How about putting an "either" in the sentence instead....
An intermediate is someone who has flown either a UK 300km or more than 2 Regionals.
A pundit is someone who has flown either a UK 750km or has been placed top half of a UK Nationals.

You wouldn't believe how hard it is to write three sentences or misinterpret the same three sentences :-) I didn't get the highest grade in English "O" level you know
Your quite right Julian and thanks Rolf for illustrating the error so that I even I could see it!
So maybe:-
Novice - a pilot who has not flown a UK 300km in UK as P1 in any year except the current and previous year, has not entered more than 1 Regional's(Junior Championship excepted), and has not flown a UK 500km as P1
Intermediate - a pilot who has not flown a 750km in UK as P1 and has not achieved a top 50% position in any Nationals last ten years
Pundit - anyone can be a pundit
Eureka....maybe?

Sorry Russell - I agree with Julian's logic, based on the fact your rules have ORs as well as NOTs.
So by your rules below, for example, anyone who has NOT done a 500k will be a novice due to the OR, irrespective of the number of regionals they've done!!
Rolf
Hi Julian
They have to be OR's otherwise, as an example, a pilot who never enters Regional's will always remain a Novice even if he/she flies a 1000km as putting AND's in will require all requirements to be met before a pilot is required to move on a class.
I am sure it was the intention that a pilot moves on to another class if any one of the requirements are exceeded?

Hi Russell,
I think the ORs should be ANDs in the clauses. As for the rest, it works for me.

I’ve been sitting on the sidelines
watching these mails (as I was lucky enough to relinquish my ICL responsibilities
to Julian Bane) and in an effort to clarify have come up with the following set
of question that when asked of the competing pilot will come up with their ICL
Category…..
So…..
1. Have you flown a UK 750km? [If the
answer is Yes – Stop answering the questions - You’re a Pundit]
2, Have you finished in the top half of a
Nationals (Excluding the Juniors) in the last 10 years? [If the answer is Yes –
Stop answering the questions - You’re a Pundit]
3. Have you flown a UK 500km? [If the answer is Yes –
Stop answering the questions - You’re an Intermediate]
4. Have you flown a 300km before last year?
[If the answer is Yes – Stop answering the questions - You’re an
Intermediate]
5. Have you competed in two or more
Regionals? [If the answer is Yes – Stop answering the questions - You’re
an Intermediate]
6. If you’re still answering questions
– You’re a Novice!
Cheers,
Colin Cownden

The good news is that everyone seems to be in general
agreement with the principles involved.
Chris L's last rendition below has two
issues:-
1 It doesn't handle the fact that we
wanted the 300km hurdle to have an extra years grace but a 500km to
immediately push you into Intermediate
2 The Junior Championship has
been tacked onto the Pundit classification, possibly because it is sometimes
termed the "Junior Nationals". However, in fact its a Regional's
status event and I believe as it encourages Juniors barely qualified
for CC to participate because its free, it should be regarded as an
"exempt" Regional's. So the exception should appear in
Intermediate classification.
I obviously prefer my rendition once
corrected but it really doesn't matter as long as the content is there

I have always been a
fan of NANDs and NORs...but simply put, the problem is we are trying to start
with defining a Novice as a function of what they have not done...and proving a
negative is always more dificult..hence it is a lot simpler to start with a
pundit (defined by what the have done) and then work down..ie
If you
have done a 750 or finished in the top half of a National (excl Juniors) you
are a pundit
If you are not a pundit but have done a 300 or competed in 2 Regionals
you are an intermediate
If you are not a pundit or an intermediate you are a novice
All definititions are
as at Jan 1st of the year in question...so if you get your next 'tick in the
box' mid season, it does not count until the following year.
Thoughts?

Hi
Russell,
I agree with the intention but as written it is:-
Novice: A pilot who has not done A OR not done B OR not done C
meaning a pilot not having done B will always be a Novice
I think it should be either
Novice: A pilot who has not done; A or B or C.
Novide: A pilot who has not done A and not done B and not done C.
Chris Davison also commented on logical operators in an earlier post, care to
comment Chris?

I like this
but we need to add a few more words for clarity:-
If you have
done a UK 750 or finished in the top half of a National (excl Juniors) in the
last 10 years you are a pundit
If you are not a pundit but have done a 300 (any 300 – not just badge
claim) or competed in 2 Regionals you are an intermediate
If you are not a pundit or an intermediate you are a novice

I have always been a fan of NANDs and
NORs...but simply put, the problem is we are trying to start with defining
a Novice as a function of what they have not done...and proving a negative
is always more dificult..hence it is a lot simpler to start with a pundit
(defined by what the have done) and then work down..ie
If you have done a 750 or finished in the
top half of a National (excl Juniors) you are a pundit
If you are not a pundit but have done a 300 or competed in 2 Regionals
you are an intermediate
If you are not a pundit or an intermediate you are a novice
All definititions are as at Jan 1st
of the year in question...so if you get your next 'tick in the box' mid
season, it does not count until the following year.

