4-CEP emu Trailer Brake Composite Corridor coach 70345 is now up for sale
from the Coventry Railway Centre.

This coach built to the same dimensions as a Mk 1 coach has four first class and one standard class compartment and
a guards office with luggage cage.

Toilets are at each end of the vehicle, and fitted with original large sinks, black tiled floor and original toilet bowls, all in full working order.…
It is both internally and externally complete and mounted on original commonwealth bogies with functioning air brake equipment, good brake blocks and plenty of wheel tread. As an ex EMU trailer car couplings are solid shank buckeye at each end and thus the vehicle was built without buffers.

70345 was part of class 411 4-CEP unit 1500 and was the first unit facelifted at Swindon works in the 1970s, unlike later refurbishment's it
kept the original Mark 1 sliding vent type windows (double glazed) and the ornate ceiling.
The vehicle was later used in unit 1547 when 1500 was disbanded.

Expressions of interest in buying the vehicle, obtaining photographs and arranging private viewing should be directed to the current owner by
contacting robsdavidson@...

This may appear a bit like an Alfred Roberts thing, but this could be something very good indeed. it is taken direct from SERA's website.

please read on...

Suburban Electric Railway Association
Class 501 EMU Rescue Project

The Aims Of Project 501
501 graphic

There is a single class 501 driving motor coach left in store on Humberside, which had previously been formed in a two car de-icer/sandite unit used on Merseyside. In addition one each of driving trailer and intermediate trailer types are in existence and found at the Marchwood Military Port in Hampshire where they were previously used as a personnel carriers.

As can be deduced from the details of the surviving vehicles as described above, there is still one last opportunity to form an authentic three car unit in preservation, as both an example of the class and as the last AND ONLY complete purely North London DC electric unit in preservation. To acquire a complete 501 unit we need finance, both to fund the purchase and to meet the cost of transporting the cars to a restoration site. We are looking to people like you to help provide this.

The project is being promoted by the Suburban Electric Railway Association (SERA). This association has already gained experience in the field of EMU preservation with the acquisition of the 4-SUB, LMS 503 and BR South Tyneside EPB units, all of which were the last survivors of their type. This was achieved by raiding funds via a share scheme and this method is also to be employed to raise the needed finance for Project 501.Shares are priced at £100 each and are available to buy now ! You can spread the cost of a share purchase by paying in monthly instalments.

Each share sold takes us nearer to our target figure, and closer to success. You can buy any number of shares you want from one upwards, and as a shareholder you will be a part owner in any 501 vehicles purchased. Shareholders have full voting rights on all matters affecting the unit such as livery and future use and display. Voting rights are on a one share - one vote basis so the greater your share holding the greater your voting power. A home for the unit will be at the Coventry Electric Railway Centre where SERA has based all of its other restoration projects and is currently developing as a electric traction heritage centre.

The picture on the left is of the celebrity depot shunter Beastie at Strawberry Hill converted from a 501 motor car. The picture on the right shows the remains of it after it was cut up in Sept'97. The only way to stop all the surviving cars going the same way is to support PROJECT 501.

SERA has acquired all parts necessary to enable a full restoration on a 501 unit. All we need you to do is to buy shares and help raise the funds to buy the unit. If you would like to know more about becoming a shareholder including details of our easy pay instalments scheme then  contact us using the e-mail link on the left.

PROGRESS TO DATE

The Share Scheme

To date the total pledges of share sales received for this scheme equate to 75% of the total needed for the purchase and transportation of all three cars. New promotion and publicity of the project is being worked upon (such as this web site) in an effort to bring in more funds.

Home For The Unit:

Spare Parts Acquisition:

A detailed examination of what components would be required to reverse the alterations that have been made to the three vehicles we are aiming to purchase for preservation and how they could be acquired has been made at a very early stage. Due to some industrious procurement all of these components have now been obtained and are in store.

A large number of other spare parts have also been obtained such as:

  • Spare traction motors

  • Spare motor generator set

  • Door and windows

  • Electrical equipment (contactors and relays)

  • Brake equipment

  • Various minor fittings for cab, brake van and saloon area.

The project is very well equipped and also has a full technical library available for use as well as personnel with considerable experience on these units.

After being cut off for forgetting a bill for the past few days I am now back on line, but not for long, as I will be off to Dartmoor again very soon!

