Dear Colleagues
Friday Lunchtime ITV London News
There was a filmed report on the Friday Lunchtime ITV London News from Stockwell (I think) – where several Children have been in collisions with Cycle-riders charging through red lights on a controlled crossing. Parents were parading with Placards, with Children in tow etc. …all very impressive...and were interviewed on-Camera.
This is the e-mail that I managed to get read on the air on ‘London Tonight’, in response to the item when it was covered again in the evening. The first part was read by Alistair Stewart, then another comment from someone else asserting: “hit them where it hurts: in the pocket!” Much to my consternation, this was presented as if it was also my comment.
Dear Sir/Madam
Protest at Traffic Lights against ‘Cyclists’
As a Cycle-user and Campaigner, I sympathise with the protestors shown on your bulletin earlier today.
We are
repeatedly let down by an arrogant minority…but one can say the same for Motor Drivers – who can cause a lot more harm and injury by their inconsiderate actions.
I suggest that a solution could be to ensure that all potential road-users should be subjected to ‘progressive licensing’ – whereby Cycle-proficiency should be attained before moving on to motorised two-wheel modes. Thereafter, motorcycle proficiency should be achieved before applying for a provisional licence. By this means, Motor Drivers would learn what it was like to be vulnerable – and serve something of an
apprenticeship as part of the process.
The crew set up at another traffic-light junction location to check for miscreants, with Glen Goodman reporting. Sure enough, there were some classic examples, with one character hurtling across against red ― apparently regardless of the risks he was taking! All adverse publicity.
