Mary Prestidge Contact Improvisation and related dance work

20th March 7.30 - 9.30 (open class)    21st-22nd March w/e workshop

A hugely influential dancer and teacher of improvisation & experimental dance. Mary’s generous, investigative approach to teaching makes this workshop suitable to all levels of experience

I am interested in working with the physical, mind full activities I have found useful in illuminating experiences of moving, dancing and performing.  Contact Improvisation is one of the activities we shall work with over the two days.  Its practice is about attending to the moment and keeping open and responsive to the signals within and outside of the body. Moving in contact with another person offers many options in terms of direction, and speed, resting and listening.  It allows for the interplay of different energetic states creating unique partnerships and conversations.

Simple scores and tasks will provide playful performance structures for solo, duo and group work and enable participants to observe each other’s dance making and moving explorations.   Mary Prestidge

Originally an Olympic gymnast in the 1960’s, Mary's first professional work was as a contemporary dancer with the dance company, Ballet Rambert.  In the mid 70’s she co-founded the radical X6 Dance Space and its successor Chisenhale Dance Space, in London. She has continued to evolve new work through collaboration with other artists and art forms in a variety of performing contexts. She has been a lecturer in dance at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts since 1995 until 2008. She currently shares a studio in Liverpool with dance artists Andrea Buckley and Paula Hampson.
