One of the biggest recipients from Defra’s Climate Challenge Fund, CTC was one of 70 organisations to receive funding out of 500 who applied. At the centre of the campaign will be a short ad, to be shown in cinemas and elsewhere starting next summer. You can read more about the project here.In Cyclists we trustWith trust worthy of a Saint, Cycle retailer Halfords has launched borrowthebike.com – placing 10 individually named orange bikes around the streets of London. They’re not locked to anything and anyone is welcome to take them, ride them around and supposedly drop them off somewhere else when they’re finished. In comparison with Copenhagen’s free city bike scheme, and knowing the assiduity of London bike thieves, one questions how many of these bikes will make it to the end the trial period when they will be donated to the charity Bikes4Africa.ATOC National Cycle Rail AwardsToday’s the day! the deadline for nominations and entries for the annual ATOC National Cycle Rail Awards is today (Friday 8 September). CTC remains supportive of “Share the Road” and agree that all road users, cyclists included, should respect the rules of the road and one another’s safety. However, without endorsing law-breaking cyclists, the reasons for their actions (e.g. the much greater dangers they themselves experience at the hands of lawless drivers) need to be recognised and acted on if Ken’s campaign is to be effective. Read more, or see a joint statement on “Share the Road” from a range of cycling, pedestrian and sustainable transport interest groups.Personalised approach to reducing car travel yields spectacular resultsSustrans has published the results of its “TravelSmart” in Peterborough and Worcestershire. Around 6,500 people in each town were contacted and offered personalised advice about how they could reduce car use. The initiative achieved a 13% reduction in car trips for those contacted in Peterborough and a 12% reduction in Worcester, with significant shifts to cycling (25% and 36% respectively). At a cost of around £20 per household Sustrans believe it could be extended to a city the size of Birmingham (with 400,000 households) for the cost of a third of a mile of motorway.
