Claymont Court Estates, West Virginia, around one hour's car
ride from Washington, DC, USA.

warm-ups, open dancing, a New Years Ritual, one or more evenings of performance, two dance spaces, shared
lodging, luscious vegetarian meals by Mirabi, sauna, wide vistas, lots of outside
spaces to explore. And the people you love dancing with most!
A day at the east coast jam goes something like this: We wake from
glorious sleep to eat lovingly prepared breakfast, stroll through the apple
orchard to the huge octagonal dance barn.
After a facilitated warm-up each morning, we dance, sweat, dance, sweat,
dance, sweat, sauna, then stroll back to the magnificent mansion. After lunch we gather
for a "town meeting," where we collaborate to create the jam, then we dance
more, make music, nap, journal, give and get massages, tell stories, play games.

This workshop aims at finding context in physical expression, along with its reverse: using physicality as a device for locating oneself in our current times. Our focus will consider how we listen to the weight of a gesture, how we qualify our actions mindful of our context, and how we expand into our technical range.
What's the path from idea to dancing? What in the world stays outside the studio and what ideas accompany you when you're there? Where did you get stuck today, and is it the same as yesterday? What's the range of your weight at risk? These are useful questions to instigate action and conversation, to help in using our studio mindset as a creative practice.
We'll begin the day with a warm-up that uses various methods to arrive at an energized body attuned to detailed, full-bodied dance. During the course of the week we'll use improvisational and compositional strategies to generate movement. Locating initiation and focus in the body, in dynamic, in phrase-making and state-making, we will accumulate dance "matter" in line, hopefully, with our lives.

Contact Improvisation withRobert Anderson & Karl Jay-Lewin
28th & 29th November
A workshop for both those new to Contact Improvisation and for more experienced dancers who want to deepen their study of the principles that underlie a contact dance.
“Karl and Robert work brilliantly together, I enjoyed their teaching especially as a Contact Improvisation newbie …” New Year Event 08/09
The emphasis is not on achieving postures but using them to undo tension and find integration. The practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the parts of the body and between our movements and the breath, the ground and the space around us.
