Based on a true story, "The Soloist" depicts journalist Steve Lopez's (Robert Downey Jr.) discovery of a mentally ill homeless man, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), who plays violin brilliantly on the streets of L.A. A transformative relationship blossoms as Lopez tries to help the former musical genius find his way.
Barely making a living selling pirated DVDs out of a cardboard box, Shawn (Channing Tatum) catches a break when Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) notices his brawling ability and introduces him to the underground bare knuckle circuit. Soon he must battle his toughest opponent to escape the seedy societal underbelly he's fought his way into.
It's year 2707, and a war over resources has decimated Earth. A stray explosion over a buried prison unleashes a mutant army that threatens human existence. An elite unit of mercenaries is dispatched to fulfill the "Mutant Chronicles" prophesy and save humanity.
Having achieved massive success as an asset manager, Derek Charles' (Idris Elba) picture-perfect life with wife Sharon (Beyonce Knowles) is jeopardized when temp worker Lisa (Ali Larter) becomes his obsessive stalker.
Given last week's record breaking success of "Hannah Montana" and this week's top box office spot going to "17 Again", it seems we can't get enough tween-tainment. Zac Efron has delivered on his first post-"High School Musical" performance to the tune of $23.7 million in its opening weekend.
Also on its opening weekend, big-budget political thriller "State of Play" (starring Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck) took second place with a solid showing of $14.1 million.
The Cyrus family cash-cow "Hannah Montana: The Movie," keeps delivering. Despite falling to third place, the movie has grossed an impressive $56.9 million in just two weeks.
In this prequel to the X-Men Trilogy, Hugh Jackman gets another crack at playing Wolverine, the role that first made him famous in 2000. The movie depicts Wolverine's violent coming-of-age and the tragic loss of his love interest Kayla Silver Fox (Lynn Collins). Also packed into the much-anticipated flick are encounters with William Stryker (Danny Huston), the Weapon X program, Wolverine's maniacal half-brother Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber).
It's not a terrible movie, but is forgettable and will probably be lost in the sea of summer released heading out. Ask yourself, has a film shot in 3D ever been worth a damn in the long run?
That's right: Zac Efron loves Back to the Future. See, don't you have a little more respect for him now? Cinematical picked up this tidbit via Teen Hollywood, which took Efron's admission of love for the classic trilogy to mean that he would happily play Marty in a remake. More
