 1.7 per cent in the first six months of the year, mirroring the trend in London, with a 7 per cent drop in overall crime, equates to 35,500 fewer offences being committed.
Residential burglaries for September were at a record low, with 2,228 fewer offences occurring (down 7.3 per cent).
Violent crime has fallen 5.1 per cent, with 6,000 fewer crimes being committed.
London Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "Once again we have seen that crime is falling in Bromley, which is good news for residents. There have been dramatic reductions in gun-enabled crime, murders and business crime, but we cannot afford to be complacent."
He claimed the fall was the result of expanding the Safer Neighbourhood programmes that was central to his budget for this year.
He added: "By the end of December this year, every neighbourhood in London will have a community-based policing team of one sergeant, two police constables and three community support officers."
Superintendent Matt Bell, from Bromley Police, said: "I am really pleased to that that the hard work of Bromley's police officers, Community Support Officers and police staff has resulted in a decrease in crimes in the borough. So far we have had over 500 fewer offences this year compared to last year.
