Chillington Interchange basin Monmore Green Wolverhampton - IMPORTAN   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #31 of 613 |
The Railway / Canal interchange basin at Monmore Green is not being
maintained by English Welsh & Scottish Railways. Nick Hogben, senior
enviromental officer at Wolverhampton City Council has advised that
in order to effect pressure on EWS to carry out repairs and
maintenance, the more complaints received the better. I initially
contact English Heritage for advice on how to proceed with this
complaint, their advice was that it has to be the City council to
enforce the grade 2 listing conservation rules. Please can members
email Nick at nick.hogben@... as soon as possible.
The body of my letter to nick is shown below:

"Sadly I am writing to you with great concern over another piece of
neglected transport heritage, this time in Wolverhampton.

Chillington Wharf ref: SO9255 9804 895-0/5/10012 24/9/95
Location, Chillington St Wolverhampton.

This interchange basin is complete with all track, cranes and watered
basins intact. It is owned by English, Welsh & Scottish Railways and
is listed grade 2. The site is now unique and represents the trade
which developed when the railways took over as prime carriers but
still adopted the freight routes created by adjoining waterways.

A recent visual survey revealed the structure to be approaching a
point where retention may be questionable. No maintenance of the
structure is apparent, the woodwork and roofing are deteriorating
extensively, worse the site is readily accessible to the determined
vandal. Another very worrying observation was that tracks had been
cut in one place, indicating potential removal? As the track is
listed this IS of concern.

I know recent representations made to EWS have gone no where, could I
please ask you to investigate this site with perhaps a view to
imposing a more strategic listing on the site encouraging EWS to take
responsibility more seriously.

There is huge future potential for this site, restored craft could be
displayed alongside period rolling stock and the whole structure
could easily be placed on the industrial tourist map.

At a recent meeting of the BCN Heritage retention group, Roger
Herrington general manager of British Waterways West Midlands
expressed concern and support for the retention of this waterside
feature, no doubt there will be support for retention and
conservation from many interested parties.

Could you please contact EWS with some urgency and enforce their
requirement to maintain the structure, I would welcome knowledge of
their reply.

Recent images available if required."
Best regards,
Laurence Hogg
