British Waterways – Stourport Canal Basins Restoration
Volunteer and Training Opportunities
British Waterways have a Volunteer Programme connected to the
Stourport Canal Basins Restoration. The programme aims to get people
involved in the project and assist us with the work. As part of the
programme we are offering a number of training opportunities for
volunteers to learn how to re-point and repair the historic brick
walls on the site using lime mortar and British Waterways would also
like to extend the opportunity to Conservation Officers.
We have organised two different sessions to carry out this task on
the following dates:
27th – 28th October 2007 (Saturday and Sunday)
30th October – 4th November 2007 (Tuesday – Sunday)
Each day will begin at 9:30am and finish at 4:00pm
There are two separate training days at the beginning of each
session (27th and 30th October) which will be facilitated by a lime
mortar expert. All participants will be required to attend one of
these training days on their first day to learn the skills needed to
repair and re-point the brick work using lime mortar. There is not
cost for the training day however, in return for providing the
training, British Waterways require at least 3 additional days to
assist us with the completion of the repair work.
Below is a brief description of the training to give you further
information on this specific task. Unfortunately spaces for each day
are limited and will be offered to people on a first come first
serve basis.
Repair and re-point brickwork to historic walls
Volunteers are required to assist with the restoration of Stourport
Canal Basins by repairing and re-pointing the historic walls of the
lower basin area. The task requires volunteers to rake out damaged
mortar and refill the joints with fresh lime mortar. A conservation
expert will provide full training into the background and use of
lime mortar giving all volunteers the necessary skills and equipment
required to carry out the task.
People skilled in this type of work would be advantageous however no
skills or qualifications are required as full training will be
given. Due to the manual nature of the task, volunteers are required
to possess a reasonable level of physical ability. The work will not
take place close to the water edge and will be carried out from head
height to ground level. Life jackets and safety equipment will be
provided where necessary.
