Dear all,

i'm uploading a poster for the fairtrade market which pretty much
covers it all. The only logo on it is the fairtrade foundation.
Oxfam, co-op, and traidcraft get mentioned at the bottom.

I spoke to val derbyshire today who promised to send the co-op
artwork which we need to send on for the Marlowes centre to use. I've
also agreed with her that we can do a big prize draw with a fairtrade
hamper and a local paper tie in. i'm planning to get the fairtrade
stuff from co-op, who'll supply the wine, and from other
organisations such as choc-aid who do delicious champagne truffles.
fair trade ofcourse. And maybe Tropical Wholefoods can donate a range
of their wholefood fruity snack bars. traidcraft can contribue
something i'm sure.

We need i think to get together anyhow as i'm now planning to do a
regular campaign stall for fairtrade. The activists meeting for
friends of the earth was at the old mill in berkhamsted which is a
really nice place to meet, quite, classy, spacious, and lovely food
for those that want it. So i suggest we all have a get together
Monday next at 7:30pm.

Meanwhile i've yet to get together with the cafe's in the marlowes
centre, i was trying to get hold of the fairtrade foundations
approaching cafe's pack with fairtrade coasters and posters.

i'll be posting something else here within the next day or so but
look forward to any communications of yours. Please lets all keep
talking.

Regards

Francois

Hello All,

I spent some time down at Berkhamsted Farmers market this morning handing out
flyers for our Fair Trade Market on 13th March.

A lot of the traders were interested in having a stall, most said they would
have to check their diaries and would give me a ring, but I have 3 firm
bookings.

Simply herbs, who make herbal toiletries and skin care stuff.
Mrs Gorski, a Hertfordshire honey producer.
Colin Wright, who makes bird boxes, bird feeders etc.

How are we getting on with all the other stuff ?

Hello Francois/All,

Sorry I haven't replied earlier - I've had a busy week.

1. Meeting with centre manager.

I can only make evenings or weekends as I'm working in London at the moment. I
get home at about 7pm. I presume this is a bit late. Maybe the best thing is to
go ahead and plan the meeting to suit you and I'll do my best to come along. If
the meeting is at the beginning or end of the day it'd be more likely I could
come.

2. Table transport.
Cris (my husband) has a lorry as he's a builder. He's said we can have the
lorry (which I can drive) for the 13th, so it shouldn't be any problem getting
the tables.

3. Farmers Market people.
I haven't asked any yet, but now that you've confirmed the date I'll give a few
a ring. If we've still got stalls free by mid Feb then I'll walk round St
Albans and Berkhamsted Farmers markets and ask those stall holders.

4. Would it be good if we had one stall for Green type leaflets and
information? Especially those related to looking after our farmers and country
side. Also GM issue etc ? I'm speaking to FARM on Monday (www.farm.org.uk)
I'll ask them for suggestions.

Thanks for all your hard work Francois.

Dear Francois,

Due to very bad weather conditions on 28/01/04 the green party

The next Meeting will be on the Monday 8th of March at 8pm, would it

i can now confirm that we have the go ahead in writing from the
Marlowes Centre and that the NORTH COURT promotional area opposite
Littlewoods is booked.

i'm arranging a meeting, which the marlowes centre Management have
confirmed as being on THURSDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2PM.

Can you all please confirm your availability?

val from the co-op will be coming, catherine turner i hope for
traidcraft, marion for foe and real foods campaign, myself for oxfam,
and who did i miss out? lets' all have a party.

There's a possibility that the market can now be extended to include
the vacant shop unit adjacent littlewoods. if it is still vacant by
the time we hold it, we can open it up and use it to make an EVEN
BIGGER MARKET!!

i'll be away until sunday evening so hope to hear from you all by
then.

Formally written to the Centre Manager to cofirm the hire of the
space. We now need to meet up and discuss the setup. The Dacorum
Voluntary Service has reserved 12 Aluminium 6ft by 3ft tables which
they have told me we can have for the weekend for as little as £48
provided i get the Oxfam Shop to independantly join into the
community scheme. Which is in their interests actually.

TRANSPORTING THE STALLS TO THE SITE

i've been advised there is a man who has helped the charity fairs in
the past by making his marlowes centre van available, but barring
that, whose got a van or know where we can get one cheap? I suppose
we can pack the goods in our own cars for a saturday.
We'll have to get those passes as well so we can get into the
shopping centre area space.

