     Now, two monthly Urdu magazines,two daily Urdu newspapers and
three Urdu weekly papers are publshed regularly and available at the
book stalls for hundeds and thousands of people who live and work in
this country,KSA,Qatar,Bahrain,Kuwait,Oman etc.
     We are now focussing more on special and interesting Urdu
programs for the young people so that interest may be created for
learning this beautiful language by the present as well as by the
future generations.
     Hameeda Chopra Sahiba and all the Urdu loving people who have
organised the above noted function in California ( Ca ) deserve all
the appreciation.Well done and please keep it up.

Markets around Darbar Sahib

The Harmandar Sahib housed numerous markets around its periphery. These markets were known for offering quality goods. These bazaars were completely dependent on the Sikh shrine for their business.

The bazaars, which earned popularity during those times, were Jhootha Bazaar, Kathiya Bazaar and Mai Sewan Bazaar.

One of the markets came to be known as the Jhootha Bazaar because it was believed that everything else was materialistic and hence ephemeral, the real beauty was �Sachkhand� � Golden Temple.

The Jhootha Bazaar started in the sixteenth century and had a very narrow lane.

Another famous bazaar was the Kathiya Wala Bazaar, which was located in the backdrop of Akal Takht.

The market was started in 1620 just after Guru Hargobind Singh had passed an edict (hukumnama) to bring horses and weapons as offerings.

The Mai Sewan Bazaar started early in Ranjit Singh�s period.

It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who dedicated this bazaar to a lady named Mai Sewan, who very sincerely did �seva�, which means service, in Harmandar Sahib. She was the wife of a military commander Fateh Singh Kaaliawaala.

The area of the Mai Sewan Bazaar was 400 square feet.

The Jhootha Bazaar was popular among women for embroidery, lace work, Punjabi jutis, artificial jewellery, whereas the Khatiya Bazaar sold leather goods.

The Mai Sewan Bazaar had shops of drafting material. It used to have four printing presses, sweets shops and bookshops.

The Mai Sewan Bazaar even had a Haathi Khaana where Maharaja Ranjit Singh used to keep his elephant during his visit to the Golden Temple.

Today the markets that exist, though not with the same flourish, are the Mai Sewan Bazaar and the Kathiya Wala Bazaar. In fact, these markets �exist more in name� in the sense that the old name has been retained, but the markets have registered numerous changes.

The Mai Sewan Wala Bazaar has Udasin Akhaara, Sangal Wala Akhara started by Guru Nanak�s son Sri Chand, and its present head is Mahant Ananta Nand. One can still visit Darshani Deodhi Gurdwara.

The residence of the Mahant of the Golden Temple, which was given by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, got demolished some years ago.

With it was also lost the building that had an archaeological value. Now an NRI serai is being constructed at that place.

The Kathiya Wala Bazaar has become the market of paints, sanitary fittings and hardware goods.

greater interest among the young people to read,write
and speak Urdu as well as other languages AND, the business
community/businessmen,senior professionals support the same
or be ready to sponsor such important events.

Of vanishing tribe of folk singers

The number of visitors to the annual Chhapar Mela in this district may be increasing every year, but the traditional folk singers, who used to entertain the visitors there, seem to be vanishing. So are the listeners who would sit through the nights to listen to them. The melodious voice of the folk singers seems to have been lost in the din of conferences at the mela. The mela is considered to be one of the important cultural festivals of Punjab. Old timers, like Karam Singh Dhillon of Detwal village recall that the mela would spread to hundreds of acres of the vacant land about four decades ago. Since the paddy was not grown during those days in Punjab, there was abundant land available. People would sit over sand dunes under the moonlight to listen to the traditional folk singers. Mr Dhillon said there would be scores of folk singers surrounded by a big audience. This remained to be the prime attraction at the mela. However, with the passage of time, the space for the mela had shrunk as people started growing paddy. As if that was not enough, the political parties had further added to the space problems as most of those set up their stages to address for conferences. Besides, there was no restriction on the number of loudspeakers the parties install, thus adding to the chaos and confusion, Mr Dhillon said. The folk singers also regret the loss of cool atmosphere of the mela. They would not use any mikes or loudspeakers. They did not use it even now. However, their voice got lost in the sound of loudspeakers. Now, they searched for the isolated corners to hold their shows. One such group was performing at the nearby crematorium. However, very few diehard admirers listen to them, he added. The singers said every year the number of folk singers coming to the mela was declining. So was the number of listeners. They said, the time was not that far when there would be no traditional folk singers singing the songs at a major cultural festival. They suggested that the government must earmark a particular space for them at the mela.

