RE: [East_Mids_ICL] New Rules - As Discussed at Hus Bos 4 May

Hi Guys
Oops - Chris has made an error in his wording now - Miriam has it correct - better I think to define what constitutes an Intermediate. Dont forget anyone can be a pundit but in order to be an intermediate, the proposal agreed by the clubs a the meeting requires that the pilot must NOT have been in top half of Nationals last ten years or flown a 750km - I dont recall UK being specified in the discussion?
In your case Colin, assuming you have no intention of entering a Nationals event, then using the new draft criteria, you would be eligible for Intermediate and pundit until you achieved a 750km flight at which stage you would be able to enter as a pundit only the following season.

The big issue is that the newly introduced 10% rule sucks and must go - something should replace it to solve the underlying problem that it was intended to solve, that being that many progressive clubs have virtually no Intermediates as they get fast tracked to be pundits by the old definition and then never or rarely get the opportunity of participating in Interclub as there are so many to chose from whilst the Intermediate slot is extremely hard to fill. Even Novices are hard to find for us but that's partly our problem and down to extremely low recruitment last few years at Husbos although the new proposal to delay the onset of being an Intermediate will also help.
When Interclub rules were written, 500km was a dream for most just like 750km is now that we have improved the art of soaring and have better equipment.Nationals were events that only the top few in Regional's ever qualified to enter - now anyone can fly a Nationals in any class if they feel like it. The intention is certainly not to change the rationale behind Interclub as a fun event that can be entered by the most fledgling cross country pilot - its just an experiment to rebalance the classification to today's situation to ensure that all teams can put a team together relatively easily, ensure full participation and be inclusive for the biggest group of interested pilots - the suggested proposals, once ironed out appear to me to be a reasonable stab at achieving this!

Cheers
Russell

Chris

What you are saying now I think is different to the post that Miriam made – there is one word difference – NOT (copy of Miriam’s post)

Pundit - anyone who has been placed in the top half of a Nationals in the last 10 years
- anyone who has flown a UK 750km.

Copy of your post

It was therefore agreed that a pundit is someone who has not been in the top half of a Nationals for the previous 10 years or completed a UK 750K

Which one of the two is correct? As for myself I have a 500 but not a 750 and have never flown in a nationals, but have flown regional’s for about 30 years, so going by the original post I could not make pundit but only Intermediate

Colin

Regarding the new pundit rules.

There were a number of people sitting around the table at HUS and a number of conversations, however I think everyone agreed that the present rule for a pundit to fly intermediate with a 10% penalty just did not work. In a number of clubs there is a preponderance of pundits who fly X-country every week and who are literally waiting to get selected. Furthermore the distinction between a seasoned pundit – one who flies a 500K before breakfast type - and an intermediate who may have just completed his first 300K, is significant. Therefore we needed a rule to distinguish the hardened pundit and good intermediate.

It was therefore agreed that a pundit is someone who has not been in the top half of a Nationals for the previous 10 years or completed a UK 750K. In fact I have some pundits that are having to look back to 9 years ago and whether they made the overall 50% mark or not!
It would be helpful if we could agree something early – as I need to select a team for Saltby and travel to Spain for 2 weeks on the 14th May.
