Dear fairtraders,
On 19th January at the full council meetings, councillor maureen
flint proposed a motion asking the council to support fairtrade. This
included buying fairtrade tea and coffee, supporting it's promotion
and investigating other ways of support.
The council passed the motion unaminously. hurrah!
Councillor maureen flint is now leading a committee to look at
implementing the recommendations. i'm not sure how dacorum fairtrade
fits in yet but i'm hoping we can at least work with the council on
new initiatives.
A photo opportunity would be good now with a press release, anytime
between now and fairtrade fortnight.
Regards
Francois Henderson
Dear fairtraders,
i've not been very active lately on here because i've been working
double shifts in december trying to earn money.
You remember i mentioned there was an opportunity to get the new
consumer magazine to back a full colour publication for dacorum
fairtrade with a 10,000 copy print run. this is probably not a good
time to realize that there aren't enough fairtrade outlets out there
to justify such an ambitious project but i did get carried away
somewhat and hammered away at sponsors to raise the money for the
publication. please don't ask me how much it cost or i'll do an
impression of an ostrich and stick my head in the sand.
ostrich or not all the art copy is in, the accounts are being
settled, and i'm going to need help delivering this thing around to
as many people as you know. i'm hoping the fairtrade fortnight market
in marlowes is going to shift a few of them.
i need volunteers by the way to help me run the market stalls. don't
all raise your hands at once ...no on second thoughts...stampede your
offers of assistance to help with the day immediately.
There is a full council meeting next week on the 19th january i think
and i was going to address the full council but i've been so busy i
didnt' get around to putting my name down to speak. Still if i rush
the letter to the council by friday i might be able to say something.
At any rate i still wish the fairtrade town petition to circulate a
bit more so it might wait until fairtrade fortnight so i can make
sure it gets round to more people.
1000 people might sound like a modest target for a petition but i'd
feel comfortable with that figure if i had to stand up and talk for 3
minutes. This is the year that the campaign to make poverty history
is running and this year is also comic relief so it would be
marvellous if the council could pass a resolution declaring their
support if ...on nothing else ... at least a committment to promoting
fairtrade and serving tea and coffee at their meetings.
i do feel though that the new community plan which makes provision
for the fairtrade town as part of it's environmental agenda ought at
least to allow the council to act in support of initiatives that
dacorum fairtrade manages to fund.
if any of you out there havn't gone to sleep i'd be glad to hear your
comments. Meanwhile i think posting the draft layouts of the consumer
guide pdf's files on our website will help to 'sell' the support
needed for it's distribution.
Regards
Francois Henderson
The Turners, John and Cathy are both leaving these lands to live on
the island of St Helena. Their assistance in 2004 has been
invaluable, thanks to john's capable business skills and webmastering
contribution and to cathy for being a stalwart traidcraft trader and
helping the fairtrade market be successful and loads of other things
too.
A special dedication goes to her voluminous estate car which can hold
a full load of 4No. six foot and 8No. five foot trestle tables in one
go. We're gonna miss your estate car Cathy, oh....and we're gonna
miss you too and you too John.
So good luck to you both.
And WELCOME to our webmistress Paula Brown who is taking over the
running of the website. Well that's the dedications over... now down
to work.
Dear fairtraders,
Seasons greetings, an innocous statement in the light of the recent
asian tradgedy, as befits whatever season you wish to imagine
yourself in. I hope this new year will bring many positive changes
for us all and for the global citizens who will benefit from better
terms of trade, better aid and relief from the awful burden of debt
that cripples many economies.
It was my intention to talk to the council this january but i must
put it off until march, likewise the new consumer magazine i have not
found all the funds for the shopping directory and i fear the
deadline has expired for the copy. BUT there will be a fairtrade
shopping directory for this march in time for the fairtrade market
which is confirmed for the 12 march 2005 marlowes shopping centre.
Since this year is going to be historic with the make poverty history
campaign, and comic relief is on 11th march, one day before our
fairtrade market i feel it would be amazing if we could put together
something for the two days. Suggestions anybody? Does anybody know
any local celebs?
This gives a new lease of life to the fairtrade town petition which
i've decided can have it's potential maximised at the two events. A
post presentation to the council can then follow and we hope a
resolution.
i'm not sure how the election is going to feature anywhere in this
but with cross party support it shouldn't make any difference.
The website will be updated shortly.
That's all for now.
Regards
Francois
We now have a date for the Fairtrade Fortnight please make a note in
your diaries.