Catherine traidcraft clothing co-ordinator? sounds great i think the
fair trade market can have a little variety. Could you come to a
meeting to discuss the planning? Or I might be able to see the Centre
manager to agree on the stall sizes. All i'm going to need is a floor
plan and plot the stall modules and then it's down to how we fill
them up. I'll get copies of the plans and distribute them with fire
exit clearances and stuff marked up.

Val can come along for a meeting to discuss things from next
wednesday i've been informed.

Marion how are you getting on approaching the farmers market
producers?

I'm wondering whether to give Cafedirect a call about approaching the
adjacent cafe's for taking part in the day by offering sample fair
trade coffees and teas.

That's all for now i'll give you all a call to see about the who
where when we can meet to get this show on the road.

I've formally written to the Centre Manager to confirm the hire of
the space opposite Littlewoods for Saturday 13th March.

The Dacorum Voluntary Service can offer 6ft by 3ft aluminium tables,
a total of 12 for the event so i've booked these. I'm told it could
be as little as £48 for the lot for the weekend. We'll need transport
though, we might be able to get some help from the Marlowes Centre
though as there is a fellow who has helped charities in the past with
a marlowes centre van. That would be good.

I'd now like to formalise a meeting and this will have to be from
wednesday of next week at the earliest. Marion, i know you'd like to
come what sort of time would you be available? Not sure what times
the centre manager will be available either at the moment.

Catherine i know you'd like to attend, if we had a daytime meeting
could you attend? and clothing range from traidcraft sounds great. i
was thinking of including a traidcraft stall anyway. If we sell more
than just food i don't mind opening up the paramaters a bit.

Dear Val,

Alison Donovan forwarded me to you as you will be
taking onboard the herts area for co-op affairs.

We had been discussing co-op provision and assistance
for a fair trade market to be held at Hemel Hempstead
Marlowes Shopping Centre for the last day of Fairtrade
Fortnight 13th March. This would be foods.

The Centre Manager quoted me for £100 for a large
space opposite Littlewoods and with four stall holders
minimum this would be £25 each. i'm hoping for the
Co-op to be there and i'll sort out Oxfam, possibly
Traidcraft, local farm producers organic or farmers
market approved traders. Alison said that for such a
sum the co-op might approve the whole sum of £100 for
the hire of the space.

i now need to set up a meeting with the centre manager
as soon as possible. In any case i'm phoning him this
afternoon to say we are going ahead so he can sort out
early publicity.

I may try to meet with him provisionally and get a
floor plan and sketch some details of stall sizes,
layout and general ideas.

I know you don't officially take up your post until
the 3rd February but can you let me know if you are
available for a meeting before then? Perhaps sometime
towards the end of next week?

The easiest way to notify all the parties in advance
is to post to our yahoo group DacFT@...
that way everyone gets the email at the same time and
we can then post a meeting on the yahoo calender
online.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Francois Henderson

i rang the Marlowes Centre Manager today to make enquiries about a
fair trade market opposite Littlewoods.

Vince (centre manager) explained that the cost of renting the space
besides Littlewoods is £900 a week. However, we wont be renting for a
week more like a day, and if four of us take stalls each and hire it
as one organisation, Namely the Dacorum Fairtrade Action group
comprising the CO-OP, FRIENDS OF THE EARTH, OXFAM, CHRISTAIN AID, not
to mention a contribution from the FAIRTRADE FOUNDATION FOR A
CAMPAIGN AND INFORMATION RESCOURCES STALL Then we could do it at i
estimate based on prices for a day and divined by four probably £45
each. i'd Like to ask BUDGENS as well as they do a great range of
fairtrade and organic real food and organic produce, they might even
sponsor the cost of the foe real food campaign stall if we swing it
right. Then we can ask CHRISTAIN AID to sponsor a stall for the
CHURCHES and TRAIDCRAFT. the more the merrier which leaves only the
question of stall sizes to work out plus a few niggly little details.

We can get GREAT PUBLICITY FOR THIS!!! and it would be worth it to
plug it for fairtrade fornight just before Easter, and to mark the
10TH anniversary of fairtrade foundation. We can also really swing
the Fairtrade Town into action.

Lets hope we can get a reasonable quote from the centre manager and
some groovy funding from the co-op, foe, oxfam, budgens, church,
whoever.

