Dear David

Bike to Work

CTC predicts an extra1.25 million trips will be made by bicycle every day due to the rising price of petrol and diesel. After the last oil crisis in 1979 when fuel prices rocketed, cycling increased by almost 40%. With fuel prices higher than ever recorded CTC expects thousands of motorists to leave their cars at home and go to work by bike instead. In anticipation of a boom in cycling to work, CTC has rushed forward the launch of the Bike to Work package to support people leaving their cars for bicycles. The package costs £52 per year for new members and includes breakdown assistance, insurance and all the benefits of being a CTC member. For more information about CTC’s ‘Bike to Work’ package see www.ctc.org.uk/commuter.

NHS employers short change cyclists

CTC is calling on NHS employers to stop short changing cyclists who use their bike instead of a car for business mileage. A survey of the largest employer in the UK, the NHS, reveals more than one in ten NHS Trusts and Authorities in England do not pay cyclists a penny. According to data collected by Spokes – the NHS Cycling Network, 78% of NHS Trusts and Authorities in England pay either the bare minimum of 6.2p per mile or less. CTC is calling on the NHS and other employers to pay cyclists the Treasury’s approved and tax free rate of 20p per mile. To find out how much your local PCT and Authority pay click here
Bus Lane

Keep motorcycles away from cyclists

CTC is supporting London Cycling Campaign (LCC) who have written to the new London Mayor, Boris Johnson, urging him not to allow motorcycle access to bus lanes on main roads. CTC’s fear is that encouraging motorcycle use will add more noise, danger and pollution across the capital. This would be a double-whammy as it would become harder to attract people to take up cycling and would be particularly intimidating to novice cyclists. For more information on this issue read CTC's position on motorcycles and download a briefing. To sign LCC’s petition to Boris Johnson click here,

Another reason to get on your bike

We all know cycling is good for our health but new research from Sweden shows men who walked or cycled at least 30 minutes a day were 34 per cent less likely to die from cancer than men who exercised less or not at all. To find out more about the research click here.
Clive Andrews

If you go down to the Alice Holt woods today…

You won’t be in for much of a surprise if you watch this video of Clive Andrews, CTC Cycle Champions Officer at Alice Holt Forest. BMX

BMX World Champs

This weekend possibly the coolest cyclist in the UK is racing in China. Olympic hopeful Shanaze Reade will be competing in the BMX World Championships in Taiyuan. The 18 year old from Crewe currently has 4 world titles to her name and wants to make it five. To catch up on Shanaze’s progress check out the BMX World Champs website.

But is it art?

One man in Texas has turned his bicycle into a mobile art studio. To paint a picture all you have to do is go for a ride and hey presto a picture is painted. Yes, you guessed it: it is time for this week’s bizarre cycling video, but I ask you is it art as the paintings look pretty odd to me?
David Duffield

David Duffield Challenge 1st June