Hi Russell,
I agree with the intention but as written it is:-
Novice: A pilot who has not done A OR not done B OR not done C
meaning a pilot not having done B will always be a Novice
I think it should be either
Novice: A pilot who has not done; A or B or C.
Novide: A pilot who has not done A and not done B and not done C.

Sorry Russell - I agree with Julian's logic, based on the fact your
rules have ORs as well as NOTs.
So by your rules below, for example, anyone who has NOT done a 500k
will be a novice due to the OR, irrespective of the number of regionals
they've done!!
Rolf
Hi Julian
They have to be OR's otherwise,
as an example, a pilot who never enters Regional's will always remain a
Novice even if he/she flies a 1000km as putting AND's in will require
all requirements to be met before a pilot is required to move on a
class.
I am sure it was the
intention that a pilot moves on to another class if any one of the
requirements are exceeded?

Wouldn't this be better in reverse to illustrate that pilots of lower experience may always move up a class as required or wished.
This is how the original National Interclub wording was couched.
Suggested below to incorporate all additional caveats that appear to be suggested and required:-
--------------------
Novice - a pilot who has not flown a UK 300km in UK as P1 in any year except the current and previous one OR has not entered more than 1 Regional's OR has not flown a UK 500km as P1
Intermediate - a pilot who has not flown a 750km in UK as P1 OR has not achieved a top 50% position in any Nationals last ten years
Pundit - anyone can be a pundit
-------------------
I would like to see Junior Championship(Regional's) excluded from Novice definition as Juniors aspire to enter this free(BGA funded) event even before they have a Silver C
Is the above any good??????

Dear All
Having thrown in deliberate mistake in my last communication (well spotted
Chris!) I recall the discussion regarding a pilot's move from Novice to
Intermediate. The word "OR" is correct and we said that when a Novice had
competed in 2 or more Regionals they would be considered an Intermediate. I
think in this case we could dispense with the "additional year".

I am sure Miriam meant OR but I do feel that it was decided that more than 1 Regional's put you in Intermediate for following year and not more than 2 - also its not clear whether dispensation to allow Novice an extra year after qualifying to move up applies to Regional's - suggest NOT - if so then our novices could well be competing have done five Regional's?
Chris has a very valid point regarding Novice 500km - suggest a 500km should put pilot straight into Intermediate for following season.
We need to be careful to not go too far with this or nearly everyone will qualify as a novice :-)
Cheers

Hi all, can we claifiy the logical operands here
is it
1) 2. An Intermediate is anyone who has flown a UK 300km AND has competed in more than 2 UK Regionals..
If so then we are saying that a Novice can have done a 300 and a few 500's , but as long as they have not flown 3 regionals they don't qualify as an intermediate?
So I presume we are saying 'OR' - which makes sense as if you are on your 3rd regionals you areprobably going to have cracked a 300.
I fully support the rule changes for pundit based on my performance last weekend!!

[East_Mids_ICL] New Rules - Bringing All the Threads Together
Dear all,
There appear to be several different conversations going on at the moment so in an attempt to bring them all together, please see below:
1. A Novice is anyone who has at least a Cross Country Endorsement, has not flown a UK 300km and can have competed in up to 2 UK Regional competitions.
2. An Intermediate is anyone who has flown a UK 300km, has competed in more than 2 UK Regionals.
3. A Pundit is anyone who has flown a UK 750km or has been placed in the top half of a UK Nationals in the last 10 years.
4. There is a period of grace between the move from Novice to Intermediate of one year. For example; if a novice flies a 300km this season (2009), they will not be expected to fly as an Intermediate until the 2011 season.
5. Anyone can move up a class without any penalties. If you feel that an Intermediate could compete against Pundits (or to soothe their feelings!), there is no penalty in doing this.
Russell makes a good point that the orignal rules were designed a long time ago and these changes reflect the changes which have taken place in aircraft design, instrumentation.... etc.
Hopefully this makes it clearer!