SATURDAY 12 MARCH, NORTH COURT, MARLOWES SHOPPING CENTRE, HEMEL
HEMPSTEAD. For an all day Multi Stall Fairtrade Market. I'll see if i
can bring in a few new traders from last year. If anybody want's to
volunteer i'm drawing up a schedule now.
This will go on the web site as an annoucement, we can probably use
the same poster and artwork we did before for now, unless i can think
of a new design. Hmm and there's reason to actually becuase 2005 is
going to be a special year with MAKE POVERTY HISTORY. Would be an idea
to start deisigning leaflets now.
Berkhamsted will do a fairtrade tasting outside waitrose and our Hemel
Churches Together rep will cover Sainsbury's in Apsleys retail park,
i'm going to cover Tesco's the week before hopefully.
Incidentally, as we had tony mcwalter last year and mike penning, i'm
extending the invitation to Richard grayson to come along and be part
of the press shoot. By then, maybe we'll have something more to say.
Hmm why don't i invite the mayor as well?
Does anybody know of any celeb's in the area?
Regards
Francois Henderson
Tony mcwalter won't be able to do the photocall at marks and spencers
this friday after all, but a future date is being drawn up for this
photo opportunity.
However, a council resolution is being drafted up so that we can make
a short presentation to the council in january or february next year
backed the the fist and secondment of two labour councellors, any
other councellors we can get is a bonus
I've left a couple of fairtrade footballs with adeyfield school, they
are impressed by the standard and i'll be getting back to them later.
The fairtrade town petition needs to be more widely circulated. Since
it is now available to download off the net please do so and pass it
around your friends and anyone else you can think of
Lets see if we can get a 1000 people by mid jan, we have about 200 or
so at the moment. Circulating it around a few business should help.
Regards
Francois
Dear fairtraders,
Please come and be in a photocall and bring all your friends. There
will be a photocall with Tony McWalter MP backing fairtrade at Marks &
Spencers Cafe Revive at the marlowes centre on Friday 10 December
between 9am and 11pm. As you know Marks and Spencers cafe revive now
serve fairtrade coffee.
i'd be glad if either mike penning or richard grayson can be there
too, well tony is our MP after all, but there's no reason why the
opposition should rally around.
Sorry for the short notice but this opportunity came out of the blue,
hmm or red even you might say.
Hoping to see you there...
Francois
Sorry for those who are reading this for the first time but there's a
meeting at the Old Mill Inn in Berkhamsted tomorrow night. Wed 1st
december at 8pm.
Members of Hemel and district friends of the earth, tring justice and
peace group, berkhamsted trade justice group, hemel churches together
and dacorum fairtrade will meet to discuss fairtrade issues and
network for events planned next year 2005.
Our website now has a photo of the mayor of dacorum signing our
fairtrade town petition. there is a download link for the petition but
the link seems to inactive at the moment, will investigate.
we need a new webmaster for the site now too, i've put an ad in with
dcvs for a new volunteer but if anybody knows someone that could take
on this role we'd be glad to hear from them. John Turner would
transfer the web ownership codes and management of the site and
provide instruction for the limited time he is still with us.
Monday 29 November 2004 All Day
This event does not repeat.
The next reminder for this event will be sent in 7 days, 3 minutes.
Event Location: HEMEL HEMPSTEAD LIBRARY COOMBE STREET Notes: Library Opening Hours.
At the charity fair at dacorum college the mayor was kind enough to
sign our petition. We got a digital picture of him signing it. great!
Tony McWalter our labour MP, also came around and added his signature
to it. I'd appreciate it if mike penning added his.
You may already have signed it mike but i say to you as i said to tony
mcwalter at the time, it's not much good to me if people don't return
the thing to dacorum fairtrade, then everybody says and knows they've
signed it but us!
So consequently i have the word of maureen flint that she's signed but
i don't have any proof telling me she has, so where are all these
signed petitions? i confess this was probably my fault as adding a
RETURN TO ADDRESS would have been helpful.
SO! Would all of you out there who have kindly signed the fairtrade
town petition give me a copy so i know who's signed what? the return
address is Dacorum Fairtrade Group c/o Francois Henderson, 89 Cedar
Walk, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.
i can tell you that thanks to help from friends and supporters we now
have around 100 signatures and this is not including signatures from
petitions that the labour, liberal and conservative parties have
contributed to. So that would probably double it again i hope. And
while i'm not planning to put names on the website without prior
permission, we can publish numbers of people who've signed.