Hidden Heritage : A Google Earth view of Punjab

IN the last few weeks, Google Earth has updated its maps of Punjab. These have included higher defintion images of some of the main centres including Chandigarh, Patiala, Amritsar and Lahore. For the first time, some of Punjabs most important sites of built heritage are now visible from the air and them make remarkable viewing. In the second part of the "Hidden Heritage" series we look at some of the more recognisable sites accompanied with pictures from the ground.

One of the most recognisable heritage sites in East Punjab, the Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar. The sarovar, parkarma and the Akal Takht are all clearly visible.

The original "Guru-ka-bagh" from where the building of the Darbar Sahib was supervised by Guru Arjan Dev ji is visible as a bifucated green rectangle almost in the centre of the pcicture. The rectagluar sarovar of the Baba Atal Burj is visible in the bottom left of the picture.

The Darbar Sahib remains is the very centre of the old city of Amritsar. Whilst the old city walls have been demolished and the city gates are all but destroyed, the perimeter of the medeivel city is evident in the view from Google Earth.

(the very similar, but smaller, structure in the top of the frame is the Hindu Durgiana Tenmple, that was built in the 1920s on the same plan as the Harimandir Sahib). The old city is bound by roads giving it an almost kidney shape. The map of 1869 below from the Royal Geographical Society serves as a comparison:

Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who was instrumental in reguilding the Darbar Sahib and gicing it the appelation; the Golden Temple was someone who left his indelible mark on the Punjab in many differnet ways. Probably the most telling are the Hazuri Bagh and his own Samadhi in Lahore. The views of these monuments form the air speak volumes about Ranjit Singh's reign. The Hazuri Bagh is a modest marble pavillion, richly decorated and placed in the bagh between the austere and enourmous Badshahi Masjid and Akbar's (and later Ranjit Singh's) Lahore Fortress. The scale of the pavillion and its placement in the public area illustrate Ranjit Singh's humility and his openess.

Aurangzeb's Badshahi Masjib viewed from the sky, the enourmous red square is the prayer hall. Opposite this is the Hazuri bagh, with Ranjit Singh's marble pavillion in it's very centre. Top the right is the almost square Lahore fort complex which forms one side of the old city walls. Ranjit Singh's samadh and Dehra Sahib gurdwara are just to the top of the hazuri Bagh (see the zoomed view below)

	The marble pavillion built by Ranjit Singh in the centre of Hazuri Bagh. This was once used as a plae of public darbar. The entrance to Lahore fort is in the background.

Just outside the old city of Lahore is another area of great importance to Punjab's heritage; Shalimar gardens. These gardens were originally laid by the Mughals and were amongst the most fabulous of the formal Mughal gardens in South Asia.

East Punjab may suffer a dearth of Sikh heritage relating to Ranjit Singh but it does contain one of the most important Sikh forts, and this is intact in structure. The Qila Mubarak which was originally built in eth 1700s and has been expanded as late as the turn of the 20th century is amply evident from the air on Google Earth.

The Qila Mubarak was first developed as a mud fort or Kachi Garhi. Baba Ala Singh constructed the Pacca Qila after his conquest of Sirhind. From the receipts of the octroi on the merchandise passing through his territory of the G.T. road, he constructed the Qila. The present Qila is divided into two parts- one, the Qila Androon, the interior portion, was built by Ala Singh. Situated on a mound, it ascends as one moves into it. While the other i.e., between the Qila Androon and outer walls with the secretariat on the left and Darbar Hall on the right, was built by Maharaja Karam Singh. The Darbar Hall is now converted into a mini museum where rare arms and armours including a sword of Nadir Shah known as 'Shikar Gah' are on display. Most precious pieces of art are the rich collection of tree-like chandeliers made of Bohemian cut-glass emitting prism like radiant splendour and sheen. To those interested in metallurgy and guns, a visit to the Cannon Park within the premises of the Qila Mubarak would certainly be a thrilling experience of life time. The murals inside the palaces are rare specimen of the Kangra and Rajasthan paintings

three years ago when nearly one million armed
men with latest arms and war equipment came
on the borders and remained there for nearly
one year doing what ? "ALLAH KNOWS" but,
certainly it must have caused billions of
rupees expenditure which could have been
better spent to improve the condition of
millions and millions of very very poor,sick
and shelterless people or the very poor
students crying,weeping,shouting for fee
and text books.

