Dear All
The cast iron towpath bridge over the Old Main Line at Bromford
Junction is due to be repaired in July / August. I am trying to
ascertain whether the access approach to the bridge from Spon Lane
Lock No 3 was a ramp or whether it was steps. I have looked at other
bridges in this area and they have ramp approaches. However, this
particular approach is steeper and thus may have necessitated steps.
I would appreciate any information which may be available prior to
minor excavation work which will hopefully reveal the original
surface of the access approach to the bridge. I have included the
list description of the bridge below. The OS reference of the bridge
is E399759 N289909
`Footbridge over the Old Main Line (Wolverhampton Level) of the
Birmingham Canal at its junction with Telford's New Main Line. 1829.
Cast-iron with brick abutments having some sandstone dressings.
Single elliptical arch. Each side formed from two castings, bolted
to central "keystone". Sides pierced to form pattern of saltire
crosses, with a band of quatrefoils under the handrail. Spandrel
inscribed: "HORSELEY IRON WORKS 1829".
Many thanks
Elizabeth Turner, Heritage Adviser, West Midlands Waterway.
