Latest bright idea from EU gambles with cyclists’ lives
Forthcoming European legislation which would force drivers to have front lights switched on in all daytime conditions would seriously undermine cyclists’ safety on the roads, according to CTC. We are urging all cyclists to join our online campaign calling on MEPs to oppose the Commission’s proposals. We believe that a blanket requirement to use so-called ‘daytime running lights’ (DRL) would make it much harder for drivers to see cyclists and that drivers would get into the habit of looking for lights, thus failing to notice cyclists and pedestrians as a result. CTC’s Campaigns & Policy Manager, Roger Geffen, said: “DRL will make it all the more likely that drivers will fail to spot cyclists. By ignoring this, the European Commission is gambling with cyclists’ lives – it’s one Euro lottery we certainly don’t want in the UK.” It takes less than two minutes to join the campaign here

£100k pumped into Cyclaire
The inventor of the Cyclaire bicycle pull-cord pump has won a national reality TV show which launched a hunt for Britain's next big idea. The pump, which has been on sale for a number of years, easily inflates tyres to 120psi. Julian Peck has now won £100,000 to further develop his idea. To win the original Cyclaire pump worth £16.95, reply to this newsletter with Cyclaire in the subject box – we’ll contact you next week if you’ve won. http://www.cyclaire.com/

Virtually does it for you
YouTube now features a selection of short basic cycle maintenance videos here. The films are aimed squarely at beginners, but we think it’s a great idea and we’ll let you know as more are added. (Podcast watchers can download higher-res versions here)

Symphony for singing bicycles
The 'Symphony for Singing Bicycles' is described as an open air event scored for a minimum of twelve cyclists with their own bicycles. And whilst the idea is clearly mad, a website gives instructions on how to transform your bike into an instrument and even promises a workshop to help you get in tune. Who needs an iPod?

He’s a rocket man
The trouble with jet-powered bicycles is that there’s always someone with a bigger rocket. Following our recent report about Jeremy Clarkson’s gas turbine bicycle, here’s a short online clip of how the professionals do it. Of course these aren’t bicycles in any meaningful sense of the word, but 153mph on the flat on a mountain bike is worth a look. dirtmag.co.uk (scroll to bottom of page)