    I have been writing since the year 2000
on the above important subject because, I FEEL
THAT IF THE PRESENT OLD "BUDDHA BA BA's" /
LEADERS FAIL TO RESOLVE THE VERY VERY DISPUTES
NOW (2006) then,the future leaders may find it
more difficult.
    As the time is passing,things are
becoming more complicated.Therefore,before it is
too late,let them do something positive/good to
resolve all the issues permanently,peacefully as
per desire of Kashmiris,Pakistanis,Indians.
    The people of Pakistan and India have developed
very good friendship.They want to retain these
excellent relations and therefore,the leaders must
bring the PEACE here as well as in all parts of
the World NOW and NOT "LATER".The people will
welcome all the good/practical moves/actions NOT
talks only or in Bengali, we call it "katha"
(baatain faqat/qissai/kahaniaan/daastanain faqat).
    I would like to request the Senior journalists,
writers,poets,media experts etc. to please read
this letter twice and write your views so that the
leaders may realise the IMPORTANCE of having PEACE
on PERMANENT BASIS in this region as well as in all
the countries of the world.
    LET US HOPE THAT THE REMAINING PART OF THIS

South Asia cannot be achieved without a just solution of the Kashmir

while talking to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Raja
Zulqarnain Haider who called on him here at the PM House.
Emphasising the need for an early settlement of the Kashmir dispute,
the prime minister said that time has come for Pakistan and India to
move from the extended phase of dispute management to dispute
resolution in view of the fact that this festering dispute has
bedevilled the relations between Pakistan and India for over 50
years. The Prime Minister said Pakistan is a peaceful country and
wants a peaceful settlement of the dispute. Pakistan has
scrupulously avoided
>  entering the arms race and has instead adopted policy of minimum
credible deterrence to ensure peace in the region, he added. The
Prime Minister said Pakistan is firmly of the view that the wishes
and aspirations of the Kashmiri people must be reflected in any
settlement to ensure its acceptance by them and to herald an era of
peace in South Asia. Raja Zulqarnain Haider told the Prime Minister
that the people of Kashmir appreciate the consistent support given
by the people and government of Pakistan to the cause of
Kashmir. "We also remain beholden to the people of Pakistan, the
government and Pakistan army for their unforgettable moral and
material support so generously given to the people of Kashmir when
they were struck by a catastrophic earthquake last October", he
said.Later Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, in his capacity as Chairman
of the AJK Council, administered the oath of three Advisors Iftikhar
Ahmed, Sardar Naseem Ahmed and Farooq Sikandar. He also administered
>  oath of two councillors Pervaiz Akhtar and Ghulam Raza Shah
Naqvi. While addressing the members of the council, the prime
minister said that Pakistan will continue to provide full moral,
political and diplomatic support to the Kashmir cause and continue
to highlight it at all international fora. The prime minister urged
the newly elected Advisors and councillors to make all out efforts
for realising AJK's potential particularly in the fields of hydel
power, minerals and tourism development. He emphasised the need to
impart need-based skills to the people of AJK to allow them to
contribute to the economy of their area in addition to bringing
about an increase in the economic activity. He also said that
efforts should be made to encourage the local handicrafts industry
and Small and Medium Enterprises in the area. The meeting was also
attended by President AJK Raja Zulqarnain Haider, AJK Prime Minister
Sardar Ateeq, Federal Minister for Education Javed Ashraf Qazi,
Federal

Read this story written by Late Navtej Singh in Preetlarhi of this month and could not stop myself from translating it.

This was written around the 1971 war time.

�..Without Brothers��

(Punjabi short story by Navtej Singh written in 1972)

He was standing there�perplexed!

His sons, daughters, daughters in law, wife and his neighbourers�all were there.

