The Railway & Canal History Society has formed a new special interest group that is available to members, entitled Modern Transport.
I co-ordinate the pieces for inclusion in the newsletter which goes out at the same time as the Railway Chronology Newsletter. The Modern Transport Newsletter No 2 will include a piece on the nationalisation of the waterways.
The years 1948-1955 were particularly crucial to the future of our waterways network. The Docks & Inland Waterways Executive was a vehicle that enabled the take over of independent and railway owned navigations and their merger into a common network. Brief details of the happenings of the time appear in the D & IWE Board Minutes (PRO AN77) and the various successive boards of management (PRO AN71) These records sometimes mention boat sales. Has anybody taken the trouble to check these records.
