“Story in the Making” - Dialogue and Composition in Contact Improvisation
A variety of systematic approaches to communication in partner and improvisational dancing will be offered. We will explore specific skills concerning timing, use of space, and different methods of initiating and exiting contact to open the range of choices available to us in jamming or performing situations.
We will continuously bring the practice into dancing sets to integrate our conceptual and creative processes.

Contact Improvisation Toolkit:
Skills for Navigation in Jam, Audition and Performance Situations
This research atelier will propose techniques to enhance the ‘question-asking’ component of partnering.
The aim is to create precision, presence and differentiation in our dancing through the use of limitation and working with “palettes” that facilitate clear perception of what is happening. We will also look at the practical value of distinguishing “contact” forms from other “mover/partner” approaches.
The intention is to integrate this informed partnering work into group improvisation situations with compositional and dramaturgical vigor.

Kurt Koegel was first introduced to contact by David Woodbury in New York in 1979.
Since 1988 he has been living, dancing, choreographing, and teaching in Europe, and more recently Asia, in both university and workshop environments. He has taught for festivals, universities and dance companies including Ultima Vez, Rosas, PARTS, SNDO, EDDC, SEAD, and the Korean National University of the Arts.
His background in Architecture, Theatre, and the Visual Arts; Feldenkrais, Pilates, Yoga, and Body-Mind Centering; combined with a passion for being in the natural environment, informs his movement research.
He loves to perform and is always seeking new opportunities to work for the stage.
