Dear Hisgies,
At Mikes request I hereby post my modifications to get Big Ben working. A
shufti through an el-cheapo " Reject Shop" un-earthed some rather small
travelling alarm clocks with a smallish quartz movement for AU$2.00
each...see pic.
Atached also is the instruction page from the manual showing how the clock
faces are assembled.
My first re-action to this model was to try and light up the clocks by
putting a globe behind the faces and using clear plastic 2 1/2" X 2 1/2"
plates instead of the metal ones in the set.
There being too many holes to fill in to make it look realistic made this
idea redundant.
Hearing of Dave Taylors challenge to make each face a working clock with a
second hand ( even the real clock doesn't have "second" hands) resulted in
the above purchase of four quartz alarm clocks.
Remove the quartz movements from their plastic alarm clock body, also remove
all the hands from each movement...on mine they just pulled off easily.
Remove the 4 nuts and bolts fixing each clock face to the angle brackets,
drill a 7/32" hole exactly in the middle of the original clock faces/plates,
then use adhesive to stick the face/plate to the angle brackets...turn the
frame over and stick the quartz movement to the same angle brackets, easing
the movement shafts through the 7/32" hole. I used an adhesive known as "
Tarzans Grip".
Also, remove the 7 hole narrow strip behind each face, make the four top
mounting angle brackets the same with their round hole outwards ready to
accept a standard bolt to retain each face. Didn't bother trying to fit nuts
to these bolts as they sit there by themselves OK....also easier to replace
battery or adjust time etc.
Hisgies, feel free to ask any questions. Cheers Dave Denner. Oz.