What is needed this Saturday is a big show of faces at Okehampton Station, 4pm, the more the merrier!

Absentees will get their legs broken (Statement Copyright G. Gleaves, who, Ironically, will not be there!)

In all seriousness though, here is a big chance to get 1198 moved more to the forefront of the Dartmoor Rly's doings, which is what we are all about.

It is a volunteer's meeting, and will include the steam engine builders (4 or 5 members) and the Wine and Dine crew (about the same) and EMUPS (so far 15 potential members!)

New members can bring twenty quid with them and their details which will be sent on to the Eckington address, and will become members then and there.

I know there is a staff tour of bits of the LB&SCR on the day in question (Typical! Coventry really needs people on the 19th and there is ANOTHER poxy tour on the same day as well!), but it is possible to do the first part of the tour up to Victoria, arriving around midday, then jump on the tube round to Paddington and head off to Exeter, thus getting the best of both 'worlds'

Presumably something similar could be done on the 19th and Coventry? Perhaps something along these lines could be announced on the train PA?

I will be on 12 hour days on the 19th, but am 'not available for duty' on Sunday the 20th, so will be at Coventry then.

Regards to all
Albert

Could list all the EPBPG stuff and the 4 COR? Northampton aswell

This list is of recent preservations of slamdoor EMUs within the past few years, and those planned.

class 302
two DTs have been saved, and work back-to-back with a loco at Mangapps, near Burnham on Crouch, Essex

class 308
a DT has been saved and is being restored at the Pump House, Walthamstow. This location is currently only open to volunteers, not the public.

class 309
The one most people want to see saved, two departmentals still exist at Shoeburyness, and ACEMU is chasing things up.

class 411 / 412
Complete units: (this ignores any rumours, only those listed below are definite)
2325, saved, at East Kent Rly, Shepherds Well, Kent
1198, saved, at Dartmoor Rly, Meldon (This area is part of a working quarry and not open to the general public - the unit will hopefully enter service soon)
2311, to be saved, and go to the Eden Valley Rly, based at Warcop, but running soon to Appleby. This unit may be painted in 'Jaffa Cake' livery
2315, to be saved,and also go to the Eden Valley Rly.

1512 is OWNED by SWT, it may be worth an approach once 1499 gets demoted to Bournemouth depot shunter, the position 1512 currently holds.

Parts of units:
1393's TS, originally in 1589, will apparently be saved soon, along with the rest of the unit (see class 421)
This means that 1589 is preserved although the DMSOs are at Meldon, the TBC is at Snibston discovery Pk, Leics, and the TS is in 1393.

class 421
1753, saved, mothballed at an airfield in Suffolk.
1393, to be saved, by whom not known at this time.

PLUS two 3 CIGs have been created to operate a 'heritage service' on the Lymington branch, by SWT

PLUS an unknown at this time 'phase 2' to be saved by Southern TOC, replacing 1705 which is to be scrapped..

class 423
Complete Units:
3810, to be saved, by whom not known at this time. (this one went to Germany)

Parts of units:
A DT has been saved and is at the Bideford and Instow Rly

The following complete units have been saved or will hopefully be...

1198  as 3 car  by EMUPS  at Meldon
1589  both DMSOs at Meldon  TBC at Snibston, Leics  TSO in unit 1393, hopefully to go to Meldon
1698  rumoured to be saved by Shepherd Neame (founded 1698)
2311  complete, to go to Eden Valley Rly
2315  complete, to go to Eden Valley Rly
2325  complete, by EPBPG  at East Kent Rly

Some suggestions have been made re the 1589 coaches. the TSO would replace DMSA 61742 as the stores coach.

This means that only 1512, 1697 and 1699 will be going for scrap... unless another line decides it wants a CEP, that is...

Hi Steve
You're up late!
The whole thing was cut and pasted from the EMUPS constitution with

In a week or so, the EMU Preservation Society will be holding an EGM.

This will set out what we intend to do etc.

We are taking a rather unusual step, in inviting suggestions to be
included in our agends.

These will be discussed and either adopted or not at the EGM.

Most, if not all of the current members are sensible people, who we
think will have good ideas, so please, let us hear some of them.

Regards
Albert

Due to an administrative minor error, 1198 will now go to Dartmoor
direct from Fratton at a later date.
