Dear ICL Captains,

Some info on this week's ICL round at Gransden, could you please pass this on to anyone coming along.

I've just seen the following headline on the Sky News web site…

`Britain is heading for a cooler, wetter, spell after enjoying temperatures higher than the Mediterranean resorts at the start of the week.'

It must be an ICL weekend !!!

Cheers,

Colin

PS - There appears to be a problem with the East_Mids_ICL email address as Yahoo do not seem to recognise it. Has anyone else had this problem

Dear All,

It's now less than a week until the Gransden Inter Club League round, home of Cambridge Gliding Centre (CGC) and I thought it best to make contact with you all at this stage to cover some housekeeping details.

Scoring

Scoring on the day will be based on the declared start / finish times; however you will need to supply your club ICL captain with the logger traces within 7 days of the comp. These will then be used to calculate the final scoring. Please ensure that you have the ability to download your loggers.

Catering

Once again unfortunately CGC do not have full time on site catering facility. Unfortunately breakfasts will not be available on either Saturday or Sunday, Sandwiches, teas, coffees etc. will be available though the kitchen.

Arrangements are being made for a Fish and Chip Supper on Saturday night place when the bar will be open. Please feel free to make as much use of this facility as possible!

The Fish supper menu is:

Cod & Chips,
Haddock and Chips
1/2 Chicken & Chips
1/4 Chicken & Chips
Jumbo Sausage & Chips or
Vegetarian Burger & Chips

 Accommodation

We now have a number of bunk rooms available on site. Please contact the office if you would like to book one of these.

 Airfield Location

Directions and a map of how to get to the airfield can be found on the club web site at http://www.glide.co.uk/aboutus/airfield.asp. For those without web access, below are the directions in a textual format.

Our GPS Coordinates: Latitude:      52°11.154´ N; Longitude: 0°6.576´ W

Our address is:        Gransden Lodge Airfield, Longstowe Road, Little Gransden, Sandy, Bedfordshire SG19 3EB

Note:                     Although the address is in Bedfordshire, the airfield in really in South Cambridgeshire!

Directions

From the North:

From the A14 at Godmanchester take the A1198 south for 11 miles until you reach Longstowe village.

From the South:

If you are coming from London you can either take the M11 or Al:
M11: Exit at Junction 13 and turn west onto the A428. After about 5 miles turn south on the A1198 until you reach Longstowe village.
A1: Travel north until you reach Eaton Socon where you turn east onto the A428 for about 5 miles. Turn south on the A1198 until you reach Longstowe village.

From the East:

Leave the Cambridge area on the A428. 8 miles after crossing the M11, turn south on the A1198 until you reach Longstowe village.

From the West:

Take the A428 (previously A45 (T)) east from St Neots for about 8 miles. Turn south on the A1198 until you reach Longstowe village.

Do NOT take the turn signposted `Gransden Airfield' in Caxton village.

Then from all directions:

In Longstowe turn west off the A1198 on to the B1046, signposted 'Longstowe' and 'Gransden Airfield'. (Do not take the turn signposted 'Gransden Airfield' in Caxton village.)

Drive through Longstowe village, then continue about 1.5 miles towards Little Gransden. The airfield entrance is on the B1046 between Longstowe and Little Gransden (Ordnance Survey map ref. TL289537) which is 0.4 mile after passing a water tower on your right.

There you turn right at the Gliding Club sign opposite Gransden Lodge Farm. Be sure to indicate early since we have had some incidents here. Proceed down the track at no more than 15mph. If a Clay Pigeon shoot is in progress, the main track will be blocked. Stop at the signs, wait for one of the shooters to signal that it is OK to proceed then be prepared to take a small detour around their site, following the signs.

When you reach the concrete track by the windsock, pause and read the safety signs there. Then turn right and drive all the way around the track to the clubhouse house, ignoring a turning on your left. Depending on the wind direction we may be operating from a position next to the track. Please drive on to the Clubhouse. Keep a good look out for landing aircraft and be prepared to stop until they pass. Additional signs will be positioned where you need to take special care.

 Airfield Layout / Trailers

On the office window there will be a layout of the airfield showing the active runways and the position where we would like competitors to locate their trailers, caravans and tents. You can see that although we have a large open airfield, most of it is either trailer park (which is very nearly full) or active runway! Hence the reason why the location is so far from the clubhouse. Apologies for this.

There is no problem if competitors wish to drop off trailers and caravans before the event – I know that some are passing Gransden on the way back from competing in other events across the country. Just please make contact with the office to let them know you are there and which trailers and caravans are yours. The office is manned (womanned!) 7 days a week 9:00 – 18:00. If you arrive outside these hours please contact the office on 01767 677077 as the earliest opportunity.

CGC do not own the airfield but rent it from number of local farmers, all whom will need access to the various parts of the airfield. Please do not block obvious access routes, particularly behind and near the clubhouse. A Combine Harvester can make an awful mess of a badly parked car!

Security

In common with most gliding clubs, Gransden Lodge is not particular secure, so please ensure that all valuables are secured out of sight. CGC can not accept responsibility for any damage or loss. Please report anything suspicious to the office.

Briefing

Briefing will take place at 10:30 am on the Saturday. Please keep an eye on the weather and if it looks good, rig before briefing – a notice board will be used to confirm this as well as the runway in use.

CGC Club Flying

CGC club flying will most probably be taking place during the competition so please respect the ongoing club operations. Competition flying will take preference and club flying will be halted during the starts and finishes.

If you have any questions regarding the competition, please contact me via club's ICL captain.

Here's hoping for a successful and safe weekend of flying – we just need the weather.