Now, he was neither chained nor was he wearing that striped uniform.

He was wearing the same grey �chadra� and brown shirt which he had worn that night, nine months ago.

Nine months ago, one night, while watering his fields; he had heard a unique melodious voice�singing those favorite verses from Heer Waris.

Gripped in an unknown state of mind, he had just proceeded in the direction of that voice.

It was a half moon-lit night�as if he was floating in a dream-like state, with his dear friend singing ��the same couplets of Heer,somewhere far off.

�But how can he be here? He was murdered during the partition riots. He was all alone and was his best friend. He had that melodious voice which bound the two friends in a unique bond which synchronized their spirits and rather than going back from that serpentine line, he had actually crossed to the other side!

The serpentine line of partition was just next to the boundary of his village, but he had never even looked towards this side.

And during those dreadful days, his friend was dragged away by the rioters and shot dead��.but from where was this voice coming from??

It was definitely him�nobody in the whole world could sing Heer like him�.it was him, his dear friend�yes!

If it was not his �body�, then definitely it was his spirit.

Yes, it was his spirit!

It was definitely his spirit!

My dear friend�s spirit!

And he kept walking in the direction of the voice! He reached the last bit of his village land, but tonight, he did not see the serpentine line next to the village boundary, which was drawn there exactly twenty four years and few months ago.

He approached the garden which belonged to the next village (on the other side).It was the same garden where they used to gather so often and his friend used to sing through out night.

Even now, it seemed there was a similar gathering in the garden and someone was singing verses of Waris��.

What kind of miracle was this?......as if his friend�s voice had entered the throat of this singer!

He just wanted to stop there for a while and listen to the miraculous voice. All of a sudden, he was reminded of the serpent line, which had made him a �foreigner� for the same garden where they used to sit and listen to his friend�s songs throughout night.

He thought that he will only listen for a while and then quietly slip back into his territory.

He did not want to get bitten by the serpent-line��..

�Who are you?��.suddenly he found himself surrounded by some people and they were soon joined by few policemen from the nearby post.

That voice had gone silent now. It had been bitten by the serpent line.

The policemen tied a cloth on his eyes and made him sit in a jeep.

The jeep was roaring towards its destination ��.�spy� �spy��..as if the jeep was filled with a pungent smell!

He somehow sensed that the jeep was going in the same direction where his in-law�s village was.

Thirty years ago, he had traveled on the same road with �sehra� on his head. That time also, he was accompanied by his best friend, who had kept singing the whole distance��..he still remembered the songs and verses of Heer��His friend would tease him also every now and then�.would create �boliyaaN� about his sister in law��and then he had told his friend,� I won�t let you remain unmarried as well, I will start searching for my sister in law soon.�

At that moment, he had this strong desire that if policemen open his blinder for a while, then he could see that way again. He wanted to see whether things had changed after the partition��were the birds and trees same or different!........what kind of clothes the people wore!

Things might have improved, as they had on his side��.only his friend was not alive�..and that serpent line had been drawn.

He wanted to remove the cloth from around his eyes, but he was hand-cuffed and the blinder was not sliding down a bit��..and he was being taken on the same road on which he had traveled thirty years ago, with �sehra� on his head and was accompanied by his best friend, who sang throughout the way��.his favorite verses form Heer.

He was without any cloth on his body.

It was mid December.

Beneath his back, was a cube of ice.

�Why are you on this side without a passport?�

�What is that, sir�

�don�t try to be so innocent�.boys, give him some taste of our ��

And the boys started caning his bare body.

�now tell us, who sent you for spying just three days before the war? We will skin you alive if you don�t tell us the truth.�

They raised him from the ice cube and gave him the lungi to wrap around himself.

�Nobody has sent me�.I am not a spy. I was watering my fields when I heard a unique voice from this side�

�Whose voice?�

�Singing voice�.as if my friend was singing�

�What rubbish�.what song�.who is your friend?......must be some smuggler!�

� No sir, he was killed by rioters during partition, but that night, I heard exactly the same voice from this side.�

�Make this son of a bitch lie on ice again��.I have set many notorious dacoits right, what is he??.....boys, show your skills again!�

And the boys again started beating his naked body with sticks.

This was some other place . Now, he was face to face with not a policeman, but an army officer.

