Regarding Thomas Best
Thomas died in 1833, I believe he only had daughters. He was in partnership
with William Tunley who died 1818 at an early age. In addition to Best's
wharf at Wolverhampton established between 1813 and 1814, there was also a
depot on the Bond End Canal. Thomas Best's wife continued the trade for
about a year after Thomas's death and then James Shipton became involved.
The Cheese and Butter warehouse, which originally had been used for spinning
wool etc for carpet trade and later the Factory engaged in various trades
was enlarged in Shiptons time to occupy half of Best's wharf. The Factory
Wharf was later taken by Shipton as a Timber Wharf, when he was forced to
move away from his yard north of Nortons Mill.
Parts of Best's Wharf Buildings still stand, but are not listed. The
Wharfingers House, the subject of the order for demolition 16B Union Mill
Street are grade II listed.
It would help if people could oppose the scheme for redevelopment.
