Dear Fellow Friends of Southwark Park,

Did you know the council have published the Canada Water Area Action Plan? One of the proposals is to sell off the area of Southwark Park known as the Fish Farm, for housing development to pay for a new leisure centre.

Please take  time to voice your opinions on this and other local development plans by visiting

http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/planningandbuildingcontrol/planningpolicy/localdevelopmentframework/canadawaterareaactionplan.html

or you can write giving your comments to:
Planning Policy and Research Team,
Regeneration and Neighbourhoods Dept,
FREEPOST SE1919/14
London SE17 2ES

Please be aware that the Canada Water Area Action plan consultative period closes on the 20th February.

Only three people have provided feedback via the online questionaire - we need to make the council aware of how important our local green spaces are - and not to develop them without consultation and need.

FYI - its sections 5 and 7 that relate to the proposals for developing the Seven Islands leisure centre and the adjoining fish farm plot.

Thanks for reading this.

Regards

Jonathan Graham

Dear Friends,
On March 11th we met for a walk around and visual audit of the park
in preparation for this year's Green Flag. Park Manager Paul Highman
noted all required reparations, along with our other suggestions for
improvements. Paul will work with our standards officers, the head
gardener and contractors Quadron to bring the park 'up to scratch'.
The visual audit was the purpose of this get together so no minutes
were necessary.

Thanks to everyone for braving the wind and cold!

OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON:
Tuesday April 15th at the Cafe Gallery, Southwark Park
Start at 6pm prompt (sunset at 7pm!)

On the agenda will be: working towards a successful future for the
group, current vacancies on the Committee, and Summer events and
activities in Southwark Park. If you have any items for the agenda
please get in touch. Meeting notes from January 24th and an Agenda
will be available on the night.

Please pass on details to anyone interested in coming to the meeting,
contributing ideas, volunteering time or skills, or joining the
committee. (We are looking for a Treasurer)

We look forward to seeing you!

TUESDAY 11 MARCH 2008
MEET 6PM at the CAFÉ

We invite you to join us on a walk around Southwark Park. This walk
is one of several 'audits' that are being carried out as part of our
Green Flag programme. We will be looking at all aspects of the park
and asking for your feedback, comments and ideas about Southwark Park.

Green Flag – what is it and what are the benefits?
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green
spaces in England and Wales. In Southwark there are many examples of
thriving, popular parks and open spaces sites run by dedicated,
enthusiastic people working closely with their local communities.
Many places that were run-down and neglected just a few years ago
have been transformed and are now well used and loved. Green Flag
aims to recognise and reward this dedication to improving local parks
for and with local people, and achieving high environmental standards.

Winning a Green Flag Award is good for the park or green space and
good for the local community. A Green Flag park or green space is one
that is: welcoming; healthy, safe and secure; clean and well
maintained; sustainable; mindful of conservation and heritage and
encourages community involvement. A Green Flag park or open space
will provide good community facilities and will engender a sense of
civic pride.

Last year Southwark Council was awarded three Green Flags for three
of its major parks: Dulwich, Peckham Rye and Southwark Park. This
year the Council would like to submit applications for three smaller
parks Paterson Park, Bermondsey Spa and Sunray Gardens. Applications
must be submitted to Green Flag by the 31st of January and judges
will visit the sites in April and May 2008. In June 2008 we will hear
whether the parks have been awarded Green Flags.

Monday 17 December: 7pm. Tenants Hall. Marden Square. Al very welcome.

Southwark Council's public meeting.

The competition winning architects, the Head Teacher and the project
team will be there to explain plans and programme.

They'll also detail the bit of land the school is taking at the back
of the site by Layard Square.

Leaflets went round the area today and yesterday....they couldn't go
out earlier because of the Riverside Ward election last Thursday.
