The Lichfield Canal
Further Thoughts
Following the closure of the Lichfield Canal, land was sold off
breaking up the route between a number of different owners. The
restoration that followed has tackled specific locks and areas under
threat but the bulk of the route has remained untouched. Much is
inaccessible to walkers, which is sad because it is often difficult
to reach some of the heritage features of the waterway had.
For some time now I have held the view that certain sections of the
line of the waterway could have the dual role of canal and cycle
route. The canal from Muckley Corner through to Lichfield being a
particular case in view of the difficult, and even dangerous, roads
such as Fosseway where motorists speed down and walkers along this
road have to keep to the hedge to avoid vehicles.
A cycle route into Lichfield beside the canal would provide a much
more safer route into Lichfield and development of this proposal
might attract funding from a variety of sources.
