Hello everyone,

Some of us (namely tenia, anne, david and maybe mark) have are thinking of
doing a contact event during the Make Poverty History March, which is a year

long campaign in Edinburgh to drop the debt of the 2/3s world, in response
to the meeting of the G8 in Perthshire in July!
We were thinking of dancing in the march together with the Samba band (the
Rythms of Resistance). With this we hope to demonstrate a peacefull,
creative and fun way to demonstrate. Also we think it is a good idea to show

that arts are in everyday life and are not remote from todays problems.
Thus, we need people to start thinking now whether they want to get
involved. We will do some training on contact and response to the
possibility of police repression about a month before the summit.

Some people of the campaing are renting a massive art and meeting space this

month! I was therefore wondering, if you think it would be a good idea to be

in their proposal, so that we can use the big space for our rehersals! I
will need to tell them by the end of this week.

a lot of things to think about, but really really exciting...

cheers,
tenia

Moving's View

Dance Improvisation Workshop
with Nancy Stark Smith, Susan Schell and Karen Nelson

June 17-24, 2005
At Earthdance in western Massachusetts

for more info contact Earthdance at 413.634.5678;
register@...; www.earthdance.net

Moving's View:

Spacious research into the forms of Contact Improvisation, Authentic
Movement, and Composition/Perfomance feed meaningful connections
between body and mind. 3 classes weave thru the day. Optional jams,
informal showings and Contemplative Dance Practice available during
free time. Experience in Contact Improvisation is helpful since skills
are reviewed but not emphasized.

Susan Schell has taught and performed dance throughout the US and
abroad. "Our work with nature requires a spirit of collaboration,
recognizing that we are not its audience or manipulators but an
intimate and equal member of its body."  She has been on the faculty of
several programs for the study of Authentic Movement and periodically
serves as adjunct faculty in dance at the University of Maine. Fall '02
she began work as a contributing editor for A Moving Journal, a
publication  exploring themes related to the practice and study of
Authentic Movement. She lives with her husband and two sons in
Chesterville, Maine.

Karen Nelson's 28-year dance and performance practice has been directly
influenced by Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson and their respective work in
Contact Improvisation, Material for the Spine and Tuning Scores, and
through collaboration with many others in venues around the world.
"Contact Improvisation's lesson of center, off center, giving center,
keeping center combined with spiral rolling and small dancing will
enliven the physical interactions between partners and in space." She
lives and care takes 240 acres of land in Goldendale, WA where she is
helping to build a meditation retreat facility.

Nancy Stark Smith danced in the first performances of Contact
Improvisation in 1972 and has since been centrally involved in its
development as dancer, teacher, performer, writer/publisher and
organizer, working with Steve Paxton and other favorite dance partners
and performance makers. "Working primarily with the Underscore, our
practice will address dancing comfortably in spherical space,
beginning/developing/ending connections with others, and deepening our
kinesthetic experience while sharpening our compositional eye."

   Z.Of 2005
ZIP.Orvietofestival 2005, international improvisation festival - live
performing arts, sixth edition: artistic and cultural project on
Contact Improvisation and its topics, in the historic palaces of
Orvieto, in Italy.

Five days of improvisational dance and music, with guest artists from
eight countries invited to collaborate in the creative production of
events, and to promote elaboration and cooperation for a trans-cultural
art.

Main theme of the Festival is the staging of improvisation
performances, mediated by the experiences and practices of Contact
Improvisation. This form of dance was first conceived in the United
States in the early seventies by the artist Steve Paxton, and  explores
the expressive possibilities of the body outside the predefined
codified schema of a classical conception of movement.

A cast with an international flavor makes up the sixth edition of
ZIP.Orvietofestival 2005.

Twenty guest artists will enliven the splendid Etruscan town with
their presence over a period of five days, from early morning until
late at night, in an exciting program of live dance and music, and a
busy schedule of four alternating intensive workshops on Contact
Improvisation, one intensive on Physical Cinema (Dance for the Camera),
ten laboratories organized around the themes of Contact Improvisation
and physicality, as well as performances, jams and concerts.