�You can not fool us by acting as a mad person�..we won�t keep you alive�tell us exactly how far is the army from your village and where? �how many tanks do they have and where are the bunkers near your fields?�

�I don�t anything sahib, there is nothing ��..and what is a bunker?�

�You are still talking in the same silly style�its not police which could be fooled by your antics�..this is army, and we will shoot you�

�My friend was snatched from my hands and shot in front of me�..I could do nothing. Even the earth did not engulf me at that time��how melodiously he used to sing�..believe me, I am half dead since that day�..and I came to this side when I heard his voice. No sahib, nobody has sent me and I am not a spy�..I am his friend�

� You son of a bitch, you did not die at that time�..we will kill you now�we are sick of your story now��you say that you just followed his voice��how dumb is your country�can�t even train their spies in making plausible excuses! Even your looks and attire was not changed by those silly people!�

And then the officer started explaining to his subordinates,� we are so expert in this business�.when we send our spies on that side, they are so disguised that they can mingle with the local population very easily��..and they are taught to make believable stories�.we are not dumb like them�.dumb and cowards!�

When he could not give them any more information, the officer ordered the jawans to give him electric shocks.

Jawans went outside, and the officer kept smoking while standing there.

He remembered that he had got electricity connection in his house after a lot of running around, and he had even not enjoyed its dazzling light to his heart fill, when he crossed over to this side, following his friend�s voice. And what were these electric shocks?

A jawan returned with an instrument. They connected the instrument�s wires to a small box fitted on the wall, and then they started touching those bare wires with his body��he cried and cried!! The electric current shook his limbs violently and he was almost unconscious. He remembered how, a calf had died in front of his eyes when it was hit by a lightening.

Now he was in their prison. On some days, he was not given even a drop of water, while on other days, he would be made to lie under a tap and drink water till his belly distended to its limit. He would be kept fasting day-night and would not be allowed to sleep for nights together. Light in his cell would always be kept on. He would be taken to face one or the other officer who would keep asking the same questions, �why did you come to this side, who had sent you and where were your troupes��and the tanks and bunkers�?�

Many inmates of the prison were nice to him, but others would consider him mad and made fun of him. There was one of these prisoners, who was very kind towards him. He was told by the inmates that this particular prisoner was a famous poet, who had written many poems against the government. He was a rebel and because of his writings, the government had imprisoned him along with dacoits, murderers ,thieves, rapists, pick-pockets and gamblers.

The poet had recited some of his rebellious verses for him. Many times, the poet had applied balm on his sores, and had wept when he saw the wounds given by the interrogators. During such moments, the poet would appear like his friend who was killed in front of his eyes, and whose voice had brought him here. Sometimes the poet would sing Heer , and at such times, he would confuse the poet with Waris Shah. He had never seen any picture of Waris, but he would imagine that Waris must be like the poet .

Then, he was told by one of the fellow prisoners one day that there was ceasefire.

�Does this mean that my fiend will come back?�

Some of the inmates again made fun of him and called him mad�..

The rebel poet scolded all of them and took him away from those prisoners. They kept sitting under a tree for long time��just two of them.

He started crying and then he addressed the poet,� you are the same�.my friend. You have come back and have escaped bullets�.as there has been ceasefire now�.tell me there will be no firing now�.they won�t beat me with sticks�.won�t make me lie on ice �..no electric shocks!��.and he lost consciousness in the lap of the poet.

One day, he heard that there was an agreement between the two countries.

After few months, he was left by the policemen, on the other side of the serpent line.

He was standing there�.perplexed�.his sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, sons in law, his wife, villagers-all were standing in front of him, but his best friend with unique melodious voice and that rebel poet were nowhere to be seen.

In a major policy shift, Pakistan has said visas will be given to Indians on arrival and citizens of 23 other countries.

The visa on arrival (VOA) scheme was announced by Pakistan�s Minister for Tourism Nilofar Bakhtiar after receiving Pakistani passengers from New Delhi at Wagha Border today.

Ms Bhakhtiar said the scheme, which was recently approved, would be implemented in two months, she was quoted by state-run APP news agency from Lahore. The scheme was aimed at making Pakistan a tourist-friendly destination, she said.

She said the VOA period had also been extended from five to 15 days while visit visa would now be of one-month duration instead of 15 days.

