Bring in the new decade dancing at Claymont!  We'll gather from Wednesday, December 30th to Sunday, January 3rd.

... is four juicy days of dancing among the fields and paths at Claymont Court Estates, West Virginia, around one hour's car ride from Washington, DC, USA.

Welcoming all experience levels, the New Years East Coast Jam includes facilitated warm-ups, open dancing, a New Years Ritual, one or more evenings of performance, two dance spaces, shared lodging, luscious vegetarian meals by Mirabi, sauna, wide vistas, lots of outside spaces to explore. And the people you love dancing with most!

A day at the east coast jam goes something like this: We wake from glorious sleep to eat lovingly prepared breakfast, stroll through the apple orchard to the huge octagonal dance barn. After a facilitated warm-up each morning, we dance, sweat, dance, sweat, dance, sweat, sauna, then stroll back to the magnificent mansion.  After lunch we gather for a "town meeting," where we collaborate to create the jam, then we dance more, make music, nap, journal, give and get massages, tell stories, play games.

east coast jam attendees

teach a class, take a class, practice, learn, walk, play, move, sing, roll, leap, stretch, wander, cavort, breathe. Offerings might include authentic movement Action Theater, a beginning contact improv class, a moving and drawing structure, a discussion on current issues in the contact community, a yoga class, poetry and chocolate, an outdoor improvisation score... which we do till we're hungry enough for one more delicious meal. Evenings we dance more, sauna more, sing more, move more, play more, schmooze more, laugh more, talk more, walk more, sleep more, and eat peanut butter and honey on rice cakes and drink tea into the wee hours contemplating the important (or not so important) questions of our lives.

Cost is $295 for the full event, $245 for three nights, $185 for two nights, $95 for one night.

Late registration fee of $50 applies after December 20th if there is still room.

We need to hear from you soon if you're interested.  Please send in $50 to reserve your spot  You can pay and register via Paypal, or send your check to:

This workshop aims at finding context in physical expression, along with its reverse: using physicality as a device for locating oneself in our current times. Our focus will consider how we listen to the weight of a gesture, how we qualify our actions mindful of our context, and how we expand into our technical range.

What's the path from idea to dancing? What in the world stays outside the studio and what ideas accompany you when you're there? Where did you get stuck today, and is it the same as yesterday? What's the range of your weight at risk? These are useful questions to instigate action and conversation, to help in using our studio mindset as a creative practice.

We'll begin the day with a warm-up that uses various methods to arrive at an energized body attuned to detailed, full-bodied dance. During the course of the week we'll use improvisational and compositional strategies to generate movement. Locating initiation and focus in the body, in dynamic, in phrase-making and state-making, we will accumulate dance "matter" in line, hopefully, with our lives.

Bebe Miller has been making dances for over 20 years and formed Bebe Miller Company in 1985. Known for a mix of virtuosic dancing and fundamental humanity, her choreography has been produced at major dance centers throughout the US and abroad. In addition to ongoing work with her ensemble, Miller has received commissions from Boston Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Philadanco, Phoenix Dance Company in Great Britain and Johannesburg's PATH Dance Company, among others. Collaboration being fundamental to her creative process, she has worked with numerous dancers, composers, visual artists, writers, filmmakers and directors; she has received four Bessie Awards for choreography and direction, most recently for her collaboration with the eleven-member creative team in Landing/Place (2005). She is a Full Professor in Dance at The Ohio State University and spends the fall months in the Seattle area.