This program is decidedly outside the traditional canons of live
performance, and the ZIP.Orvietofestival offers  an audience that likes
to move within the sphere of improvisation an opportunity  to listen
and participate in the genesis of events.

Z.Of examines the processes of artistic interaction, creating contacts
and opportunities for cooperation between guest artists as they reveal
and share cultural and generational experiences, similarities and
differences, so that, together, they make the festival in Orvieto
happen.

The aim of the festival is to integrate generations, ethnicities,
physicalities and tastes.
ZIP.Orvietofestival creates an environment where a sensitive spectator
can breathe new life into the events.
It examines the physical and emotional orientation of a small
community in motion.

Although the guest artists come from different backgrounds, they
participate in questioning the codes of the performing arts in an
attempt to coin a feasible and varied vocabulary for the process of
communication.
This trans-cultural pole of men and women will open with the staging
of Real Time Compositions by guest artists and close with Jams that
bring the community in contact.

Z.Of is more than just a space inhabited by professionals in the field,
who come together in this place of possibility; it is a container for
creative horizons rooted in an original opportunity for a community to
get together in a safe environment outside the conventional commercial
circuits of the performing arts.

hi,
about the charging of money by Edinburgh Settlement,
I think the idea to apply for a Grant is the best way to face this problem,
i imagine that there are quite good possibilities to got one easily for this
kind of activities, but i dont know details about that . i'll inform on it .
it is also true that £30 or 20£ shared among us isn't that much...so if
Edinburgh Settlement cant give an extra period to use the place for free -
maybe Tenia you could ask the manager that....) , until we havent reached
another solution , i'm propense to spent 3/4 pounds
as I dont want louse the possibility of have Upstairs forest jam!

wishing to see you tonight

Dear Tenia,

£30 shared among us isn't that much...I sometimes think that 2 hours would
be fine,so it would only be £20..
Happy for you to decide whatever you want..a charge certainly wouldn't stop
me coming.

hi all,

the Edinburgh Settlement manager called me today to say they want us to sign
a contract with them to use the space upstairs at the Forest Cafe. They have
been desperate for money and will now start charging 10pounds an hour. so,
for our sunday sessions this means a total of 30 pounds...

I am meeting up with him on Monday, tried to delay it a bit to see what
everyone wants... Please tell me what you think we should do, i am
personally not willing to pay that amount. Maybe we can apply for a Grant...

ok, see you all tomoro maybe,
tenia

I think Dance House in Glasgow do classes for 3 - 5 year olds and 7 -
9's and 9 - 12's etc.
Don't know the full range or if there are one off workshops as well -
might be worth giving them a ring.
0141 332 1490 or email info@...
and of course the website is www.dancehouse.org
Dance education officers may know more, or SAC???
SpinalChord do some different workshops and events in between their
education work.
See www.spinalchord.com
They have quite a mix of stuff.( and they're very good )

Dear Anne,

just incase your still considering coming to the workshop...

We now have 13- 14 people coming and ideally I would like about 20...so
although
the early bookers discount has come and gone there is now a 'bring a
friend'
discount: If you bring a friend you both get into the workshop for £60
each...

Hope you can make it...

Best wishes

Steve

Following on from the popular success of the Out of Contact tour in
2003, Bodysurf Scotland brings together an exciting line-up of leading
international artists in an original programme of new work and live
music - a treat for dance and music lovers alike.
Turntable maestro Philip Jeck brings his unique, improvised sound to
the Arches to accompany two new dance pieces. Findhorn-based
choreographer Karl Jay-Lewin presents the premiere of his new work, No
Kidding, created for dancer Ruby Worth, while Rick Nodine (USA/England)
and Jovair Longo (Brazil/England), two of London's most celebrated
dance improvisers, show their continuing duet, Ongoing, a breathtaking
dance dialogue which mixes choreographed and improvised material.

Praise for Karl Jay-Lewin's previous work.
"... a touching, funny duet ... a relationship we rarely see given
genuine life on stage. **** "