A group of at least five persons sent by approved tour operator of the respective country would have the right to get VOA, she said responding to another query.

�Today is the World Tourism Day and I am receiving passengers at Wagha to convey a massage to our neighbouring country that Pakistan always adheres to friendship, fraternity, and peace,� she said.

The people-to-people contact between Pakistan and India would guarantee improved bilateral relations, the minister added. � PTI

As students from Pakistan and India held animated discussions and workshops through the day at the Dev Samaj College of Education, the atmosphere remained charged with rhetoric.

But by the evening, interactions had turned into friendships and for every participant peace between the two nations was an achievable end.

�The key word is people-to-people contact,� pointed out Pramod Kumar, coordinator, Yuvsatta, the local Ngo which had in collaboration with the Youth Pakistan, an NGO there,organised the IndoPak peace camp that began yesterday.

Irum Naz from Toba Tek Singh, Islamabad, is a graduate in political science with journalism.

�The youth of both nations can play a very positive role in improving relationships between the two nations,� she said. Fourteen-old Karishma from Pakistan is a student of class 8 and wants to become doctor.

�I am living with an Indian family.

I like the way girls are treated here. Girls here have much liberty than girls there.

We are not allowed to ride bicycles or Western clothes,� she said.

Twenty-year-old Tariq Ismail, doing B.Sc in biotechnology in Quetta, said, �I am thrilled to be here.

I am living with an Indian family and enjoying every minute of my visit.�

In the session on �Education for Peace� Mr. Hushang Garmroud, Education Consultant gave a speech on peace.

According to him, peace should begin from homes. �First we have to change ourselves, only then can we expect a change from others. Correct guidance and teaching is also a must. We need co- operation, not competition, he said.

Earlier in the day a session on �Universal Peace� was conducted by Prof. Anil Sarwal, head, Department of English, DAV College. The entire group went to watch Dasehra celebrations yesterday and enjoyed the festive spirit.

tabdeel hua BY great sacrifices of Muslims who became Shaheed
DURING PAKISTAN MOVEMENT and the Pakistan Movement Workers
(Tehreek e Pakistan Karkuns , who had survived the Mazalim ,
were injured several times,the Qoum kai Khadims never tried to
find out their conditions/any kind of appreciation etc.
Dear Syed Faiz Ali, Piyarai Bhai ! The reason is SIMPLE
because,many "elected namoona leaders" thought that , it is
'free for all',just mint money while in power,make it as quickly
as possible by all sort of corrupt practices,run away and then
come back with different slogans / different 'caps' because,for
over fifty years,the Qoum is very much 'made' conversant with
raising all sort of hollow slogans while,the problems of poor,
needy,shelterless,sick people,ladies,students mostly remain
unsolved.
I refer to the last paragraph of your letter.Please let all
the readers/friends know if,you would like the same "old faces"
to 'return back' into the Pakistani National Assembly etc.make
the mess again,play with desks for years in the National and
Provincial Assemblies etc. involve again in all kinds of corrupt
practices (ref. court cases,democratically elected leaders
statements in print and electronic media locally,internationally)
gherao,jalao,hartal,phayya jam,country ko backward banao takeh
SIRF gora sahib walai Des aur parosi waghera hi TARAQQI ker
sakain.Shame.,stop all the mega projects and
the wonderful progress in all sectors which Pervez Musharraf,
Shaukat Aziz,Pakistanis and Overseas Pakistanis are carrying
out with Great Dedication,Natinal Interest so that,the present
and the "FURURE PAKISTANI GENERATIONS ?" (Unfortunately, many
young boys and girls are not aware properly/fully about as to
what sacrifices their elders and leaders , karkuns/children
made during the most difficult days (Pakistan Movement) in the
History of Muslims so as to achieve the most important,most
powerful Islamic Country PAKISTAN), may enjoy safety,security,
roti,kapra,makan,ta'aleem etc. in proper and suitable/practical
democratic way NOT in the old fashioned way of many 'typical
professional NAMOONA politicians' who used to try to keep the QOUM
busy in raising useless,hollow namoona na'arai ,
slogans,hartals,school bund,ports, airports, daftar,hospitals
bund,LEADERI CHAMKAO , sirf paisa banao aur , jub 'mood' main
aaieay,to phootlo bahar.WAH , WAH eisa lagta hai keh Aap PAAN
khakai,International Mushairai main daad dai rahai hain ya, khoob
daad hasil ker rahai hain.

