London Contact Improvisation

Contact improvisation classes and jams are held every Saturday starting October 8 2005 at Moving East in Stoke Newington.  All levels of experience are welcome and booking is not required.  To attend the class please arrive at 11.15 in order to start at 11.30.  The class is followed by a three-hour jam which can be attended independently of the class.

David Leahy will play double bass at the jam this coming Saturday 5 November.  A professional bass player originally from New Zealand, David is an experienced improviser and dance accompanist.  He directs his own company, Daf Promotions, which has been responsible for numerous tours around NZ and the First International Jazz Festival 1997.

Caroline Waters will teach the next two classes at Moving East on Saturdays 5 & 12 November:

Developing strength from within. Referencing Ki-aikido work, one of the source materials for CI, we will be working to recognize
the difference between dancing with muscle and energy. Experiencing a satisfactory way to achieve a solid, safe point of contact, we’ll roll from the floor to the sky. Open to all levels, visually impaired welcome.

Caroline Waters is an international dance/theatre practitioner dedicated to the craft of improvisation in performance and the study of contact improvisation. Originally trained by Steve Paxton, Mary Fulkerson Kirsty Simson  etc she has over the past 15 years been developing her collaborative practice with artists from many continents and art forms. When not travelling, teaching and performing internationally she is as associate lecturer at Dartington College of Arts UK.

INSIDE OUTSIDE UPSIDE DOWN!!!

a contact improvisation day workshop of topsy-turvy skills with
Pen Dale (from down-under)

Sunday 20 November 2005, 11:00 – 18:00

In contact improvisation training, we try to develop in our movement an awareness of a 360 degree kinesphere - this allows for the most choice available at any moment in the dance, and expands our ability to improvise within the form.  And hell, it makes for more fun too.  Our choice (and therefore our fun) is more limited if we are only comfortable in an upright position.  We spend most of our lives upright, so it is only normal that we get a little unnerved by being upside down.....  This day will help us to develop more comfort in inverted dancing, through understanding how our body structure works with gravity when it is upside down.  We will also look at how an upright body can relate to one that is upside down - how we can best support others when they are inverted in the dance, whether in the air or on the ground.  And of course we will dance dance dance to integrate these skills into a topsy turvy playground......

movingartsbase
134 Liverpool Road
Islington, N1 1LA

Cost: £30 / £25 / £20

Info & bookings: Robert 07792 377 343 / robert@...

Pen Dale originally trained in more mainstream dance before realizing that improvisation was much more interesting!  Since then she has trained with many fabulous teachers, including Nancy Stark Smith, Martin Keogh and Kirstie Simson (amongst many others).  Currently based in Berlin, she spends her time travelling and teaching throughout the States and Europe, sharing her enthusiasm for the form.

Please note:  This day is aimed at people with 'some' contact experience (ie. not your first class)  If you are at all uncertain about whether to attend, please feel free to contact Pen or Robert.  Thanks and see you there!