Where are all these signatures going to go? well i hope to collect as
many as possible to support a meeting at the council in the new year
in the run up to fairtrade fortnight for events i'm planning now. If
we could get a council resolution for March Fairtrade Fortnight that
would be awesome! And very good for pr too!
i'm working on a newsletter now with the year's press cuttings and
stories. i'm planning to send this out to supporters on a quartely
basis.
On the subject of raising more money, there is something i would urge
people to support us on but i'm leaving that to a seperate post as
it's easier to segregate different subjects into mail headings.
There is an environment forum meeting next week to discuss the
development of the community plan and i will be there as usual, if
richard, or mike would like to hear about how we can plan for a
sustainable future for dacorum the meetings are at the civic centre
18th November Environment forum starting 7:30pm.
regards
Francois
Just to let you know we managed to raise £110 for the supper/quiz
after all the costs were taken out. We raised £48 for the raffle and
have decided to donate this to One World Week, may as well round it up
to £50. This leaves us with £60 in our bank. We'll spend it thriftly.
Every little helps.
Regards
Francois
This is a bit short notice but then i bought the stalls only this
monday. We have two stalls for the Mayor's charity fair this Saturday
6th November from 10am to 2pm.
Things is although i've got one volunteer who will be helping me
unpack the stuff for the start, i'd be grateful for some extra help
selling the stuff. Just one other person would make a big difference.
So if anybody is available and willing for saturday 6th november the
market will start from 10am finishing at 2pm. Then i'll need to pack
it all away again.
Any offers?
Regards
Francois
Our group has now been formally accepted as a full member of the
Dacorum Council for Voluntary Services. Our bank account is up and
running and we can now look for funding initiatives. We need an
official photographer for the group. And i think it would be a good
idea if we had a volunteer whose sole responsibility is handling press
and pr.
Any offers? More soon...i'm off to the watford town fairtrade town
launch to see how they get on tonight.
Catherine, i know you're busy but could you get back to me on the
supper finances so we can sort them out?
John, been thinking about your comments re: the website, i also
thought about getting a volunteer, i'll prolly ask dcvs but i was
wondering whether i had the technical knowledge or you could coach me
a bit to take over the site until someone else comes along. i'd rather
it was not a static site but an active regularly updated one.
Cheers
Francois
about 30 or so people turned up for our supper quiz, but it was a nice
intimate space and everybody had a great time. Thanks to everybody who
helped to make it a great success and for all your hard work. And to
all our guests, i hope you had a good time.
i'm going to go to bed now....zzzzzzzzzzzzz
We had a full house at the civic centre on Monday night. It was a very
successful evening and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Oxfam
foods took a respectable £140 in sales while Colin Smith provided top
class fairtrade coffee to the assembled guests. Who's going to say now
that fairtrade coffee isn't quality? ask anybody that was there that
night.
A lot of support was expressed for the campaign and the call has gone
out to the borough to link up the towns in a collective bid for
fairtrade status.
There is already a shopping directory which i shall be having printed
up and distrubuted, however, it needs updating and we shall request of
the members their local assistance in indentifying any retail branches
we've missed in the neighbouring towns.
FAIRTRADE SUPPER/QUIZ
We still have places to fill 'em up so come on all you individuals
that love a good feast, anybody that would appreciate a three course
fairtrade/ organic supper quiz for a mere £8.00 this coming saturday
23rd october at st mary's church hall hemel hempstead old high street,
please come along either as invididuals or as small groups. Even
though it's not going to be as big an event as we originally planned,
we do make the promise that it will be a lovely evening becuase we put
a lot of work into it.
At the end of it all, you can rate us on marks out of ten although i
reserve the right to insist that you can only score a minimum of five
out of ten so that at least we can have the accolade of saying it was
'just alright on the night' if not brilliant. har har!
Sorry - I was at work and only saw this about
an hour ago. However, I’ve just put out the press release below.

NEWS RELEASE
Date: 15th October 2004. Embargo: immediate
GRAYSON BACKS DACORUM FAIRTRADE GROUP
Commenting on today’s launch of the
Dacorum Fairtrade Group, Hemel’s Lib Dem PPC, Dr Richard Grayson, said:
“I am delighted to back the Dacorum Fairtrade Group.
Fair trade means giving people fair payment for their labour. That’s an
important way of spreading freedom and justice through the developing
world. Many people are enslaved by the exploitation of companies in the
developed world who pay them the minimum they can get away with, and all the
work associated with Fairtrade is a boost for some of the world's poorest
people. I very much hope that Hemel Hempstead will become a FairtradeTown."