memoir "In the Line of Fire" is informative. It is also, mostly, in
self-praise. As is normal with such memoirs, He has missed no
opportunity to malign his adversaries. Wahab mentioned some of them,
but left out a name that Musharraf seems to nurse some special
grudge against � that of Lt. Gen. Ali Quli Khan. Ali Quli finds
mention at several place in the book. Musharraf called him a
mediocre officer, leaving many to wonder how a "mediocre officer"
managed to rise through the ranks to become a lieutenant general who
was once tipped to become army chief.

Growing up in East Punjab in a transplanted family, I would
always be inquiring "what is India or Pakistan" only to be
informed that there was a line at the River (border) and the
explanations went on and on.....

That was when I was five or six.

Growing up a Sikh boy, I was teased, harassed and bullied due
to my mini-turban. A muslim boy would fare better in Pakistan,
I thought. I was envious.

So after migrating to the west, I was able to see India and
Pakistan as an outsider. Dawn and Tribune-India became more
meaningfull.

Looking at petty-theft, small-time crime, accidents, fighting,
political coruption, wars, etc. and basically bad (and good)
life on either side, I would have to rely on different page
layouts to see whether it was India or Pakistan.

Now in my forties, I ask "what is India or Pakistan" ?

Just replying to Syed Saghier Jafri-

Manmohan Singh is an eminent economist, a well known one who is a mild tempered, able, hard working man. Yet one often wonders whether someone would be a more able PM.

On the other hand, Musharraf is definitely an effective President- he has unabashedly written a book which is quite clearly an eyewash, yet he defends it vociferously and even promotes it. He's a crafty old fellow which does not make him a man of peace.

This is not about India or Pakistan- Indian leaders have made many mistakes- In Sri Lanka, In Punjab, in 1984 at the time of Indira Gandhi's death, in the North east, we continue to ignore what is going on there. But Yes, to call Musharraf a man of peace seems a bit far fetched!!!!!!!!!!!

As for how to have peace, how about talking less, doing more, and being sincere. That's a tough call for a politician though.

always be inquiring "what is India or Pakistan" only to be
informed that there was a line at the River (border) and the
explanations went on and on.....

That was when I was five or six.

Growing up a Sikh boy, I was teased, harassed and bullied due
to my mini-turban. A muslim boy would fare better in Pakistan,
I thought. I was envious.

So after migrating to the west, I was able to see India and
Pakistan as an outsider. Dawn and Tribune-India became more
meaningfull.

Looking at petty-theft, small-time crime, accidents, fighting,
political coruption, wars, etc. and basically bad (and good)
life on either side, I would have to rely on different page
layouts to see whether it was India or Pakistan.

Now in my forties, I ask "what is India or Pakistan" ?

Very pertinent question to which you will find an array of answers( if people venture to provide answers.)

-Most people may say that these are two separate countries in South Asia

- Some might say, India is a country of Hindus and Pakistan is that of Musalmaans

- Some Pakistanis will say that they got their land liberated from the hindus, and it is now an abode of the pure

- Some Indians may say that Pakistan is the result of Jinnah and Muslim League's back-stabbing in the Independence movement.

some ( very few) will say that India and Pakistan are testimoney to the greed of few people who wanted to rule a part of land, and if you still want more answers, which actually may raise more questions, then read Manto's "Tobha Tek Singh".

The information one gets from human rights organisations from both
the Pakistani and Indian Punjab is that sexual harassment of low
caste/low community women is widespread

I have had the privilege of freely visiting both sides of the
Punjab. The two Punjabs are similar, but also different in many
ways, one being the situation of women.

The differences are easily noticeable. East Punjab has been a
progressive state within the Indian Union and has done well
economically and educationally. Girls and women enjoy much greater
freedom of movement in that part and have higher visibility in the
social and cultural life of towns and cities.

In my search for oral histories on Punjab's partition in 1947 my
assistant Vicky and I and later Hitesh Gosain and Virinder Singh
visited many villages. To my great surprise the doors were almost
always open and one could literally walk into any house and talk to
the women � young, middle-aged and old. Often we would ask for the
male head of the family, and if he were not home we would be told
where to find him.