Oops - Chris has made an error in his wording now - Miriam has it correct - better I think to define what constitutes an Intermediate. Dont forget anyone can be a pundit but in order to be an intermediate, the proposal agreed by the clubs a the meeting requires that the pilot must NOT have been in top half of Nationals last ten years or flown a 750km - I dont recall UK being specified in the discussion?
In your case Colin, assuming you have no intention of entering a Nationals event, then using the new draft criteria, you would be eligible for Intermediate and pundit until you achieved a 750km flight at which stage you would be able to enter as a pundit only the following season.
The big issue is that the newly introduced 10% rule sucks and must go - something should replace it to solve the underlying problem that it was intended to solve, that being that many progressive clubs have virtually no Intermediates as they get fast tracked to be pundits by the old definition and then never or rarely get the opportunity of participating in Interclub as there are so many to chose from whilst the Intermediate slot is extremely hard to fill. Even Novices are hard to find for us but that's partly our problem and down to extremely low recruitment last few years at Husbos although the new proposal to delay the onset of being an Intermediate will also help.
When Interclub rules were written, 500km was a dream for most just like 750km is now that we have improved the art of soaring and have better equipment.Nationals were events that only the top few in Regional's ever qualified to enter - now anyone can fly a Nationals in any class if they feel like it. The intention is certainly not to change the rationale behind Interclub as a fun event that can be entered by the most fledgling cross country pilot - its just an experiment to rebalance the classification to today's situation to ensure that all teams can put a team together relatively easily, ensure full participation and be inclusive for the biggest group of interested pilots - the suggested proposals, once ironed out appear to me to be a reasonable stab at achieving this!
Cheers

What you are saying now I think is different to the post that Miriam made – there is one word difference – NOT (copy of Miriam’s post)
Pundit - anyone who has been placed in the top half of a Nationals in the last 10 years - anyone who has flown a UK 750km.
Copy of your post
It was therefore agreed that a pundit is someone who has notbeen in the top half of a Nationals for the previous 10 years or completed a UK 750K
Which one of the two is correct? As for myself I have a 500 but not a 750 and have never flown in a nationals, but have flown regional’s for about 30 years, so going by the original post I could not make pundit but only Intermediate

Regarding the new pundit rules.
There were a number of people sitting around the table at HUS and a number of conversations, however I think everyone agreed that the present rule for a pundit to fly intermediate with a 10% penalty just did not work. In a number of clubs there is a preponderance of pundits who fly X-country every week and who are literally waiting to get selected. Furthermore the distinction between a seasoned pundit – one who flies a 500K before breakfast type - and an intermediate who may have just completed his first 300K, is significant. Therefore we needed a rule to distinguish the hardened pundit and good intermediate.
It was therefore agreed that a pundit is someone who has not been in the top half of a Nationals for the previous 10 years or completed a UK 750K. In fact I have some pundits that are having to look back to 9 years ago and whether they made the overall 50% mark or not! It would be helpful if we could agree something early – as I need to select a team for Saltby and travel to Spain for 2 weeks on the 14th May.

I keep sending messages and they keep bouncing back to this Group. Is there a
reason for this? Is anyone else having the same problem, as I am finding it
difficult to debate the rules when I can't send text.
Hi Chris,
I have not had any problems.

I think Miriam must have slipped with the keyboard - there was a doubt at the meeting you kindly allowed me to sit in on, as to what the current rule was exactly but it was certainly confirmed that what was wanted was that a novice jumping the novice 300km hurdle in 2009 season would not be forced into Intermediate until the 2011 season and would therefore have another season to practise their art in Novice - that was my understanding anyway??
I also believe that it was agreed that this dispensation did not apply to the Regional's hurdle and also that it was in fact "more than 1 Regional's" and NOT "more than 2" as Miriam has recorded???
There was also a discussion on how to classify Junior Championship - I believe it was decided that this should be disregarded completely but I dont think it was formalised???
Suggest discuss and clarify
Kind regards
Russell

Hi Miriam,
Point 3: As stated I think this is as per the old rules. i.e. not flown a 300km prior to April 1st of the year you are competing in. Do you mean 2011? This would be a years extension on the old rule or am I totally missing something.
Apart from clarification of that point I am happy to go along with it.
Best regards,

The basic changes are as follows:
1. The rule allowing pundits to fly as an intermediate with a 10% penalty has been scrapped. This was found to not be a big enough penalty at the Hus Bos weekend with the Hus Bos "intermediates" beating the "true" intermediates by over 30kph in one case.
2. The boundaries for the classes have been changed.
Novice - anyone who has not flown a UK 300km - is allowed to have flown 2 UK Regionals
Intermediate - anyone who has flown a UK 300km - has competed in more than 2 UK Regionals
Pundit - anyone who has been placed in the top half of a Nationals in the last 10 years - anyone who has flown a UK 750km

Does anyone else think that having come in the top half in a nationals or having
flown a 750 a bit OTT for the pundit on an interclub league. I thought this was
supposed to be a fun comp - not a nationals warm up!!
