CTC AGM
The CTC AGM is taking place in Belfast on 26th April. If you are planning to come and join us and haven’t decided your route, it’s worth looking at the getting there page on the website.
We have been told that the Home Office confirmed in November 2007 that they would be exercising their powers under the Police & Justice Act 2006 to require photo ID for all travellers on internal flights and ferries, starting with routes to and from Northern Ireland. With this in mind, it may be a good idea to take your passport with you to avoid any disappointment.

Paris Roubaix
This weekend sees the world’s fastest riders race the 2008 edition of the Paris Roubaix. Often referred to as the “Hell of the North” this event is seen by many as the toughest one day race, covering 260km with 53km of cobblestones. Check the Eurosport schedule for when their coverage starts, but for those of you who’d like to get in the mood early, check out this trailer.
How pro-cycling are
they?
The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) recently asked the London Mayoral candidates to set out their cycling policy. To read what they had to say, the full article can be downloaded here (pdf).

Cape crusader
Do you want to feature in the new “BBC One Ident?” What’s an Ident? Well, it’s the “filler” that’s often shown on TV before the main television programme starts (click here to see some examples). The new one they’re filming at Earls Court (Thursday
24th April) has a caped cycling theme and 75 adult cyclists are needed with their own bikes and helmets (capes will be provided). There will be a payment of £100.00 per cyclist paid as cash on the day, on signature of an artist release form. They would also provide breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. The shoot day would be a 12 hour day, so as it’s a week day, a day off work may be needed. If you are interested, please e-mail capes@... with your contact details.

Merely careless?
Over the years, many of us have been on the receiving end of some dangerous driving. Without witnesses it can be hard work getting the police to take it seriously and, even when they do, the perpetrator often gets a minor charge and a slap on the wrist. As part of our ongoing campaign to reduce road danger, CTC is looking for your stories of dangerous drivers getting prosecuted for Careless Driving.
Email richard.george@... if you’ve been hit by a driver who was driving dangerously but was prosecuted for Careless Driving – and don’t forget to take part in our survey, at www.ctc.org.uk/survey
Eco-towns
The Government have announced the 15 short-listed sites around England from which 10 new ‘eco-towns’ will be selected for development. A consultation has been launched on the planning guidelines and on the sites themselves. The detailed transport principles sound excellent, including traffic minimisation, with car ownership predicted at just 50% of households and streets designed primarily for pedestrians and cyclists.
However, most of the sites selected are in areas of high road density near cities, often with poor public transport alternatives. These sites, such as Marston in
Bedfordshire and Hanley Grange near Cambridge, are likely to contribute to the sprawling development in these areas and lead to substantial increases in car and light goods traffic. Very few of the current site prospectuses appear to be planning to mitigate this threat.
Instead of new towns, the redevelopment of inner urban areas into ‘eco-quarters’ would be much more likely to result in genuine traffic minimisation and the dominance of walking and cycling modes.
Click here to read the consultation which closes on the 30th June. CTC will be preparing a response to the proposal and will be liaising with CTC representatives in the relevant regions.
CTC presentation at London walking and cycling conference
Transport for London's walking and cycling conference on Wednesday heard further details of the Mayor’s plans to increase cycling by 400% by 2025. The conference was also addressed by CTC's Sara Basterfield and TfL’s Katharina Kroeger on the lessons from the London Cycling Benchmarking Project . Alix Stredwick, Senior Transport Planner, from the London Borough of Hackney (one of the 11 boroughs involved in the project) also spoke about what Hackney had gained from taking part.

What’s on?
MTB Marathon Series
We hear from the guys at the MTB marathon events that the first weekend (12-13th April) of events in the 2008 Merida Marathon series
is filling up fast. With the introduction of the road sportive events, the events are attracting a lot of riders from here and abroad. All the events (except the ELBNO night marathon weekend) will also feature a round of the GORE BIKE WEAR Road Sportive Series on the Saturday. There will be two different sportive courses available (40-50mile & 80-100mile). The road sportives
will take place on Saturdays with the MTB marathons on the Sundays. This will allow all ‘cross-over’ riders to have a go at both rides of the weekend (discounted weekend ticket available). Entry forms can be found here.