In sharp contrast, when Ahmad Salim and I visited villages in the
Pakistani Punjab there was no question of seeing a female face. I
don't know if it was always like this since I am a city bird, having
lived all my 26 years in Pakistan in the urban centres.

There is, however, no doubt that more and more girls in the
Pakistani Punjab go to school and college and the old Lahore-
Rawalpindi Grand Trunk road is filled with girls going to and coming
back from school and college. Invariably, they move in groups and
are almost always on foot.

I am told that during the Khalistan insurgency women were forced
away from the public sphere in East Punjab too. But that has changed
for the better. In Pakistan the grip of fundamentalist Islam remains
firm and I don't know when moderate Islam will begin to make a
difference to the lives of ordinary people. Arranging one mixed
marathon in Gujranwala � once a sleepy old town of pehalwans
(wrestlers) and their akharas (wrestling and training arenas) but
now a stronghold of gun-totting jihadis and their madrassas � is
hardly indicative of any change.

However, common to both Punjabs is the fact that women who belong to
the lowest sections of society � low status communities in the
Pakistani Punjab and Dalits in the Indian Punjab � continue to be
sexually exploited by the affluent and those exercising authority
within the rural social structures. Let me give two examples.

I received an urgent appeal issued by the Asian Human Rights
Commission that Miss G and her mother M were gang-raped in Kabirwala
(a hamlet close to Multan) and the criminals were the henchmen of a
provincial law minister. Please note that we were dealing with
someone supposed to uphold law and monitor human rights violations
in the Pakistani Punjab!

The two unfortunate women belonged to a depressed community or caste
called Batti (presumably a different caste altogether from Bhatti
who are Rajputs). The mother and daughter were first abducted and
then gang-raped. Miss G had managed to educate herself and secured
an MA in Education, notwithstanding opposition from the upper
castes. She was working as a teacher in a school, but her services
were terminated and she and her family were allegedly told to leave
Kabirwala by the police and the civil administration.

The second case is that of a Dalit girl, B, of village Burj Jhabbar
in Mansa district, East Punjab. She was gang-raped on 6 July 2002.
Her father went to the police who initially refused to file an FIR.
However, public protests forced the police to register an FIR a
month later. It led to convictions of three assaulters, all of whom
were sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, the Sarpanch (headman) of the Panchayat and his elder
brother, an ex-sarpanch � both local leaders of the Congress party �
became sworn enemies of the girl's father. He was first attacked in
August 2005, then again a second time in December 2005 and finally
on 5 January 2006 allegedly by minions of the headmen. His arms and
one leg were badly injured and had to be amputated. Those involved
in the atrocity have not been arrested yet.

Throughout this terrible ordeal the police and the civil
administration were most reluctant to help even though the girl's
father belonged to a radical peasant organisation, the Mazdoor Mukti
Morcha, and was able to mobilise mass protests and demonstration all
the way to the capital Delhi. Even the Indian Zee TV showed a
defiant and fearless fellow lying on a cot with his arms and one leg
severed from his frail body. An FIR has now been registered against
the headman and his brother.

It can be argued that gang rape is rare and one should not pass a
harsh judgment on the overall situation in the two Punjabs. But the
information one gets from human rights organisations from both the
Pakistani and Indian Punjab is that sexual harassment of low
caste/low community women is widespread. Short of rape and grievous
physical assault, many other injuries and indignities can be
inflicted on the poor in the rural areas.

Poverty, low status, and stigma deriving from the caste system in
the Indian Punjab and its variant of biradari system on the
Pakistani side, combine to deny millions of human beings their basic
right to be recognised as human beings. It also renders them
vulnerable to unpaid or underpaid labour, and in the case of women
to sexual exploitation. That is surely not the type of Punjab we
want to idolise and idealise on both sides of the border.

of Kaifi and the International Mushairas in which Kaifi Azmi was
with me.
   Kaifi Azmi always desired PEACE , PEACE.He was a grat poet
and a wonderful friend.

film,movie by spending whatever little paisa/taka is left in their
phati purani pockets several times 'looted' by .... and zamana etc.