Dr Grayson added:
“The Liberal Democrats have long argued for policies
to promote fair trade. Our recent policy paper, Wealth for the World, set out detailed policies on
international trade and was overwhelmingly backed by our party conference this
September. In particular, the Liberal Democrats have pledged ‘to encourage
initiatives such as the Ethical Trading Initiative and the Fair Trade
Foundation, which aim to increase the share of products’ purchase price
which flows back to the producers’.”
Notes to editors
For further details of Liberal Democrat policy on
international trade, see Policy Paper 64, A
World Free from Poverty, which is available on the internet at: http://www.libdems.org.uk/documents/policies/Policy_Papers/65_IntInvestment.pdf
There is a press call today outside oxfam's shop in market square
hemel hempstead, for the DACORUM FAIRTRADE GROUP LAUNCH only found out
about this yesterday and having gone to work, and gone straight to the
forum not had time to announce it to all but a few. Anybody who wants
to come and be in shot as we are all members of the group please come
along. TIME BETWEEN 13:00 AND 15:00. sorry for the late notice.
regards
Francois Henderson
Ps. if any of you prospective parliamentary candidates would like to
say something to neil puffet to add to the press coverage feel free,
i'm rushing a press pack over to him as soon as i can get out of the
door this morning before the photographers turn up.

Was contacted by Stephen Beauchamp marketing manager for csv, (see
text of message below) as they are partnered with one world week. have
registred for this event on 30th October. More publicity for us,
hurrah!
"I am writing to you from CSV Make a Difference Day, the UK's biggest
day of community action.
I'm pleased to say that One World Week has partnered up with CSV Make
a Difference Day. Therefore I would like to invite you to register
your OWW activity as a CSV Make a Difference Day event and receive
increased publicity for your event as well as a free action pack. The
pack contains a t-shirt, advice on gaining publicity, waterproof
tabards, thank you certificates, pin badges, posters, advice on
recruiting new members, and other items to help make your activity a
success. We can also promote your activity on our website if you'd
like.
In 2003 nearly 88,000 volunteers worked on over 4,500 projects,
renovating children's hospices, transforming women's refuge centres,
organising lectures regarding global issues, improving access to
community buildings for disabled people, hosting fairtrade coffee
mornings and brightening homes for older people. This year we expect
97,000 people to take part in over 5,000 activities on the 30th of
October (or between 23rd October - 6th November)."
So far we've contacted 300 groups about the up and coming events.
Members of the Women's Institute have contacted us and are coming to
the fairtrade town launch, also representatives of Hemel Hempstead
Churches Together who have now formally written to express their
support. That's another group we can add to the web page. But there's
still more to do.
Counsellor representation at the meeting is vital as it's the local
authority we are trying to persuade to pass a resolution.
Good news about the diocese annoucing fairtrade resolution. it will be
formally ratified shortly. Watford are now launching a similar
presentation with bruce crowther and simeon greene for the 1st
November at the town hall.
Was contacted yesterday by a new member wishing to be kept informed of
future events and helping out. For those members who are not on email,
we'll be needing a mailing list. A newsletter would also be a good
idea at this time as a formal launch i believe will entail regular
contact with new supporters.
Bank account for the Dacorum Fairtrade Group has now been set up, am
awaiting cheque books but deposits to the account can now be made.
We could do with a treasurer though. any volunteers out there?
Making more use of dacorum council for voluntary services would also
be a tremendous help. i've applied for membership, can't think why i
didn't do it ages ago. However we have to wait until a committee
meeting before being formally approved as a member.
Press release, many thanks to john for his assistance, is now drafted
and is about to go out. We'll try and get the co-op to help us as
well.
As to the supper/quiz, things are a bit quiet, we have the activists
team, and harrow are offering to put one together. Richard Grayson is
at work putting together his team for the lib dems, so would
appreciate now hearing from Mike Penning and Tony McWalters sec.
Catherine and Karen (Oxfam Shop volunteer) are liaising about the
catering for the supper, and i'm cramming for the quiz with liz...ha
ha that rhymes.
There'll be an opportunity for further promotion at the next
environment forum on the 14th October. Before then, there's a schools
event organised by kay volger at the apsley paper mill and i think
having some presence there would also be helpful.
What we need now is a volunteer drive. To get more members! Oh and
funding.