Marion,

you can do farmers market stalls if you sell at the same place as me.
The Dacorum Sports Centre. you're not in hemel at the moment, but if
you can do a Saturday for foe real food it would be great. you're
indoors so it's nice and warm, there's a canteen just nearby so you
can get hot food and drink and together we can cover fair trade and
real food. How about it?

newsworthy stuff and something we could capitalize on assuming any
schools in dacorum taking part might like to know we are seeking fair
trade status for dacorum. Co-ordinated news realeases is what i have

Thanks i had a nice christmas and wishing you also a
happy new year ahead.

yes i'll be coming along. Is this going to be a more
informal occasion than the main presentation to the
environment forum? i'll outline the principles upon
which the submission to lobby the council for fair
trade is based under current agenda 21 principles and
some examples of other towns and cities that have

i had to cancel the stall at the sports centre foyer pretty much on
the advice of the sports manager as she said the sports centre is a
bit of a ghost town at the moment and she didn't think it was worth
our running it. She's confident the place will be heaving by the
middle of january. We could advertise our stall in advance as well
with some posters, maybe even chivvy in a little advert with the
local paper. This then can be the wind up to fairtrade fortnight as
the first of many events leading up to the big day.

Marion,

I will try and join you at the farmers market in Berko on Sunday 18th
January. I have just recieved a load of Green Party
leaflets/pamphlets covering local food and GMO's, so you could add
them to the stall.

Hi Francois,

The farmers market in Berko is once a month, so I thought I'd do the one on Sunday 18th January. I would love a hand if you're free that day. I'll have to get used to the prices and stuff. I'll also have to find a table from somewhere. If we're selling fair trade theres no reason why we can't also have FoE and Green Party leaflets is there ?  I mean there isn't any conflict of interests ?  I presume as it's my stall I can do anything !!!!!

I'll also have to check with the Farmers Market people that fair trade is OK. Farmers Markets tend to sell locally produced stuff, and fair trade isn't exactly locally produced !  I'm sure it fits in with the Farmers Market ethic though.

On the 18th Dec I could join you for my lunch time again. I don't have any leave left, so can't help for any longer than that. But I enjoyed it last time. I'll write it in the diary.

Regards
Marion

Dear marion,

that sounds great, sure i can send you all sorts of stuff. Pity you
missed the fair trade display i had at the library, but i've got lots
more.

if you want a helping hand with the stall, i'd be glad to offer my
services. i can supply fairtrade foods ofcourse but i've got loads of
campaign leaflets and stuff about fairtrade. When would you be doing
your first one? I'm doing another sports centre fair trade stall on
the 18th december from 10:00 to 14:00.

Hello All,

I've just had a thought.

I really fancy doing a regular farmers market stall (probably Berko). I was thinking we/I could sell free trade goods (like Francois was at the Dacorum leisure centre the other day). If all went well we could branch out to recycled goods and any other ethical stuff we can think of (real nappies, a bit of organic stuff maybe).
At the same time we/I could have Fair Trade, FoE and Green Party leaflets to hand out.

Does anyone else fancy doing this ?  I wouldn't expect any commitment, but Francois would you be able to supply me with Fair Trade stuff to start with ?

Regards
Marion

i've established contact with the regional co-op office in Milton
Keynes and spoke to alison donovan who is co-op affairs officer. She
is willing to come and attend steering group meetings for the time
being as a new post has created nearer to our area and an appointee
is yet to be found.

By the way it only costs £1 to become a member of the co-op and since
fair trade is founded on co-operative principles and anyway i think
the co-op is such a worthy cause what say we all send in our £1. This
is being a member not joining the co-operative political party which
is a seperate thing.

We need to start thinking about our first steering group meeting,
time and place soon.

Exciting this isn't it?

Regards

Francois

I'm setting up a library display on Fairtrade on 1st December. It'll
be up for a week. i got the rescources from fairtrade foundation,
cafedirect, and Day chocolate company. It's going to be a modest
display but i'll probably do another nearer to fairtrade fortnight.
These library displays don't cost anything apart from £1 insurance.
So it's worth doing.

Although the environment forum presentation will hopefully yield us
many more members, we can start with the setup of the steering group
now.

The draft constitution posted to the files section lists the
objectives of the fairtrade town group. We're going to need a
treasurer, hmmm eventually.

However what we do need is to arrange a meeting between the
signatories so that we can all officially sign the paper document
which then ratifies the group legally. For this i'm going to have to
get representatives from each of the named groups to meet at an
appointed time and place.

As new people come along we can either add them to the committee or
jot their name down as supporters. I'll come up with a few dates for
meeting and talk to everyone.

Er.. don't worry paul you won't be alone for much longer
