Hugh McKnight has asked me to forward the following message to this forum:
“H.R.Hodgkinson Photographs
“I am most grateful to Ray Shill for his comments and additions to captions in my "Canal Boat" feature on Mr. H.R.Hodgkinson's pictures. Also for providing details about Mr. Hodgkinson from his obituary.
“I am very concerned at the completely false and unfounded accusations made by Max Sinclair, regarding my acquisition of this set of pictures. The facts are very different indeed!
“Firstly, I was never General Secretary of the I.W.A. and I never worked in any capacity at the Association's London General Office. From 1965-1970 I edited the Association's national journal, "The Bulletin" as a part-time occupation, for which I was paid a small honorarium. From 1966 until the early 1970s (when I resigned on account of my writing commitments) I served as a Member of the I.W.A.'s National Council.
“At this period, the I.W.A.'s General Office occupied two rented first floor rooms at 114, Regent's Park Road, London, N.W.1. The premises had become very over-crowded and in either 1968 or possibly 1969 efforts were made to dispose of various accumulated items which were considered not to be relevant to the Association's campaigning and the efficient running of the Office.
“Included among this material were the Hodgkinson photographs. The I.W.A.'s then National Chairman, aware of my considerable interest in canal history, suggested that I might like to have the Hodgkinson photographs. He clearly believed - as did I - that they were I.W.A. property and indeed had been for many years. He also considered that as a waterways writer and photographer I was in a better situation than the I.W.A. to make good use of the material. My recollection of this matter, now 40 years ago, is that if I had not accepted this photographic collection it might well have been consigned to the dustbin. Quite often, what is now considered as valuable historical material was once merely regarded as "old" or "out of date". Fortunately, I was able to appreciate the value of the collection and I am pleased that I have been responsible for its preservation for the last four decades.
“I am naturally interested in the future safe-keeping of Mr. Hodgkinson's photographs and would be only too pleased to discuss the matter with any surviving relatives of Mr. Hodgkinson if Mr. Sinclair is able to put me in touch with them.”