Further to the news about the fairtrade directory, New Consumer
Magazine are sending down an outline of the 24 page directory, and yes
business sponsorship and advertising for local groups will be
included. we need to raise £1800 (we have three months) and Smiths
Coffee, one of our sponsors has pledged £100, only £1700 to go, i'll
be asking the co-op group next. There are other companies i'll be
asking but although this sounds a lot i believe raising the money is
achievable. For this we get local directory, local company
advertising, and a 10,000 print run copy in full colour in time for
fairtrade fortnight 2005. i should add that also included are reviews
of fairtrade products, interviews with fairtrade foundation, and we
get the front cover to declare it's our local directory for Dacorum
Borough. We can also have statements from the main political party's
on it as we have on the web site.
Dear members,
does it seem quiet lately on the fairtrade front?
The fairtrade conference is on the 18th October, the fairtrade
supper/quiz is on the 23rd October.
we are going to get a 24 page full colour 10,000 copy run of a
professionally produced fairtrade directory for the whole of Dacorum.
Thanks to the new consumer magazine. However this isn't free so i'll
be raising sponsorship for it. We get 90 days as of today to raise the
money. (whistle) i'm prepared to take the challenge. Are you?
Business will benefit because they get the advertising space so we
should be able to appeal to the right people. Those wishing to get
involved with sponsorship drive to help raise the money from this
please contact me. This isn't about we dip into our pockets and pay
for it, it's about we talk to people who know people who know people
who would be able to help or benefit. Lets climb that mountain. This
is exciting stuff!
We've had an offer from Oxfam/WDM at Watford to share a coach for the
trade justice movements BIG!! campaign to be held at Brighton on
Sunday 26th Setember.
This is going to be a HUGEEEE! Demonstration on the beach at Brighton
and for all you serious activists out there it'll be sun sea sand and
daring do, we can wave our placards and shout slogans to the sound of
the roaring surf as we bewail the Labour Party conference with our
righteous indignation.
The cost is £12.50 and the coach leaves from Watford Junction station
around 9:30 am Sunday and will depart brighton at 19:00 hours.
Numbers must be confirmed this Friday so i'll take it on myself to
book five places in advance. I'm sure there are enough people
interested to to actually make the trip. (cross fingers) 'cos i'm
going to have to pay in advance.
Regards
Francois Henderson
Just to remind people that tonight we are having a meeting at the Old
Mill in Berkhamsted to plan the fairtrade supper/quiz and fairtrade
town launch.
We will also be reviewing the fairtrade town goals and objectives.
We need to nominate a quiz writing committee and choose some fairtrade
recipes for the supper.
We also need to get teams together and invite lists.
There (hopefully) might be a new member coming along tonight. She is
very interested in fairtrade and feels that our fairtrade town bid
might provide some basis for her dissertation.
There are also some other issues to discuss. Richard Grayson has
apologised for absence and Paul Sandford can't make it as he's in
Austria. i really think he could get on a plane don't you? ha ha.
Please accept my apologies for not being
able to attend this. I have been laid low with gastroenteritis and told to
take it very easy for the next few weeks. However, I certainly plan to put together
a Lib Dem team for the quiz night.

This is the letter i showed to Tony McWalter last Friday. (See files
upload; Council Resolution)
Mike Penning would like to add signatures to the existing environment
forum members and i'm sure so would Richard Grayson for the Liberal
Democrats. Or perhaps to simply add a headed letter and a few words.
My personal feeling is that this letter should be posted immediately
to Andrew Williams as the sooner the council are formally alerted to
our bid for a fairtrade town the better, however if there is time to
add extra signatures (from committe meetings) then download the whole
thing, and snail mail back the hard signatures to my address or i'll
come by and pick them up. Would seven days be a reasonable deadline
for this? or can we afford to wait until the meeting of 1st September?
I'm just wondering if we'll be giving enough time for the council to
respond bearing in mind we'd like them to attend the Fairtrade Town
Conference to find out more.
We already have 24 signatures from the Environment Forum so this would
probably be ok to start off with. Do we need the extra signatures or
is it enough that the list of supporting organisations at the footer
of the letter (which can be verified)is proof enough?
As long as all the councillors are aware of and enough of them support
it's contents when the motion is put before the cabinet at their next
meeting does it really matter?
Also with regards to the Fairtrade Supper Quiz Tony McWalter suggested
getting together a labour party team. Well that sounds great, can we
count on teams representing the liberal democrats and conservatives to
take part in this social occasion?
In any case you should all see a copy of this letter before it goes
out formally so you know what's in the pipeline. I'll take any
comments.
OOPS!!
The time of the meeting will be at 7:30pm
